Description

Gerald was recommended to us by Gabriel who had taken us on our day tour to Soweto whilst we were in Johannesburg. What an absolutely fabulous private tour for the 4 of us of Bo-Kaap this was. Unmissable. Gerald is extremely knowledgeable of all Bo - Kaaps historical and current aspects and conveys this in such an interesting way. We were captivated the entire time. We loved the street art. Gerald is an ebullient character full of life and joie de vivre, that made it even more enjoyable. We learnt alot and could feel our IQ rising with each step. We loved sharing in the local coffee afterwards. Bo- Kaap is incredibly interesting both historically and visually. A gem not to be missed especially with Gerald.
Thank you so much for the lovely review. It was a privilege and a joy to host you on tour!
Gerald doesn’t just give a tour, he builds a narrative you can actually carry with you for the rest of your time in Cape Town and S Africa at large. This was the perfect way to spend my first full day in the city. The tour covered everything described, the layered history, from pre-colonial context through the Industrial Revolution and the Scramble for Africa, and he somehow made it all feel cohesive, human, and grounded in the places you’re physically standing. And then he kept going, adding nuance, side stories, and connections that you just wouldn’t get from reading or a more standard tour. It’s an easy walk, but it never feels like you’re just “moving along.” There’s space to pause, take things in, ask questions (or in my case, offer some very questionable guesses about history), and actually engage. Gerald was incredibly kind and patient, never rushed, never condescending, just genuinely invested in making sure it all clicked. The pacing is thoughtful, the stops are well chosen, and the mix of history, storytelling, and just experiencing the city’s energy makes it feel like much more than a walking tour. It sets you up to understand Cape Town's history in context with the history of South Africa in a deeper way for the rest of your trip. Also appreciated the moments to grab a drink, reset, and just take it all in. 10/10 recommend, especially if you want your introduction to Cape Town to feel meaningful.
Thank you so much for the lovely review. Lindsay. I am so glad you enjoyed it all!
I've done walking tours in over a dozen cities around the world. This tour with Gerald was head and shoulders above any other tour. I might have to put it out of my mind because I don't think any future tour will ever compare! Yes, I know it's not a free walking tour, but it is much more than worth the price. I felt like it was a master class in Cape Town and its history, and delivered in a very approachable way. My husband and I did the Understanding Cape Town tour one day and the Bristling Bo-Kaap tour two days later. They complemented each other perfectly. But, if you had to choose only one, choose the Cape Town one because it's more comprehensive. Gerald was such a nice person, too!
Thank you for the lovely review. It was a privilege to host you.
Excellent experience! We did the Understanding Cape Town and Understanding Johannesburg tours. Both extremely interesting and fun at the same time. Highly recommend!
Thank you for the lovely review and for touring with us twice. Much appreciated!
Gerald is the best guide. Very knowledgeable, i would definitely do another tour with him. Highly recommended Marina.
Thank you for your lovely words. It was great having you on tour.
If you want to learn about history rather than just snap trope pics, I highly recommend spending time with Gerard! I did the 1/2 day Understanding Cape Town walking tour on my first morning in Cape Town, and it was the perfect introduction. Gerard is extremely knowledgeable and presents the history of not only Cape Town, but Africa, in an accessible and engaging way. What I learned helped me to understand what I saw in the following weeks in Africa from a newly informed perspective. We stopped for refreshments at a delightful place called Seven Colours Eatery which I went back to the following day for lunch - also recommended! If I'm ever back in Cape Town I'd love to continue on with the Contemporary Cape Town city tour. Thank you Gerard!
Thank you so much for the lovely review!
Even before our trip, Gerald was incredibly helpful in giving us recommendations and answering any questions we had. We did the Understanding Cape Town Walking Tour on our first day, and it was great to get a better idea of where everything was located in the city and to develop a deeper understanding of the historical context. Gerald was an engaging storyteller and was extremely knowledgeable. One of the highlights of the tour was stopping for a quick bite at Seven Colours Eatery. We enjoyed it so much that we went back on our last day for a full meal. I would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in learning more about Cape Town's history.
Thank you so much for the lovely review!
Gerald focused on the history of South Africa and Capetown. He used an interesting story telling approach. The 3 of us were very engaged and found this tour a great way to begin our time in Capetown. Very highly recommended. Thank you Gerald!
Thank you for the lovely review!
Gerald used stories and immediacy ("imagine Prince Alfred standing here, with the same view you are seeing now") to bring history to life. The focus of this tour was the founding and growth of Cape Town into a city, and the creation of the country of South Africa. Gerald is an excellent storyteller and easily kept my attention. The pace was leisurely, with a couple of stops to sit for a story.
Thank you for the lovely review. It was a pleasure to host you on tour.
Gerald is not only a very knowledgeable guide, he is also a great storyteller. We really enjoyed our walk with him, learned so much about the history of the city, South Africa and European colonialism. It’s an easy walk with some nice stops for coffee or local snacks along the way. Would definitely do it again!
Thank you so much for touring with us!
