Au Haut-Belvédère, nous commençons par le panorama le plus généreux de Vienne. Construit par le prince Eugène, un génie militaire qui n’a jamais régné, le palais est devenu le berceau symbolique de la Deuxième République autrichienne en 1955. De l’ambition impériale à la neutralité d’après-guerre, le changement est visible depuis la terrasse.
Belvedere Gardens & Lower Belvedere - en descendant l'axe baroque des jardins, nous lisons le paysage comme une déclaration politique : l'ordre, la hiérarchie et l'esthétique du pouvoir.
Mémorial de la guerre soviétique - Sur la Schwarzenbergplatz, le monument soviétique de 1945 rend hommage aux milliers de soldats de l'Armée rouge morts en mettant fin à la domination nazie à Vienne. Un rappel que libération et occupation peuvent cohabiter dans la mémoire.
Hochstrahlbrunnen & Ambassade Française Une fontaine monumentale célébrant l’eau du robinet alpine de Vienne, encadrée par l’élégante ambassade Française — deux puissances alliées, deux messages architecturaux très différents.
Un court trajet en tramway le long de la Ringstraße – projet de prestige du XIXe siècle à Vienne – nous amène devant l’Opéra national reconstruit, symbole de continuité culturelle après les destructions de la guerre.
Mozart préside un jardin qui appartenait autrefois à la cour impériale. À quelques pas de là : l'Académie des beaux-arts, qui a rejeté un jeune Adolf Hitler — note que l'histoire a transformée en titre.
Marie-Thérèse commande toujours sa place, flanquée des musées jumeaux. En arrière-plan : l’une des six tours FLAK de Vienne – témoins indestructibles des derniers mois militarisés de la ville.
Cérémonie impériale, fierté militaire et, en mars 1938, discours d’Anschluss d’Hitler. Aujourd'hui, la place est encadrée par le parlement, l'hôtel de ville, les musées et le Burgtheater : un panorama du pouvoir, de la culture et de la fragilité des deux.
Un palais-ville qui a servi de siège au pouvoir pendant sept siècles. Des ducs aux empereurs en passant par la présidence moderne, le bâtiment incarne le long arc autrichien de la monarchie à la république.
Où les façades impériales rencontrent la grandeur ecclésiastique et les boutiques de luxe d’aujourd’hui. Un rappel que Vienne a toujours su concilier cérémonie, commerce et spiritualité.
Sur le site de la communauté juive médiévale de Vienne — détruite en 1421 — se dresse la « Bibliothèque sans nom », commémorant les 65 000 Juifs autrichiens assassinés dans la Shoah. Un arrêt calme et essentiel.
La colonne de la peste : la Contre-Réforme en marbre, utilisant l’art et la dévotion pour reconquérir une ville après la crise.
Cathédrale Saint-Étienne Le cœur gothique de Vienne. En avril 1945, des parties de la cathédrale brûlèrent lorsque des pillards incendièrent des magasins à proximité — une fin tragique à une guerre qui avait déjà coûté si cher à la ville.

The tour guide did a fabulous job showing us sites we did not see and also incorporating sites we had seen and putting the history altogether. It was enjoyable and informative. We appreciate his changing the schedule so we ended up at our last separate tour for the day. Great job all around.

We are a family of 4 from London and visited Vienna, Budapest and Prague in August 2025. We went on a private walking tour of Vienna with Schindl tours. Brigitte. Was our guide for a tour of Hidden Gems in Vienna. She pivoted the tour to show us the wonderful hidden gems in Vienna. She was so knowledgeable and thoughtful in the tour. She answered our questions with great patience and humour. Her insights into the history, art and culture of Vienna were incredible. She shared anecdotal facts for so many of the interesting sites we visited. From the Jesuit church, to the Jewish memorial. From the Anker (anchor) insurance company building to the Anker clock . She also showed us amazing passageways which connected different areas of interest around Vienna. We learned and saw so much more of Vienna than we ever could have done on our own. Brigitte took the time to ensure we had a proper dinner on Christmas Day. She stopped at a restaurant and booked us a table for our Christmas dinner (when most restaurants were closed).. Lastly, she even hopped on the subway train with us to show us the route back to our hotel. Being with Brigitte was one of our most memorable experiences in Vienna. Our guide, Walter, was fantastic. Born and revised in Vienna, with a decade in the US, we knew every aspect of the city, its history and the significance to the West. He started with a conversation about what we had already seen and how long we were going to be in Vienna and what else we were scheduled to do. Walter taylored our tour to see everything else as well as knowing the history and culture. He was a master of the subway, trains and trolleys so we got to see the whole city which is amazing. He was own time and reminded of an old world gentleman. A fantastic experience that I highly recommend.
