You can see many orangutans but on pictures only

I went there with a friend of mine. To be brutally honest, it has been one of the most disappointing experiences we have ever lived as travellers. Getting to Semenggoh wildlife centre was pointless and a real waste of time. When we arrived at the entrance we were clearly told we wouldn't have seen any orangutan. They also pointed out they hadn't been seen for nearly two months. After hearing that, we didn't know what to do...whether to pay the ticket and enter or go back to Kuching. Since the price ticket was cheap, we decided to give it a try. From the entrance to the feeding platform, it takes around 15 minutes on foot. Along the way we could see on both sides of the street many orangutans. Yup...many orangutans...but only on big pictures. Once we arrived at the feeding platform we met other tourists. We talked with a ranger. He confirmed what we were told at the entrance...there was no chance for us to see orangutans. It made it clear orangutans can find all the food they need in the jungle. Why should they show up on the feeding platform? Just to please visitors? No way! To cut it short, after waiting for more than one hour, we had no choice but to go back and leave the park. In my humble opinion, the park should be kept closed. It should be open only if there is a concrete chance to admire orangutans in their natural habitat. I hope this review can help other tripadvisor members to be aware of the risks of going there.

Good Day We at Magunatip Holidays has stop taking guest to Semenggoh Orangutan Center since the beginning of March. I am not certain how was this review directed to us. Please rest assure we have advise guest about the NO sightings of Orangutans for the past months. This is mainly due to wild forest fruits season. The objective of this sanctuary is clearly defined when the Orangutans can fend for them selves. I would still apologies for your bad tour experience although you were not advise of the situation. I would like to take this opportunity to say a BIG Thank you for visiting Semenggoh Reserve. It is tourist like your good self that has made this Rehabilitation a success.

Not recommended!

Unfortunately not recommended. The monkeys are only fed when they are also nearby. This means that during the fruit season, animals are hardly ever sighted. By the time we got there, we haven't been there for over 50 days. Otherwise there is nothing to do! All hiking trails / nature trails have been closed for several years. So you just walk along the road to the feeding grounds - nothing else. If there are no monkeys around, no food is laid out. So the chance of seeing orangutans savaged there is very small!

Magunatip holidays take money keep away from booking with this company

The tour operator edwin from magunatip holidays turned up at the allotted time and decided to cancel the trip at the last moment due to no sightings of orangutans within the last 53 days He was not helpful and suggested a alternative excursion that was not of value of what I had already paid Due to not been given 24hrs notice of this cancellation on their behalf I am unable to receive a refund Stay away from this company and only book from where you are staying as they obviously must do this often

Good Day The Tour Guide Mr Jamaldi meet you on tour date to explained briefly on the itinerary taking place before proceeding together to Semenggoh, which you have chosen not to participate. The wildlife at Semenggoh are free to roam at the Protected Forest Reserve. As Wildlife Rangers has rehabilitate, trained and release them back to the wild. The semi-wild Orangutans Rehabilitation Program is a success because of tourist adoptions program , tourist constant visitation. This has greatly help to maintain the Semenggoh Center for the past 51 years. They are ophaned , injured , rescued from poacher for illegal pet trading. the success of the Rehabilitation Program since 1975 has bared fruit. The Orangutans Roam freely and sometimes don't come back for regular fruit buffet meal times. When they do return for a meal , Ranjers observe for any injuries , pregnancies , infants health etc... I am truly sorry you had a bad experience.

No orangutans now

No orangutans to see now since trees are fruiting (though it is not fruiting season). They don’t need to vine to the platforms to be fed. At entrance they told us don’t bother getting a ticket. Wish they put this info on the website.

Dear Ms Marie Anne We are truly sorry you did not experience to see any Orangutans. At feeding time they never failed to appear at the call of the Ranger. Wild fruit trees in the forest must be the reason. We take this opportunity to thank you for your patience and time taken to visit the semi wild Orangutans. It is due to tourist contribution that the Orangutan Center has manage rehabilitate and release them to the forest reserves.

Get a grab there yourself, the tour guide was useless waste of money and rude. Orangutans however amazing!

17/5/25 - The overall trip was an amazing experience and we were very lucky to see one large male orangutan in a natural environment. Please note however that you are not advised before hand (or less than 24 hrs before - so you can not cancel) that at the moment it is VERY rare to see them as the fruits are abundant (so no need for them to visit for food) and construction at the site is keeping the apes away. We learnt that there was no sightings for 2 weeks prior! So our expectation was low. So-again we were VERY fortunate that we saw one Orangutan. What stopped this being 5 stars was the tour guide. The poor condition of the car - old damaged pieces missing - the incredibly rude driver Julian. Julian insulted me upon pick up, he made derogatory comments about my weight and ability for the car to “move”. I realise as experienced travellers in SEAsia being 6 foot and of Anglo heritage we are typically larger than most Asian heritage peoples however his comments on my weight was deeply hurtful and ruined the experience. He should not be working as a guide for international travellers.

Hi Sir / Madam , I have checked all Semenggoh Bookings for the Month of May , there were no Semenggoh Tours on the 17 May. Furthermore we don't have a Guide by the name of Julian. I am surprise the guide mention above spoke so rudely , no guides especially from Borneo would ever comments about their own guest. Please write to Viator personally , i am sure with your tour voucher , Viator will inform the Tour Operator to explain further due to clients unsatisfactory tour experience. My apologies for your bad tour experience , hopefully you get the explanation you paid for. Thank you, Edwin

Must-visit For Nature Lovers

An unforgettable experience! The reserve is home to semi-wild orangutans, and seeing them in their natural habitat was truly incredible. I was lucky to witness a few orangutans swinging through the trees and coming down for feeding—such a rare and special sight! The environment is well-preserved, with lush greenery and a peaceful atmosphere. (P.S. Do note that sightings are not guaranteed, as the orangutans roam freely, but that’s part of what makes the experience so authentic. Arriving early during feeding times increases your chances.) Overall, a and anyone looking to see these amazing creatures up close while supporting conservation efforts!

It was my lucky day during fruiting season.

I had paid for a driver to take me to the Fairy caves and Wind Caves (highly recommend) I asked him if it was worth me coming here due to it being fruiting season and he said sure let's try. Turned up for the afternoon feeding time, in torrential rain, and was blessed with the appearance of 4 orangutans! All the staff are really friendly, it was a great experience!

Came to Kuching expressly for this experience !

I came to Kuching expressly to see this Orangutan Centre and was not disappointed. I booked through "Ooo Haa Adventure Tours" and the cost was 125RM. Collected from Ranee Hotel (this was close to where I was actually staying) in a minivan with 6 other travelers. Takes minimum of about 45 minutes to get there and the guide arranges your entry ticket and a ride on a motor train to get to the feeding site. After a brief introductory talk by a ranger the food is laid out on a feeding platform, and you wait in anticipation. We saw 5 orangutans (very large male, a smaller male, a juvenile male and a mother and baby - OMG - so excited and privileged. Apparently, it is sometimes very "hit and mis" as to whether the animals indulge us with their presence and the people who came for the morning feeding session only saw 2 orangutans (but two is infinitely preferable to none). No complaints about anything - I loved the experience and was thankful to/for the Ooo Haa Adventure Tour.
