The tour exceeded our expectations. Mr Fordham was extremely knowledgeable in our topics of interest, personable, engaged and concerned for our overall comfort. His musical inclusion and voices were an added plus. We will definitely recommend to others.
This activity was recommended in the NYT 36 hours in Charleston SC. It was a humbling experience learning about the lost stories, the more I learn the more I know I don’t know! Damon is an entertainer and a wonderful storyteller, I recommend doing this on day 1 to make strolling around downtown meaningful AND engaging! The only issue I had was booking through viator it did not allow me to book for a solo traveler so I had to pay for two instead of one!
Damon was very knowledgeable, theatrical and entertaining. We really enjoyed learning about these lost stories and it helped round out our vacation from a cultural and historical perspective. Thank you ✨🙌🏾
This tour focuses on the incredible stories of Black history in Charleston. One suggestion: be sure to follow the tour guide's directions, as he can become distracted if the group gets off track. Overall, I learned a lot and came away with a deeper appreciation of the history shared during the tour.

Wear comfortable shoes. Damon Fordham was our tour guide and he is a wealth of knowledge. He provides an accurate depiction of the history that African Americans played in Charleston and how some of that influence actions nationwide. Charleston played a huge role in American history from the revolution to the civil rights activity. Mr. Fordham articulate that splendidly.

We met @ Buxton Bookstore were Damon met us to start our tour. We did have to wait a few minutes for others to catch up, but still completed the tour on time. Damon Fordham has a rich background in the Gullah culture both as a descendent and professor, having written a number of books on the subject. His stories, factual recollections and writings were something you won’t find on a typical tour. Very enlightening and entertaining. At the end of the tour he signed copies of his books for those who were interested. Very well done
