A fun experience! It was worth the half day to learn about the traditions and history of Borneo's indigenous cultures. After checking in, we were guided around the different structures replicated after each tribe's traditions. Our guide, Eddie, made the experience very enjoyable. He was very friendly, managed the group well, and knowledgeable about the different tribes. At each stop he took time to explain how things are made and done, and made it comfortable for everyone to have a chance to try all of the activities and get pictures. At the end of the tour there is a music and dance performance, and a buffet lunch. As a solo traveler if you want to partake in the lunch, this is the tour to go with, and the group size was small, ours only had 5.
The cultural village was a fantastic experience, I highly recommend it to anyone that is visiting Sabah! The drop off and pick up was smooth and hassle-free, which is the main perk of this package. You could get the same amazing experience for half the price by booking directly on the Mari Mari Cultural Visit website, you'd just have to sort out your own transport.
Fascinating morning exploring the different tribes. My kids are 9 and 12 and were engaged by the variety of activities in each long house. Our guide was knowledgable and well organised. Definitely recommend.
We had John as the guide for the day. It was an enjoyable ride to the cultural village, he shared a lot of interesting facts making it exciting. The village tour in itself was a lovely experience, we got to see how the indigenous people lived and their habitat. They involved us in trying things. The food was delicious. Overall an eventful day and I would certainly recommend it.
Thank you very much to John for this fascinating tour of the Mari-Mari village. Everything went stress-free with many clear and interesting explanations throughout the route. He knew how to create a very pleasant and friendly atmosphere, making the discovery even more enriching. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wishes to explore the Mari-Mari village in the company of a very attentive and passionate guide.
smooth experience, enjoyable and educational
I really enjoyed the morning at Mari Mari, and am grateful for a wonderful company who lets you book this experience as a solo traveler (many only let you book 2+). I had an exceptional guide in John, who was kind, engaging, and made sure that everyone enjoyed a great experience. As well as learning more about indigenous cultures, you’re able to try lots of local yummy snacks and drinks along the way. The staff who work here are lovely and very happy for you to take photos of them demonstrating and performing. The buffet at the end was terrific too with lots of variety and good drinks. I’d highly recommend this tour and company.
Incredible experience with a knowledgeable guide. I was a little worried that the experience might be cheesy or inauthentic, but that was NOT the case at all. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was very pleased with the value. Eddie is an engaging guide who immerses you in the distant and immediate history of Malaysia. He took great care of our group, making sure that everyone was comfortable and enjoying themselves. He even made sure to explain all of the dishes at lunch (which was fabulous!) 10/10 would recommend.
I enjoyed my trip. I am happy for the fact that I got to experience this amazing trip as a solo traveller. Thank you to trip advisor for allowing solo travellers the ability to book this trip. Other websites and vendors don’t want to book solo travellers because they might loose money if the venue isn’t filled. I tried booking a trip to the Mari Mari village on my last visit to Kota Kinabalu and unfortunately wasn’t able to. But it was worth the visit. I when on this trip to learn about the history of the people and culture before the colonization of the country. Our tour guide was amazing and knowledgeable. He was very passionate about his job and his country. He made sure that we enjoyed our trip. If I go back to KK again I would do this tour with this vendor.
This cultural village is bustling with visitors. We visited the houses of 5 different tribes. Eddie, our guide cum driver, is enthusiastic in sharing with us the various tribes' way of life. On our way to the village, he also gave a good commentary on the history of Sabah. I would recommend him as a competent guide. (It will be good if he can contact us earlier to confirm on the pickup, we were initially worried if the trip is confirmed)
