Le fort de Jaisalmer est le deuxième plus ancien fort du Rajasthan. Il a été construit en 1156 par le Rajput Rawal Jaisal (souverain), duquel il tire son nom. Nathmal ki Haveli, Jaisalmer est une architecture de la fin du 19ème siècle qui était autrefois la maison du Premier ministre. Il est célèbre pour son architecture extraordinaire et est considéré comme le meilleur de Jaisalmer. Apparemment, il y a une histoire intéressante derrière cela. La structure de grandeur est un travail difficile de deux frères, Hathi et Lullu, bijoutiers et non architectes. Ils ont tous deux commencé avec différentes facettes du bâtiment simultanément. En conséquence, les ailes gauche et droite du bâtiment sont identiques mais non identiques. Les Écritures rédigées sur le Haveli n’ont jamais été vues par les frères architectes dans la vie réelle et ont été gravées selon les descriptions des personnes qui les ont vues.
Les marchands de Jaisalmer ont construit certaines des résidences les plus ornées de tous les temps. Patwon Ki Haveli est en grès de Jaisalmer, orné de jaalis et de façades élaborées. Les pierres les plus habiles sont réalisées à l'extérieur, car elles représentaient plus que toute autre une richesse. La plus grande et la plus ornée des havelis est la Patwon-ki-Haveli, un ensemble de cinq maisons adjacentes, construites par cinq frères jaïns dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle. C'étaient les cinq fils de Guman Chand, un commerçant de textiles et de métaux précieux.

Harish is a very knowledgeable about Jaisalmer having been born and raised in Jaisalmer. He took us to all the city highlights and bazaars. Harishji took us along for a 5 hour tour of the Jaisalmer Fort & surrounding attractions such as Nathmal & Patwon ki Haveli. With his amazing story telling ability & sense of humour, we had an enriching download of Jaisalmer’s history, got an amazing tour of the fort including a panaromic view from a cafe, details of the beautiful jain temple in fort premises, a taste of the famed Kachori & Ghotwa and also the story of Satyajit Ray shooting his famous “Sonar Kella” ! Harish is a fantastic guide. He took us through an excellent walk inside the Jaisalmer Fort pointing out noteworthy sites and providing the right amount of information to make the walk interesting. Harish also knows the best places inside the fort where you can take a short break, use a restroom or sip on a drink while you refresh yourself. He took us to the intricately carved Jain temples, the wonderful havelis as well as Bada Bagh to see the cenotaphs amazingly lit up in the rays of the setting sun. Harish is fluent in English, articulate and knowledgeable and we had a wonderful day exploring Jaisalmer with him. An added benefit with Harish, is that he is an excellent photographer and he took some great snaps capturing the memories from this trip which we would always cherish.
