Une fois arrivé à Berat, votre voyage commence au légendaire château de Berat, une forteresse qui remonte au IVe siècle avant J.-C. Perché sur une colline avec une vue imprenable sur toute la vallée, le château n'est pas seulement un monument — c'est l'une des rares forteresses encore habitées au monde. En explorant ses sentiers de pierre, vous découvrirez comment Berat a été envahie trois fois par les Ottomans, les Romains et les Bulgares, avant de devenir une puissante principauté sous la noble famille Muzaka au 14ème siècle. Votre promenade se poursuit jusqu'au musée d'iconographie d'Onufri, situé à l'intérieur de la cathédrale de l'Assomption de Sainte Marie, du XVIIIe siècle magnifiquement rénovée. Après le château, la visite vous mène au cœur de la ville — les quartiers traditionnels de Mangalem et Gorica. Reliés par l'élégant pont de Gorica sur la rivière Osum, ces quartiers sont célèbres pour leurs maisons ottomanes blanches, empilées parfaitement à flanc de colline, donnant à Berat son surnom : La Cité des Mille Fenêtres.

Départ pour Berat à 9h00 et vous serez transféré vers cette belle ville pendant environ 2,5 à 3 heures. C'est l'un des plus anciens et de la fierté de l'architecture albanaise. Les trois principaux quartiers de la vieille ville sont Mangalemi, Gorica et Kala où se trouve le château lui-même.

Berat Castle is one of the most important historical and cultural monuments in Albania. Built on a high hill, it offers a stunning view of the city and the Osumi River. The castle has a history that dates back to antiquity, but was strengthened and took its present form during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Inside it are old churches, characteristic houses and cobblestone alleys, which still preserve the spirit of past centuries. It is a living testament to Albanian history and heritage

We took a private one-day tour to Berat from Saranda with Mariglen. He was very punctual and we left promptly at 8am. Mariglen was thoughtful, kind and considerate. He looked after us all day and accommodated all our needs. The day was long but it really worth the trip as Berat is stunning, and it gives you a break from the crowds and heat of Saranda. The price included breakfast in the beautiful Tepelene and audioguides in the Iconography Museum in Berat. Really recomended tour agency and a great guide experience with Mariglen!

The main attraction of Berat, the castle is definitely worth the walk up for amazing views over the area. Make sure to walk around the perimeter so you can see all the viewpoints including the byzantine church.
