Khor Virap est le lieu de pèlerinage le plus célèbre d'Arménie, car il est directement lié à l'adoption du christianisme. En tant que religion d'État, le christianisme en Arménie a été adopté en 301 en raison des efforts de saint Grégoire l'Illuminateur, qui, avant de convertir le roi Trdat Le 3 au christianisme, a été emprisonné dans le donjon, sur lequel une église du monastère de Khor Virap a été construite au 17ème siècle. Du monastère, on peut admirer la vue imprenable sur le mont biblique Ararat.
Réparti entre les montagnes, le réservoir Azat réunit l'eau et le ciel, créant l'une des vues les plus impressionnantes et paisibles de l'Arménie.
Le temple Garni, qui domine un cap triangulaire, est l'exemple unique de la culture païenne en Arménie. C'est un mélange de styles gréco-romain et arménien. Le roi Trdat Le Premier ordonna la construction du temple au premier siècle de notre ère et le dédia au Dieu du Soleil. Après avoir adopté le christianisme en 301, le temple païen perdit de son importance et la forteresse de Garni devint la résidence d'été des rois. De nos jours, les ruines du palais royal et la salle de bain avec une superbe œuvre en mosaïque peuvent être trouvées près du temple.
Le monastère de Geghard est le chef-d'œuvre indépassable de l'architecture arménienne du XIIIe siècle. Certaines des églises du complexe sont taillées de main de maître dans un énorme rocher. Dès le début, le complexe s'appelait Ayrivank (monastère rupestre), puis il a été renommé Geghard (lance) car la lance, utilisée par le soldat romain pour piquer du côté de Jésus-Christ, avait été conservée dans ce monastère pendant de nombreux siècles. Grâce à sa construction, Geghardavank est le meilleur endroit pour chanter des chants spirituels. Le complexe est riche de subtils embellissements sculpturaux et de nombreux khatchkars (croix de pierre) saisissants. Le site est inscrit sur la liste du patrimoine culturel mondial de l'UNESCO.

We went on an individual tour to the monasteries of Khor Virap, Noravank, Gegard and the Temple of Garni. Besides the main points of the tour, driver Arakel showed us many interesting places: the village with storks, the Azatic reservoir, beautiful views of mountain passes and Ararat. The company arranged for us to have lunch at the Noravanck monastery with a great view of the rocks. Overall, the tour went very well, if we book tours, it will only be in this campaign

I booked the private tour from Hyur’s official website - which is much cheaper than the one advertised on Tripadvisor (I suppose TA takes commission). The customer service contacted me three days prior to confirm the details and answered all kinds of my questions. The driver Arman was very professional and polite and went above and beyond to take me to bus station twice to purchase an intercity mini bus ticket. He couldn’t speak much English but whenever it’s something important he called his office to translate to me to make sure there is no misunderstanding. At each place, I got to spend as much time as I wanted and enjoyed the great views and architectures of the monasteries. Highly recommend this private tour to people who want to travel at their own pace.

We booked the tour 24 hours in advance, was processed fast and well. Driver Arakel was waiting for us at 8 in the morning as agreed. As we were going through different viewpoints he explained facts about history, culture, people and a lot more. We even stopped for berries to keep the energy levels high with natural sugar. Took photos of us and a lot more. Had the pleasure to share lunch together as well. Safe. Lovely. Fun. If you are visiting Armenia and want to get a tour, this is the way to do it!
