Be ready to hike! Depending on which harbor you arrive in, you have a 60 minute or 90 minute uphill hike to the summit. It’s all or nothing because if you don’t make it to the summit, you get no beautiful view. Just a nice walk in a lava field. Bring your own food and drink and there are no picnic tables to eat at. You have four hours to climb to the summit, take your selfie, eat your food, and get back down before the ferry leaves. That is your mission if you choose to accept.
The Ferry was cancelled and we could not take the next one due to other time commitments. Check in first before you go as we had no notification until we arrived at the Ferry Dock.
Rangitoto Island is beautiful, unlike anywhere else I have been. The lava flows were spectacular. Would recommend a visit.
The ferry to Rangitoto arrived on time. However, this particular online booking system done through Viator (this platform) needs to be changed! When making the booking, you can only select the departure time, but not the return time. On the way to the island, we were told the ferry would come pick us up at three different times: 12:45pm, 2:30pm, and 3:30pm. When we lined up for the 12:45pm ferry back to Auckland, they were checking tickets to see if we had the correct departure time. People who purchased their tickets in-person or at the kiosk were fine, but we were not because on Viator, selecting a return time was not an option. The booking only allows you to select a departure time. It notes that the return ferry is included in the price, but does not offer the option to select the return ferry time. Luckily, we explained it to the boat crew when we boarded the return ferry, and they let us on the boat, but please, can you modify the Viator booking to allow for the option to select a return ferry time as well?
Excellent walk. Wonderful landscapes and stunning views. I recommend everyone to take this tour.
You be careful. Before yesterday and a ticket to - from 48h and be an expert weatherman. I bought a ticket the day before in the late afternoon a departure for Rangitoto at 1030 the next day, 16 hours later. The next day it rains hard, I go to the agency of the Ferry Building and ask them their opinion on hiking (zero restaurant or snack to be warm) . They tell me it's not the right day. I ask if I can be reimbursed because I leave the next day. They can do nothing and ask for an email address. I address a Mail to inform them that due to the weather conditions I had only taken the ferry and as I left the next day exceptionally they could do something. The reply received was: 48 hours before to cancel. What of 3:00? It's not written on the ticket. Same on the site it is written all the services of which likely to be modified. .. I sent 2 other emails reminding the date of the purchase and then asking for a commercial gesture 50%. ZERO response. I am a tourist who I do not stay so why answer even a No. In short BAD SERVICE AFTER SALE.

Found out before excursion that there was no food or water on the island. We did not have any supplies, so we tried to cancel. But Viator said it was too late cancel. So we did not go and hand to forfeit what we paid for the tickets.
I made the river tour with the Fullers 360, and it was very good, with English guide, clean boat, ground and board staff very attentive and during the time navigating always very careful to see if everything was in order during the tour thus ensuring the safety of all passengers, the crew and the boat too. Bring a sun filter, do not forget a light blouse, because sometimes the strong wind gets cold. It was worth it, super recommend.
We got the ferry across the Hauraki Gulf to Rangitoto Island. Convenient efficient punctual and comfortable crossing. Rangitoto Island is only 600 years old, the youngest volcano in New Zealand. There has been a significant restoration programme and the island is considered pest-free. We walked thro' lava fields and forests to the island summit 260m and the long way back to the dock. Panoramic views of Auckland. Great day out. Take water & a picnic & waterproofs.
Description on Viator Explore the volcanic terrain of Rangitoto Island aboard a 4WD tractor-pulled tram on this half-day guided tour. During your off-road adventure, hear commentary about the island’s history, geology and rich plant life, including the largest preserved pohutukawa forest in the world. Reality: Tthe tractor train no longer operates and was removed from the island a few years ago. It is really irresponsible from Viator side to continue to offer this tour while it has been a few years since it was discontinued
