Le château de Versailles, ou en français "Château de Versailles", est l'un des plus grands châteaux du monde. Classé au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, le château de Versailles est l'une des plus belles réalisations de l'art français au XVIIe siècle. L'ancien pavillon de chasse de Louis XIII fut transformé et agrandi par son fils Louis XIV qui installa sa cour et son gouvernement en 1682. Jusqu'à la Révolution française, les rois ont réussi en embellissant chacun le château. Ce joyau royal est définitivement un monument français incontournable. Aventurez-vous dans le palais, découvrez son architecture spectaculaire et ses splendides salles comme les appartements du roi et de la reine, de nombreux salons avec ses histoires et le design à couper le souffle de Mirror Hall pour impressionner les visiteurs avec ses trois cent cinquante sept miroirs, ses marbres et ses bronzes décorations et ses sculptures en bronze doré. La construction de la chapelle royale s'achève en 1710, à la fin du règne de Louis XIV. C'était la cinquième et dernière chapelle construite dans le palais depuis le règne de Louis XIII. Le projet fut présenté au roi par Jules Hardouin-Mansart en 1699. Malheureusement, le premier architecte du roi mourut en 1708 avant la fin des travaux, achevés par son beau-frère, Robert de Cotte.
Le Royal Opera est l'une des plus grandes œuvres de l'architecte Ange-Jacques Gabriel. Inauguré en 1770 sous le règne de Louis XV, il était à l'époque la plus grande salle de concert d'Europe et constituait également une grande prouesse technique et un exploit impressionnant de raffinement décoratif. Théâtre de la vie monarchique puis républicaine, il a accueilli des célébrations, des spectacles et des débats parlementaires.

La création de jardins nécessite un travail gigantesque d'une quarantaine d'années: nivellement d'espaces, aménagement paysager de jardins, création d'étangs et du canal. Louis XIV considérait les jardins comme important que le château. André Le Nôtre a créé un jardin à la française par excellence: une terrasse avec une vue globale sur les jardins, une organisation géométrique des axes, des étangs, des parterres de fleurs, des bosquets. Le jardin est conçu comme un bâtiment, une promenade jouant sur les perspectives. Charles Le Brun a dessiné un grand nombre de statues et de fontaines. Les 221 sculptures font de Versailles le plus grand musée de sculptures en plein air au monde. Des fontaines et des bosquets ornent les jardins. Les bosquets ont régulièrement accueilli la promenade du roi et les divertissements de la cour. Appréciez une promenade dans les jardins de Le Nôtre. Chaque été, Versailles propose de superbes animations dans les jardins pour donner aux visiteurs l'expérience de la magnificence des célébrations dans le jardin à l'époque de Louis XIV. Le petit trianon En 1758, Louis XV planifie la construction d'un nouveau petit château. Il ordonne à Ange-Jacques Gabriel, un pavillon royal, de loger l'intimité de sa faveur, madame de Pompadour. Le Petit Trianon est un véritable emblème de l'architecture néo-classique. À la mort de Louis XV, Louis XVI l'offrira à sa jeune épouse, Marie-Antoinette. Elle change le jardin botanique de Louis XV par un somptueux jardin anglo-chinois. Une visite au Petit Trianon est une immersion émouvante dans la vie quotidienne de Marie Antoinette, reine profondément humaine. Souvent accusé de frivolité, il se terminerait tragiquement pendant la Révolution française. Abordez la personnalité de cette figure historique, réputée pour sa beauté, sa modernité et ses divertissements somptueux. Profitez des jardins pour découvrir le Temple de l'Amour et le Belvédère, chers à la reine. Le Grand Trianon est un bâtiment unique, avec sa loggia centrale qui assure une réelle transparence entre la cour et les jardins. En 1687, Louis XIV ordonna la construction d'un "petit palais de marbre rose et porphyrique avec de magnifiques jardins", selon l'architecte Jules Hardouin-Mansart. Le château s'appelle alors "marbre Trianon". Ce bâtiment en marbre rose combine subtilement somptuosité et intimité. De nombreux décors sculptés originaux sont visibles dans les appartements, ainsi qu'un magnifique mobilier Empire. Le Grand Trianon est entouré de jardins à la française dont les innombrables fleurs et bosquets contribuent à créer une atmosphère de détente. Le Queen's Hamlet, construit entre 1783 et 1786 par Richard Mique, coïncide avec le goût du temps pour les charmes de la vie rurale. Ce petit village "comme à la campagne" avait des maisons faites soit pour le simple divertissement comme la salle de billard, soit pour une vraie fonction agricole comme les laiteries ou la ferme. C'était un lieu de rencontre privé pour la reine et ses plus proches amis, un lieu de loisirs.

