Une visite de la basilique de San Clemente du XIIe siècle révèle un splendide mosaïque doré au-dessus de l'apse centrale. La basilique de San Clemente s'est transformée au fil des siècles, passant d'une maison privée, qui fut le lieu d'un culte chrétien secret au premier siècle, à une imposante basilique. Ce qui se trouvait sous la basilique était inconnu jusqu'en 1860, lorsque des inondations ont conduit un prêtre dominicain irlandais et archéologue à explorer les niveaux sous le sol de la basilique. Les fouilles sont toujours en cours. Aujourd'hui, vous pouvez descendre jusqu'à 30 mètres sous terre sur trois niveaux. Au premier niveau, nous trouvons une basilique du IVe siècle, longtemps oubliée après la construction de la basilique du XIIe siècle au-dessus. En dessous, les vestiges d'un ancien temple païen mithraïque. Plus bas encore, des ruines de maisons romaines antiques.

This was spectacular. Our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and genuinely cared about the material. He was patient with question and his enthusiasm made this a very much enjoyable experience. He even helped us get a taxi in the end and waited for the taxi to arrive.

We had an amazing underground tour of the Basilica of San Clemente with Eddy! He was incredibly energetic, engaging, and knowledgeable throughout the entire experience. His enthusiasm for the history and archaeology of the site made the tour both educational and fun. He brought the layers of Roman history to life and did a great job explaining the significance of what we were seeing underground. We found the tour a little long many stairs but we're able to relax in the gardens which we did after before heading back to our hotel thankyou for the experience worth the trip

This is a wonderful little known gem in Rome. A way to literally walk down through history. What an unexpected experience. Our guide was knowledgeable and gave great insight into the history of the church. So glad we booked this tour
