Au cours de notre voyage vers les lieux présentés dans A Christmas Carol, nous verrons d’autres vues de Dickens. Explorons la région où Dicken travaillait comme commis subalterne. Depuis les mystérieux Inns of Court, il s’inspira de David Copperfield, de Great Expectations et de Martin Chuzzlewit.
Une taverne avec des caves datant du 13ème siècle. Ce pub était un repaire de Dickens et un lieu de rencontre pour le Hellfire Club. David Copperfield boit ici dans le roman du même nom. Allons-nous nous reposer près du feu et nous réchauffer avec du vin chaud?
Juste à côté de la Banque d'Angleterre, le Royal Exchange est l'endroit où le fantôme de Noël à venir emmène Scrooge voir ses collègues discuter de ses obsèques. Les marches de la Bourse sont le lieu traditionnel des annonces royales. Aujourd'hui, vous pouvez traverser la salle des marchés, mais les banquiers ont disparu depuis longtemps. Maintenant, les boutiques de créateurs et les bars à champagne attirent l'attention des visiteurs.
Sortons des sentiers battus et plongons dans le monde d'Ebeneezer Scrooge et 'A Christmas Carol' en visitant la Counting House de Scrooge, l'endroit où il a soupé le soir de Noël, et le coup de cœur de Charles Dickens, Chop House, George and Vulture. Si Dickens était avec nous lors de cette tournée, il pourrait se rendre au George and Vulture, trouver sa table préférée et même commander son repas préféré. Pas beaucoup a changé. Cette ancienne taverne atmosphérique était le lieu de réunion du Pickwick Club et est mentionnée plus de 20 fois dans les Pickwick Papers. Ces dernières années, ce beau marché a été utilisé dans les films Harry Potter. Mais Charles Dickens a utilisé cet endroit dans A Christmas Carol. C'est ici que Scrooge a envoyé le garçon chercher la plus grande dinde le matin de Noël lorsqu'il s'est réveillé en homme réformé.

What a delightful tour. Richard was an outstanding guide and shared a wealth of information about Dickens and his life in London. A Christmas Carol came to life as he wove the story together with actual London sites. Great tour especially at Christmas time. The tour time was a bit longer than noted only because Richard took the time to stop if people on the tour needed a quick break or wanted to stop for photos at one of the iconic phonebooths. And the old church/now turned into a coffee house was quite an interesting place for a quick break as well as Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Pub! Highly recommend this tour for a most interesting tour of old London.

Richard Chambers led our group on a fact-filled tour of the locales in the life of Charles Dickens, and their influence on his works. He let us in on the real-life people and places that shaped the locations and people in his stories with the skill of a true detective. If you want to know, you have to take the tour with him! Amazing tour and Richard was phenomenal in his storytelling. Taking the time to set the table and bring everything together was simply wonderful. He took us to different places that we would have never known or seen on our own. You don’t have to be a fan of Dickens to appreciate this tour. I am a fan, especially of A Christmas Carol. What even made it better was Richard talked about certain aspects of the story and showed how each place chosen for the tour was unique. It was almost like a treasure hunt! I’ve taken walking tours before, but this one was the best! Take the tour, learn about the history and culture behind the stories. SO MUCH FUN! Richard I do hope you will be on YouTube! Oh, one more thing…he showed a bonus site for the series Slow Horses! We love that show!