We had Jean-Paul as our tour guide and he was fabulous. He was charming, funny, a great photographer (and patient haha), and ever-knowledgeable about everything we saw! He even grew up in Versailles and could give us the insider’s view. We saw much more than we would’ve seen with anyone else. He made the experience so enjoyable. My wife and I spent the day at Versailles with our private guide Jean Paul. He picked us at our hotel and navigated the roads and freeways of Paris. On the way, we watched a traffic piled up for miles behind striking cab drivers on the other side of the road. I was glad to have a local avoiding this chaos. Jean Paul was very knowledgeable and educated about French, European and global history. This was very helpful in understanding how Versailles fit into this history. I especially enjoyed Trianon and the model of a French village.

this was an incredible experience. We were picked up in the morning by Claude. He took us around the gardens, the chateau and then through the Trianon. Claude’s knowledge of the property and of French history was vast and added to the experience. At the end of the day, Claude drove us back to our hotel in Paris. This was a great day and worth the price.

Such a memorable day exploring the Palace and gardens with Gilles! You cannot know French history without diving into Louis XIV, and this passion project of his gives you a lot of context for his reign- the longest of any monarch in the world. Our friendly and informative guide picked us up in Paris at our hotel with a spacious and comfortable van and stayed with us the entire day (except lunch), returning us back to our hotel. The tour of the palace and walking of the grounds was well-paced, with just enough information and fascinating facts to enhance the experience that is already visually jaw-dropping. It is a LOT of walking, so comfy shoes are essential. The guide will also adjust to your pace and desires for breaks, a lunch of your chosen length, etc. Gilles is warm, laid back (which is really refreshing in the busy crowd of the palace), and highly knowledgeable - we would definitely recommend him and this amazing tour of a truly decadent French icon!

The tour was amazing. Ange was our tour guide and he was so patient, accommodated and knowledgeable about the place. It was a pretty good day although it could have been better. First, Gilles was very nice and a very good tour guide. My husband and I enjoy hearing about Versailles and learned a lot. Our granddaughter was bored and he didn’t engage with her too much on the elements of the tour, although he was very nice to her. The organization of the trip, however, could be better. We were picked up at 8:00 but had an 11:40 entry into the chateau. Even with the walking in the gardens we had some time to kill that we could have used at the end. It also meant retracing our steps since we couldn’t do the chateau and then the gardens and then over to the 2 other palaces. My husband is 71 and it was really too much walking for him - 6 miles by the count of my Apple Watch. If that was the only time the tour operator could get it would have been better to book a later start time and return later. The other thing I would strongly recommend is that you do not go to the fancy restaurant (Ore?). It was a huge rip off and took a lot of time away from the tour. It was my fault - Gilles showed me the menu but I just saw a sandwich that I knew my granddaughter would eat and didn’t even look at the rest. There is no way to get a single course meal there, it is crazy expensive for what you get, and it takes a very long time. Had that been pointed out I definitely would have chosen something else. It meant we had to rush through the Grand Trianon and the Queen’s Hamlet and even rushing we were 30 minutes late to get back to the driver. It was a combination of having late entry tickets and the long lunch. I also wished I knew how much we were missing coming this time of year. Not only were the fountains not operating but most of the statues outside were covered. There were also areas in the palace that we didn’t have tickets for. I guess I thought that for so much money that we had access to everything. And at the end of the long day the tour operator decided to save some money and hire a small car rather than the minivan we were promised. We did not receive a refund for the difference in cost.
Great tour, excellent transport and Jean Paul was great! :) The Petit Trianon was absolutely beautiful and the walk along the grounds. :)
