Bienvenue à Rajarata ! (Le Comté du Roi ou Le Pays des Rois) Nous commencerons notre journée depuis le monastère de la forêt de Vessagiriya, qui est l'une des deux plus anciennes habitations vivantes des moines bouddhistes de l'île. À Vessagiriya, les invités commenceront à plonger en profondeur dans la civilisation cinghalaise ancienne nourrie de bouddhisme, d'agriculture, de beaux-arts, d'architecture, de métiers, de relations internationales et de merveilles envoûtantes d'ingénierie et là, vous aurez une idée de la façon dont Anuradhapura ressemblait à son âge d'or depuis son tout début.
Caché sur le flanc d’une paroi rocheuse du Ran Masu Uyana (le parc royal du poisson rouge) pris en sandwich entre le Tissa Wewa et le temple rocheux Isurumuniya à Anuradhapura, le Sri Lanka est un artefact unique de l’ancien Sri Lanka qui est localement connu sous le nom de « Bawa Chakraya » ou « Sakwala Chakraya.
L'arbre Sri Maha Bodhi ou l'arbre sacré Bodhi (un figuier ou arbre pipal scientifiquement connu sous le nom de Ficus Religiosa) est considéré comme le premier des huit lieux sacrés d'Anuradhapura. Il s'agit de la branche droite de l'arbre Sri Maha Bodhi à Bodh Gaya en Inde sous laquelle le Siddhartha ascétique a atteint l'illumination, et a été envoyé par l'empereur Ashoka par l'intermédiaire de sa fille bien-aimée, la religieuse bouddhiste Theri Sanghamitta, à la demande du roi cinghalais Devanampiyatissa au IIIe siècle avant notre ère. À partir de ce moment, il a été vénéré par les rois successifs, les moines, les nonnes et les bouddhistes laïcs, car il est une connexion vivante avec le Bouddha Gautama. En particulier, il est généralement admis qu'il s'agirait du plus vieil arbre vivant planté par l'homme dans le monde avec les plus longues traces écrites et actuellement près de 2300 ans.
Au nord ou l'arbre sacré de Bodhi, nous pouvons assister à une énorme collection de piliers de granit debout qui a été identifié comme le bâtiment délabré de l'ancien palais d'airain qui était autrefois le centre administratif de l'ancien complexe du monastère Maha Vihara construit sous la direction du grand roi Gamini Abhaya au IIe siècle avant notre ère, un petit-fils du roi Devanampiyatissa. C'était un bâtiment de neuf étages avec 1000 chambres différentes. Le nom, Brazen Palce provient du fait que son toit était en chaume avec des tuiles de cuivre.
Ruwanveliseya stupa également connu sous le nom de Ratnamali ou le Mahathupa (Th Great Stupa) a été construit sous la direction du Grand Genre Gamini Abhaya au IIe siècle av. Les chroniques décrivent fantastiquement la cérémonie d'inauguration de ce Stupa comme une grande fête qui s'est tenue à Anuradhapura avec la participation d'invités même d'autres pays en tant que diplomates. Cependant, il a été détruit lors de l'invasion Chola par 10ème siècle AC et a été restauré le stupa à sa gloire originale au 12ème siècle AC par le roi Parakkramabahu le plus grand. Alors quoi qu'il en soit, ce que nous voyons aujourd'hui est la forme restaurée la plus récente qui a été complétée par Ratnamali Stupa Development Society en 1940, ce qui a été initié en premier lieu par Ven. Naranvita Sumanasara Thero en 1873 alors qu'il voulait lui redonner sa gloire d'antan.
Cette paire pittoresque d'étangs construits sur le terrain bas sont sans aucun doute des spécimens exquis de l'architecture de paysage et bien sûr un merveilleux système hydraulique montrant non seulement les talents mais le sens esthétique de ces gens magnifiques.
C'est vraiment quelque chose comme un bain de vapeur moderne, mais ce n'était pas seulement pour profiter d'un bain de vapeur avec de l'eau tiède, mais d'un médicament sinhalais bien développé qui a fonctionné dans le 4ème siècle AC à partir. Là-bas, nous pouvons discuter de son fonctionnement et de la façon dont les moines malades de l'Université Abhayagiriya guérissent leurs décès cutanés.
Là, nous reverrons une grande auge en granit en forme de stands de canoë avec une taille-douce étonnante dans les locaux du réfectoire du monastère d'Abhayagiriya. Le moine chinois Fa-hsien qui étudiait à l'Université Abhayagiriya au Ve siècle de notre ère a enregistré qu'il y avait 5000 moines bouddhistes dans le monastère et que cette auge particulière pouvait contenir suffisamment de riz pour un tel nombre.
Il s'agit de l'une des plus belles œuvres d'art au Sri Lanka qui remonte à environ le VIIIe siècle de notre ère. Et ce chef-d’œuvre met précieusement en valeur le sens esthétique des anciens artisans et comment ils ont incroyablement mis en pratique leurs connaissances, leurs capacités, leurs talents, leurs sentiments.
Ceci est populairement connu comme l'Eth-Pokuna pour les habitants ou l'étang des éléphants en anglais, situé au sud-ouest du Réfectoire est peut-être le plus grand étang fait par l'homme en Asie qui a été construit au IIIe siècle AC. On dit que c'est trois fois plus grand qu'une piscine olympique moderne. Le miracle ici n'est pas seulement sa taille énorme, mais les conduits souterrains qui fonctionnent toujours et ont été l'alimentation en eau de l'étang à partir des réservoirs voisins et dans le coin sud-ouest, nous pouvons noter une écluse de citerne qui suggère que l'eau a été distribuée à d'autres étangs relativement plus petits dans les environs, ce qui montre les superbes compétences en génie hydraulique des anciens Cinghalais.
La pierre de lune est une autre création la plus belle et la plus époustouflante du sculpteur antique. Il sert de paillasson au pied d'une volée de marches vers un sanctuaire bouddhiste, mais le sculpteur le transforme en œuvre d'art de loin excellence.

Lucky took us through the most interesting monastries and ruïnes and told passionatly about budhism and it’s history. Lucky had been a guide since 12 years and knows a lot about Budhism. Overall is was a very fun experience and I learned a lot from Lucky!

I had an outstanding guided tour in Anuradhapura and can highly recommend it. Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the history of the ancient city. His understanding of archaeology, architecture, and Buddhist philosophy was impressive, and he explained everything in a structured, engaging way. Lucky was an amazing guide. He has deep knowledge of Buddhism, history and archaeology and brought the stones and sights to life. His English is excellent and he tells lots of stories. The day started with an overview of the life of Buddha and his teachings- and, importantly, how they relate to Buddhism as practiced today. As we explored the amazing sights, Lucky would point out interesting details and relate them to the bigger picture that he was building. We also visited Mihinthale to finish the day which was a great add on. I highly recommend Lucky as a guide.
