Description

The actual Scavi Tour of the Necropolis was unbelievable and amazing. The two parts ahead of that were a little confusing. First, the tour guide from Tour in Rome picks you up and hands you off to a worker and this worker brings you to the Scavi Office where you wait around 25 minutes for a Scavi tour guide to take you into the Necropolis. The Scavi guide, Patrick, was incredibly knowledgeable, passionate and clear. The site itself is incredible. It is only that the situation before the proper tour starts is a little confusing and unclear. I suppose this is because they are buying extremely difficult to obtain tickets on our behalf that the process is a bit convoluted and odd. It was not clearly explained and a bit confusing when it began. But, ultimately, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Probably the single best Rome guided tour that I have ever been on! Taras is a historian and an expert in his field and was able to explain the history in a manner that I was able to understand. I would definitely take this tour again the next time I am back in Rome.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed the Vatican Scavi: Underground St. Peter’s Tomb & Basilica VIP Tour. Taras is truly passionate about history, and he'll be thrilled to know that his knowledge and storytelling helped make the experience both engaging and easy to follow. Your kind words mean a lot to us, and we're especially honored that you consider this one of the best guided tours you've ever taken in Rome. We look forward to welcoming you back on another tour the next time you're in the Eternal City! Warm regards, Tour in the City Team
Unpleasant experience second time in 3 days with Viator. We are all shocked and disappointed because ToursByLocals was consistently positive and thorough tours. The humidity underground was intentional and unbearable. The tour guide was informative but took a long time. We were separately advised by two out of three of the guides on the tour that Saint Peter’s Basilica was closed and we couldn’t access that part of the tour. We left the square and walked about 7 minutes to get a large taxi, and other folks told us they just came from St. Peter’s Basilica!!! The inability to see The Blue Grotto 3 days before was bad enough. We never want to book with Viator.
This comment is honestly quite unreal and confusing. First of all, humidity inside the Necropolis, located about 20 meters underground, is completely normal, especially considering that it is an archaeological site. Regarding St. Peter’s Basilica, it was not “closed”: you exited directly into the Basilica. What was not included was a guided tour of the Basilica itself. As for the Blue Grotto in Capri, we honestly do not see how that has anything to do with us or this Vatican Scavi tour. Overall, this review mixes unrelated topics and presents very confusing information.
The necropolis excavation tour was a small group and we had fabulous guides. For the excavation portion we had an archaeology tour guide and Sabrina was so enthusiastic about the Vatican and the basilica our tour was very detailed. Our group would never have slowed down to observe all the monuments and paintings. Sabrina made it all come to life!
Thank you for your wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed both the Vatican Necropolis and St. Peter’s Basilica tour. The Scavi excavation is truly a unique experience, and we're delighted that our archaeology guide helped bring the fascinating history of the site to life. A special thank you for your kind words about Sabrina. Her passion for the Vatican, its history, art, and symbolism is contagious, and she loves helping guests discover details that are often overlooked. We're so pleased that her enthusiasm and expertise made the Basilica come alive for you and allowed you to appreciate its monuments, masterpieces, and hidden stories in a deeper way. Thank you for choosing Tour In the City. We hope to welcome you back to Rome for another memorable experience soon! Warm regards, The Tour In the City Team
Exceptional experience! Go deeper than the catacombs into roman mausoleums and see St Peters tomb. Uneven ground with stairs and occasional low ceilings. We enjoyed our own walk around St Peters Basilica following, with amazing climb up to the view from the dome.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed this unique experience beneath St. Peter’s Basilica. Exploring the ancient Roman mausoleums and reaching the area traditionally recognized as St. Peter’s tomb is truly a remarkable journey through history. We're also glad you took the opportunity to continue exploring the Basilica on your own and enjoyed the climb to the top of the dome—one of the most breathtaking views in Rome! Thank you for choosing Tour In the City and for sharing your experience. We hope to welcome you back for another unforgettable adventure in the future. Warm regards, The Tour In the City Team
Tour guide was so knowledgeable, everything about the tour was great. We were able to check off many items on our bucket list on this tour. Have already recommended the tour to others.

Your recommendation means a lot to us, and we sincerely appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. The tour company gave a great overview of the history of St Peter’s Basilica and the archeological levels underneath it. We were then turned over to a Vatican employee who escorted us into Vatican City behind the square to the Scavi entrance. Next, a Vatican employee tour guide took us into Scavi/Necropolis for the in depth tour. We selected and paid for this tour 2 months in advance because the Scavi was on our must see list. Tickets at approximately 22 Euros from the Vatican are very difficult to get and the Vatican did not accept or decline our reservation request submitted both one and two months in advance until the day before the date we requested. Paying the extra money to the tour company was worth it.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience! We are delighted to hear that the Vatican Scavi was one of the highlights of your trip and that our team helped make this special visit possible. As you mentioned, access to the Scavi and St. Peter's Tomb is extremely limited, and obtaining reservations directly through the Vatican can be challenging, with requests often remaining pending until the last moment. For this reason, many guests choose to rely on our service for the peace of mind that comes with having everything arranged in advance. We are pleased that you appreciated the historical introduction provided by our guide, as well as the seamless coordination with the Vatican staff and official Scavi guides who conducted the underground visit. Thank you for recognizing the value of the service and organization involved in securing this unique experience. We are honored to have helped you visit one of the most fascinating and exclusive sites within Vatican City. Kind regards, The Team
The scavi tour was not great, could not hear the lady giving tour. The Basilica tour lady was excellent very knowledgeable bubbly and could hear her great
Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear the Scavi portion of the tour did not fully meet your expectations due to the audio difficulties. At the same time, we’re very happy to know you enjoyed the Basilica tour and appreciated your guide’s knowledge and energy. Your comments are very important to us and will help us improve the experience for future guests. We hope to welcome you again on another tour in Rome and the Vatican!
Our guide for the Necropolis was very knowledgeable and was happy to answer any questions we had. Our guide for the Basillica was also very knowledgeable and very enthusiastic about everything she was sharing. We enjoyed both tours thoroughly thanks to our guides.
Thank you for your wonderful review! We're delighted to hear that you found the experience informative, educational, and enjoyable. It’s great to know that both of your guides made the tours engaging and were able to share their knowledge with enthusiasm. The Vatican Scavi and Basilica are truly special places, and we’re so pleased you had such a memorable visit. We hope to welcome you again soon!
You are unable to take pictures and the air quality can be musty and humid. The time in the chapel was very memorable for me. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable for the scavi and St. Peter’s Church tour
Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate your comments and are glad to hear that you found the time in the chapel memorable and that our guides were knowledgeable during both the Scavi and St. Peter’s Basilica tour. Regarding your observations, we would like to clarify that the restrictions on photography and the environmental conditions (such as humidity and air quality) are inherent to the Scavi area itself and are strictly regulated by the Vatican, not by tour operators. These measures are in place to preserve this highly sensitive and sacred archaeological site. We are pleased that, despite these limitations, you were able to enjoy such a meaningful and enriching experience.
