Istanbul Hodjapasha Derviches Tourbillonnants Show & Exhibition

A wonderful experience into the mysticism of the rituals of the Whirling Dervish. Before the show there are various exhibits as to the history and nature of this practice. The staging is perfect as it consists of two seating areas in circles overlooking the circular stage. Thus there is not a bad seat nor obstructed views. The musicians and singers are in an elevated area and the performers arrive as the dance then proceeds. There are projections made unto the walls explaining what you are witnessing.

The Whirling Dervishes is a religious ritual. It is a good idea to arrive about a half an hour early to walk through the display. It will give you more context when watching the performance.

A beautiful and deeply spiritual experience. Remember, the Whirling Dervishes ceremony is a religious ritual rather than an entertainment show, so applause is discouraged. Don’t expect belly dancing or a typical cultural performance. I loved the traditional music, peaceful atmosphere, and sense of connection the ceremony created. It felt meditative and almost soul-searching. As a solo traveller, it fitted my Istanbul trip perfectly. Highly recommended if you appreciate culture, spirituality, and a moment of quiet reflection.

It is a mystical experience that allows you to meet your inner self. It is not a show but a ceremony.

It was an experience that borders on the mystical. We arrived at the cultural center, they offered us a very welcome glass of water, and we were able to visit the small exhibition before the ceremony. In the exhibition, the meaning of the clothes, the philosophy, and the ritual is explained with panels, wax figures, original clothes, and musical instruments. The ceremony takes place in an intimate space; there are about 200 seats, but in a circle around the round stage. One should not expect a show, but a true prayer with the mind and body, a suffering shared and accompanied by live music and singing. The whole thing is extremely touching

Brilliant experience in a perfect setting

I was really looking forward to this experience, but it was underwhelming. The atmosphere didn’t feel special or spiritual, rather cold!

Five men engaging in a twirling demonstration for one hour. Mystical? Yes. But only because we hadn’t a clue about the significance of what we were watching, other than that somehow the twirling was getting the twirling men closer to perfection.
