Merzouga est une petite ville marocaine dans le désert du Sahara, près de la frontière algérienne. Il est connu comme une porte d'entrée vers l'Erg Chebbi, une immense étendue de dunes de sable au nord de la ville. À l'ouest de Merzouga, Dayet Srji est un lac salé saisonnier qui s'assèche souvent en été. Lorsqu'il est plein, il attire un large éventail d'oiseaux migrateurs et du désert, y compris des fauvettes du désert, des engoulevent égyptienne et, parfois, des flamants roses.
