Bad communications and misleading advertisement.

The pickup experience was terrible. Sent a query the night before to confirm exact pickup time from hotel with no response. Then rang up in the morning a few hours before tour starts and was finally informed to be 1:20pm. We were all ready before then and waited and waited until the time has passed by and I had to ring up again to see what was happening. I was then told the driver will arrive by 1:50pm. 1:50pm came and went and I had to keep sending messages and made unsuccessful phone calls. At 2:23pm, I told the lady that the tour is now delayed by so much, it was probably not much of a point to go anymore. She kept insisting the driver was on his way. Well, he did arrive at 2:35pm and there were 3 more pickups after us before we headed down to Bongawan. That was nearly 3pm by then and we were geographically still about 5mins walk from our hotel. Once everyone was on board, the guide then apologised for the delay, saying that the driver had a puncture and was delayed in having to change the tyre. That would have been a horrendously long time to change the tyre (maybe it was all 4 tyres!!) and besides that not once were we informed about the reason for the delay except "the driver is on the way and we're expediting". The expected tour start was 1pm and this was now 2hrs later. We can only assume that the daytime activities had to be shortened with less time on the boat and possibly checking out the same short stretch of the river a few times instead of a longer stretch, interspersed with dinner and time on the beach. The mirror image of the boat in the advertisement for this tour is a complete furphy. We didn't see anything like that and the guide didn't even seem to know about that image when I showed it to him. At dinner, it was most unhygienic and a concern to see cats allowed to jump onto tables and eating the scraps off the table. It was a real turn-off.

Essential activities when you come to Kota Kinabalu

Because the experience of seeing a monkey is not I wonder if I have some luck. Watching fireflies was very fantastic. It's hard to see these days, so it was good. I was alone, but I enjoyed it. I'm glad I came. If you come to Kota Kinabalu, I think you should definitely join the tour. I felt like I couldn't do it on my own.

Malaysian Jungle Cruise +++

Such a fun time! Our guide, Kel, was so nice and very informative. Our tour included hotel pick up and drop off, a snack upon arrival, a boat ride to see monkeys and more, an authentic Malaysian buffet dinner, a trip to the beach for sky mirror pics and a beautiful sunset and ended with fireflies. Our group was able to see two kinds of monkeys as well as crocodiles and monitor lizards - we felt soooo lucky. Plus, the firefly experience felt very special. (I was a little freaked out by the fireflies, but also in awe of them.) - This was a very fun outing. Do bring bug spray/mosquito repellent and consider wearing long pants and long sleeve tops.

Highly recommended but be minded on a few tips

Kelvin and Ogni were great guides! They did their best to make our vacation a great experience. The firefly tour was great - that was a once in a lifetime experience. Just a few tips to fully enjoy the tour; Bring your own water bottle; there is only a few opportunities to have water during the 8-9 hrs of tour. It is a must to bring your own water bottle. Bring cash; snack is very light and the dinner is early at 4:30pm, and you cant eat anything until you’re back at hotel at like 9:30pm. My husband and I were starving. Bring cash so that you can buy some snacks and drinks at the beach. Plan well for the toilet; the ride to the venue is long (1.5hrs) and so is the boat ride. Use toilet whenever you have a chance. Overall a great experience!!

Hard to review as did not experience most of it

Weather is always a risk in Borneo. Unfortunately we had to sit and wait for the rain to lessen, then went for a short boat ride but did not see any monkeys. Then we were just told to sit and wait and see if the weather would clear to be able to try to finish the monkey tour or do the next 2 activities. After a few hours we all asked to just be taken home. The weather is out of their control, but it would be good to have some back up activities to do instead, since this is presumably a regular occurrence. I know others were trying to at least get some of their money back, and to be honest it would seem fair as they did not need to pay for the photographers, the drivers were able to finish early etc.
