Avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il n'y avait pas de gare centrale, mais il y avait quatre gares autour du centre. En 1957, la gare centrale a été ouverte à son emplacement actuel. En 2004, une rénovation totale de la gare centrale a été lancée, en 2014, le résultat final actuel a été livré. L'ancienne gare ne pouvait plus faire face à l'afflux de voyageurs.
En 2011, la municipalité de Rotterdam a organisé la première initiative de la ville, un instrument administratif pour stimuler l'innovation administrative et la participation citoyenne. Les habitants de Rotterdam ont été appelés à soumettre des projets susceptibles d'animer la ville et d'améliorer la qualité de vie dans la ville. Un montant de 4 millions a été mis de côté à l'initiative de la ville pour mettre en œuvre le projet.
Au Moyen Âge, l'une des 10 portes de la ville que Rotterdam possédait ici. Dans les années 30, la ville de Rotterdam s'est développée rapidement et la porte a fait obstacle, car ils voulaient un meilleur flux pour le trafic croissant. Il a été décidé de déplacer la porte d'environ 100 mètres (une démolition de la porte a rencontré beaucoup de résistance). Lors du bombardement de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la porte a été gravement endommagée, un an après le bombardement, la porte a été démolie, car elle ne pouvait plus être terminée. Quelques ouvrages ornementaux de l'ancienne porte ont été conservés et intégrés aux murs des bâtiments d'angle avec la place de la mairie.
L'hôtel de ville a été construit entre 1914 et 1920 (par Henri Evers) et est l'un des rares bâtiments du centre de Rotterdam à avoir survécu au bombardement du 14 mai 1940.
Actuellement, le meent est l'un des points chauds de Rotterdam. Il y a de nombreux cafés, restaurants et boutiques de vêtements. Dans les années 90, le meent était une rue où se trouvaient principalement des agences de travail temporaire et de voyages, le meent était une rue sans atmosphère avec beaucoup de vacance. Robin von Weiler n'est pas étranger à Rotterdam. Il doit son surnom de M. Meent à tout ce qu'il a fait et fait encore pour cette rue.
La laurenskerk est le seul vestige du centre médiéval de Rotterdam. La laurenskerk est un croisement entre une église-halle (tous les bâtiments ont la même hauteur) et une basilique cruciforme (ici les tours latérales sont plus basses que la tour principale). L'église a été construite entre 1449 et 1525.

Dans les années 70 du XXe siècle, les architectes ont voulu créer des zones résidentielles hospitalières avec la participation des habitants et des autres usagers en réponse au modernisme à grande échelle et gris de l'architecture de la reconstruction après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Piet Blom, structuraliste et adepte d'Aldo van Eyck, supposait que les bâtiments à grande échelle devaient être construits à la taille des gens en les construisant à partir d'éléments reconnaissables à petite échelle. L'idée de base, que le bâtiment soit construit sur des colonnes, afin que l'espace sous les bâtiments puisse rester public, est inspirée de Le Corbusier

We had to cancel at the very last minute...we had double booked ourselves. The operator was very kind and offered a ride next time we're in town We didnt request a refund of course.

This was a wonderful tour. As we had already visited Rotterdam on another vacation, we wanted to see and hear about some different and unusual sights. Our guide surely made that happen. He told us many interesting stories and we were very pleased with this tour! P.S. He did take a picture of us and promised to text it to us but I have not received it yet. We were supposed to take this tour (and had paid), but 15 minutes before the tour, they called and wanted to delay it by 30 minutes due to a summer festival (we booked this months ago and the summer festival was something planned for months that they knew was occurring). Since it was afternoon, we could not delay, as we were on a cruise ship. We were willing to go late, but they said they could not guarantee we would be back by the time we needed to return to the ship. I asked if they could refund the money; they stated that we would have to check with customer service. They asked what we wanted to do; we said we would have to cancel if they could not guarantee we would be back on time. Now, they are saying we lied, that they did offer the original time (they did not - my husband heard the conversation), and the person I was talking with refuses to refund our money (over $150 - there was no other "customer service" person). I would not trust booking with them again, which is too bad since we will be back again in a few months.

However, we do need to correct several statements in your review which are not true.. The proposed 2:30 PM start was presented as an option, not as the only available pickup time. Once you explained that you needed to return to your cruise ship by approximately 3:00–3:15 PM, we immediately offered to keep the original 2:00 PM meeting time and shorten the tour so you could return within your preferred timeframe. We also explained that, as a responsible operator, we could never guarantee an exact return time due to circumstances outside anyone's control, such as traffic or unexpected congestion. After discussing the option together, you decided to cancel the tour. At no point did we refuse to operate it. Regarding the festival, this was precisely why we contacted you before the tour; to communicate the situation and work with you on the best solution. Our goal was to make the tour possible despite the circumstances. We're disappointed that our recollection of the conversation differs so significantly, but we stand by the facts and the efforts we made to accommodate your schedule. Very relaxed, fun & interesting covering a relatively small area of central Rotterdam. Someone younger than I am might have enjoyed doing it as a walking tour. Guide Izzy was fun and informative.
