Peñas Blancas River : Wildlife Safari Experience by Kayak

Fantastic time kayaking down the river. All thanks to our guide, Samuel, who was simply amazing at spotting numerous animals and birds along the way. He was very well informed and provided us with detailed information on everything saw which included a crocodile, a couple of troops of howler monkeys,miguanas, a porcupine, quite a few tiny bats, kingfisher, blue heron, swallows and vultures. Safari tour could not be more apt. A highlight was Samuel mimicking the calls of the howler monkey. The alpha monkey in the troop was really getting involved in answering him back. It was incredible. This tour is exactly why we came to Costa Rica.

Great experience w/ Bathshiva on the river! Shes so smart, insightful, knowledgeable and a joy to hang out with! We want to go again! We saw howler monkeys, iguanas, a croc, all kinds of beautiful birds and foliage and trees! We learned all about the animals, the river and the area! Fresh fruit and beverages at the end was a very nice touch! Also the pix our guide took for us! So great fr beginning to end!

We had a great time on the river with Calypso. They picked us up at our resort and drove us to the river. Washrooms were available at the launch site. Kayaks were in very good condition. We paddled down river as the guide pointed out birds and iguanas etc. Then came the highlight. A troop of howler monkeys was moving from tree to tree along the river. We pulled over to watch. They then decided to cross the river. We watched from our kayaks as the group leapt one by one across the river right in front of us. We ended the trip with fresh fruit and beverages.

Guides experienced. Saw wild sloth, several monkeys! Barely missed seeing crocodile. Delicious snack at the end. Shallow water.

Calypso kayak tour was simply excellent. Perfect organization of tour with perfect and funny guides Bethshiva, Warner & Rodolfo! Due to not very good weather they were very flexible to manage our trip and do it later, many thx! We enjoyed this fun trip so we recommend it to everybody who wants to spend excelent day on Penas Blancas river watching animals and have a fun!

The perfect experience to enjoy nature. Arriving at Fortune I was looking for a quiet and exciting experience, it was certainly my best option. I was encouraged to do the tour alone and Bethshiva made me feel very safe, she is a very professional guide and we saw many animals. Super recommended.

On this tour we spent the most beautiful hours of the last days so far. On a distance of about 10km we paddled/drifted downstream in a very relaxed way with our kayak guide “Jo” and were able to enjoy an abundance of flora and fauna. Depending on the dry/rainy season, the current is slower/faster, but the time on the river itself is a great 2h. Seeing animals is always a bit of a matter of luck, but with us everything was there: Owls, kingfishers, blue herons, howler monkeys, turtles, bats...and crocodiles! The largest was about 2m long, so better not fall out of the boat/kayak. The guide's explanations were super informative and insightful. At the end there was a small snack and a short but equally interesting introduction to cocoa/chocolate making including tasting. If you’re in La Fortuna, don’t miss this tour, because here you can feel and live “Pura Vida”!

Very friendly and knowledgable crew. We saw some cool animals, learned a lot about native flora and fauna, and overall had a great time on the river with Andres!

We LOVED this trip. Such a wonderful experience. Gentle river trip. We saw lots of wildlife and birds including Howler monkeys and a sloth moving (! Yes!) in a tree!! Our guide was fantastic. A real passion for wildlife and conversation in Cost Rica. We learned so much. Great customer service and chat but still gave us our family space. Thank you to the team for a memorable experience that will last long after our holiday!
