This package essentially combines tickets for the Scenic Railway and Skyrail Cableway, both of which can easily be booked directly. The only additional service provided is coach pickup and drop-off. The coach collects passengers from multiple locations before heading to the train station, which adds considerable travel time. On the return journey, you must take a specific scheduled Skyrail service. Even if you arrive at the terminal on time, queues can cause delays. In our case, we were delayed boarding the cableway(not our fault) and missed our return coach. Rather than waiting for the next coach, which would have taken around 1 hour 40 minutes due to multiple hotel drop-offs, we took an Uber back to our resort. The journey took only about 15 minutes and was inexpensive. My recommendation is to skip this tour package and book the Scenic Railway and Skyrail tickets directly. Uber is affordable and readily available in Cairns, making it a much quicker and more practical option than the coach transfers.
It was a wonderful trip to take with my family. We chose to take the train first and then the railway, but since it was quite crowded on the way back, I think it would be more enjoyable to take the railway up and the train back down to better manage your time. Nevertheless, it was a satisfying trip overall.
Good experience. The cable car ride is wonderful, as well as the railroad back to Waterfront station. We could have spend more time in Kuranda, there are many places to explore and 2,5h is not enough for that. I’d recommend to start the tour a bit earlier. The bus transfer from hotels to Waterfront station has room for improvements as well - our driver/guide could have been more enthusiastic.
The overall activity of taking the scenic railway to Kurunda, having multiple options at the top and taking the Sky Rail back was great! I went to the Kuranda Koala Garden and got some great pics with the koalas! The communication from Down Under Tours was not so great and I was not the only one who had this experience. All the communication I received from them including the ticket said 8:15, however they arrived to pick me up at 7:30 and of course I was not there yet so they left without me. Other guests were told 8:15 or 8:40, and they finally came at 8:50 to pick up. One person tried to reach out the day before to confirm the pick up time, and was not able to get an answer. Down Under Tours is basically a bus company who provides the transportation, and buys the train/sky rail ticket. This trip can be done by taking an uber or taxi to the train and buying a ticket. Then you will also be able to stay as long as you want in Kuranda since you don't have to return at a preassigned time. The trains only run 2 times in the morning, but the skyrail runs more frequently. So, overall it's a nice day trip, but can easily be done independently and not through a tour group.
If you can combine unique rides through the world's oldest rainforest with glimpses into its history, you've got the makings of a great trip. Heading out via cable car was a fun start to our day. Once in Kuranda, we had lunch, did some shopping where I bought a shirt featuring Aboriginal artwork, then we took a boat ride on the river before boarding the train back to Cairns. So much nature, history and fun, we didn't want the day to end.
Keep an eye on the time an plan ahead. It seemed easy to miss your coach/bus return if not on time.. Otherwise a fantastic day out, wushed I'd given ourselves a little more time up in tge village.
Terrible experience with this company. We booked and they took our money and but didn’t confirm the booking straight away. After day of “pending” status, I tried to contact the tour operator and received no reply. I had to call Tripadvisor the afternoon before the tour and they were able to contact them and were told they had no capacity. As we had other things planned for our other days, we missed out on going to Kuranda. Had they told us this at the time of booking, I would have been able to look at alternatives.
Spectacular views on both the train and sky rail! The rangers tour was excellent and Kuranda was great, the bird park a must!!!!
Customer service was amazing - I booked overnight and needed to change pickup location for the mornings tour. Tour operator got back to me before their 6am opening hours and when bus was 5 min late, I called and got straight through to be advised it was 5 min away and no need to worry. Bus drivers were lovely and helpful too.
This is a stunningly beautiful tour up and down the mountain to Kuranda. The "over the base ticket price" is somewhat steep for what Down Under Tours provides (shuttle to and from the station), but they offer curb service and make sure everything is working. The gondola ride is the highlight, with panoramic views of the entire area. Train ride is also spectacular, and the history is interesting. The day we left, one of the scenic railway conductors did not show up. and we had to wait about 80 minutes qt the station, which left less time in Kuranda (NOT the fault of Down Under Tours). But the town itself is mostly trinket shops and some restaurants. One does not need more than two hours at the top. I would recommend Down Under Tours to anyone.
