En 1661, Bombay était un ensemble d'îles marécageuses données aux Britanniques dans le cadre d'une dot royale, louée à la Compagnie des Indes orientales pour dix livres par an. Ce qui suivit pendant deux siècles fut l'une des transformations urbaines les plus extraordinaires de l'histoire. Les bâtiments de style gothique et Art déco du sud de Bombay sont aujourd'hui classés au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO — reconnus comme la plus belle concentration d'architecture Art déco en dehors de Miami. Cette visite à pied de trois heures à Bombay couvre le plus grand d'entre eux : CST, l'un des plus beaux édifices gothiques victoriens d'Asie. Cinéma Eros et Regal, chefs-d'œuvre Art déco des années 1930. Rajabai Tower, le Big Ben de Mumbai. Et la Porte de l'Inde, par l'arche de laquelle les dernières troupes britanniques ont défilé le 28 février 1948. Bâtiment classé au patrimoine de l'UNESCO, le CST est sans doute le meilleur exemple d'architecture néo-gothique victorienne en Inde. Ce qui est remarquable, c'est que les éléments gothiques se mêlent à des thèmes issus de l'architecture traditionnelle indienne. Avec plus de 6 millions de navetteurs quotidiens, CST est l'une des gares les plus fréquentées au monde.
Nous visitons le cinéma Eros et le voyons de l'extérieur. C'est une belle salle de cinéma construite dans le style Art déco. On remarquera que le bâtiment ressemble à un gâteau de mariage puisqu'il s'élève en gradins surmontés d'une tour semi-circulaire !
Nous marchons ensuite vers un impressionnant bâtiment résidentiel Art Déco appelé Empress Court. Nous le verrons de l'extérieur. Nous discuterons de la façon dont vivre dans ces bâtiments Art déco était autrefois un symbole de statut et de richesse !
Ensuite, nous visiterons le bâtiment de la Haute Cour de Mumbai de l'extérieur. C'est un magnifique exemple d'architecture gothique. Nous chercherons les statues de la justice et de la miséricorde au sommet du bâtiment qui inspirent les citoyens respectueux des lois !
Il est temps de visiter le Big Ben de Mumbai. Écoutez l'histoire de la façon dont il a été financé pour aider la mère malvoyante du patron à écouter les carillons et à garder son jeûne ponctuellement ! Ce bâtiment sera vu de l'extérieur.
Nous ferons la connaissance d'un banquier juif nommé David Sassoon qui a construit une magnifique structure gothique comme salle de lecture et bibliothèque. Seuls les membres sont autorisés à l'intérieur et nous le verrons donc depuis le hall.
Nous apprécierons l'architecture d'Elphinston College, une structure gothique remarquable. L'institution compte d'illustres anciens élèves, dont Bal Gangadhar Tilak, le Dr BR Ambedkar et Jamshedji Tata. Ce bâtiment sera vu de l'extérieur.
Le Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya ou le musée du Prince de Galles est installé dans un magnifique bâtiment patrimonial qui était auparavant utilisé comme hôpital militaire pour les expositions sur le bien-être des enfants pendant la première guerre mondiale. Le musée a été construit afin de commémorer la visite du roi George V à Mumbai. Ce bâtiment sera vu de l'extérieur.

The tour of Mumbai was very fun and informative. The guide was very helpful and provided an excellent tour of the city. Would recommend the tour to any visitors to Mumbai.
Our experience with Pankaj was just amazing. He was truly the best tour guide we have ever had on any tour in any city we’ve ever been to. He went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and well taken care of. He was very patient in the morning when we arrived late. Even when we had a small problem with one of the trains we took, he went out of his way to make sure it all got ironed out smoothly. And there were no more issues. We can’t say enough good things about him. We would highly highly highly recommend him to anyone.
An excellent tour and in depth commentary 👌 on British colonial and the East India Company and cultures that formed Mumbai. The tour was flexible with neat added aspects - rail trip and Crawford market , Leopold Cafe and Taj Hotel 2008 massacre event- all quite special . Pankaj also deftly modified the walking content with taxi segments in very hot weather. Thoroughly recommend 5 Senses and their guide Pankaj Kevin and Jenny C
5/5 Stars - Excellent Tour Guide and Route
We enjoyed a wonderful walking tour with our guide Pankaj. He provided a great history of the area and was open to answer questions about sites and culture. Beginning with a tour of Victoria station and a short train ride (out and back) we went on to explore several sites over about a 4 mile walk. Pankaj made sure we were hydrated and ready to keep going (it was of course scorching hot). At the end of the tour he even walked us over to a place he recommended for lunch. Truly wonderful. We plan to return to Mumbai in March 2027 with a group of students from the US and will use this tour again for them.
Our walking tour with Pankaj was delightful. We had no idea of the beautiful architecture and gardens in Mumbai, and Pankaj was so knowledgeable about everything. We ate a delicious, typical lunch and even had a train ride. All in all, a thorough and enjoyable tour.
When Pankaj asked me about my interests, he tailored my walking tour to capture the many architectural marvels the city of Mumbai had to offer; from the now gentrified tenements of the former labourers who toiled in the sun, to the gothic styled educational institutions, Victorian-era railway stations & colonial buildings, to what must be the largest collection of Art Deco buildings I've ever seen, & the blending of northern & southern Indian styles in temples. My guide was not only knowledgeable & passionate about this city he loves so much, he was able to make it come alive for me. I would highly recommend him.
