il a été construit vers le milieu du 5ème siècle, à la demande de Galla Placidia, qui a régné sur l'Empire romain d'Occident. Ce petit mausolée à croix latine, à l'extérieur, est très simple, tandis qu'à l'intérieur, il présente une riche décoration en mosaïque. Les innombrables étoiles de la coupole ont frappé l'imagination et la sensibilité des visiteurs au fil des siècles, ainsi que des personnalités marquantes comme le grand poète Dante Alighieri, qui s'en est inspiré pour la rédaction de certains vers de la Divine Comédie.
C'est l'un des monuments les plus importants de l'art chrétien primitif en Italie. Le monument est du VIe siècle, d'influence orientale claire, il a un plan octogonal, surmonté d'un grand dôme décoré de fresques. Quand on entre dans la basilique, le regard est capturé par les hauts espaces, les superbes décorations en mosaïque de l'abside et l'extraordinaire représentation du couple impérial de Byzance, Giustiniano et Teodora, avec leurs défilés.
l'un des monuments les plus anciens de la ville, en brique simple à l'extérieur mais riche en marbre, stuc et mosaïques avec une nette influence hellénistique-romaine à l'intérieur. Dominant la coupole, commandée par l'évêque Neone au milieu du Ve siècle, se trouve la scène du Baptême du Christ entouré d'une procession très raffinée des douze Apôtres qui se détache sur un fond brillant de tesselles bleues. A l'intérieur se trouvent encore les fonts baptismaux d'époque Renaissance, qui reprend la forme octogonale du plan du Baptistère et qui conserve l'ambon du Ve siècle.

Our guide Chiara was wonderful, passionate and very clear in her explanations. She gave us a wealth of captivating information about the mosaics, the monuments and the history of Ravenna, and it was never boring for a moment. We opted for the tour of the 5 monuments. The guide (Sergio) was experienced and very friendly and gave us a lot of insight - background information, artistic details and stories we would otherwise have missed out. The tour also had educational value for our children (13 and 11).
I had the pleasure of repeating the "mosaic by night" experience after visiting San Vitale and Galla Placidia last year, also at night. This time I admired the Neonian Baptistery and Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, two true wonders of Ravennate art. Evocative experience immersed in the dreamy and suspended atmosphere of Ravenna at night.
