La Basilique de Santa Rita da Cascia est une basilique mineure de Cascia, appartenant au sanctuaire homonyme. La dépouille mortelle de Sainte Rita est vénérée à l'intérieur. Rita de Cascia, née Margherita Lotti (Roccaporena, 1381 - Cascia, 22 mai 1457), était une religieuse italienne du monastère érémitique de Santa Maria Maddalena, béatifiée par le pape Urbain VIII en 1628 et proclamée sainte par le pape Léon XIII en 1900.) Dans les premières décennies du XXe siècle, l'augmentation constante du nombre de pèlerins visitant le reliquaire avec les restes de Sainte Rita a rendu l'ancienne église inadaptée à l'accueil d'un si grand nombre de personnes. C'est ainsi que Mère Maria Teresa Fasce, aujourd'hui bienheureuse, abbesse du monastère voisin de Santa Rita da Cascia où Sainte Rita avait vécu pendant plus de quarante ans, a promu la construction d'une nouvelle église adaptée aux besoins des fidèles.
Roccaporena est une fraction de la municipalité de Cascia, dans la province de Pérouse. Le village est situé à 707 m d'altitude, au fond d'une petite gorge, à environ 6 km de Cascia. Selon les données du recensement Istat 2001, il est habité par 73 habitants. La ville existe depuis le Moyen Âge, lorsque, en 1381, Santa Rita da Cascia y est née. En 1939, l'Opéra de Santa Rita a été fondé, pour promouvoir le culte du Saint, soigner et faire connaître ses souvenirs à Roccaporena, et faire des œuvres caritatives à son exemple en créant un orphelinat. Le nouveau sanctuaire a été conçu par l'architecte Oreste della Piana. L'entrée est ornée d'un portique ; l'intérieur a trois nefs, l'abside, et les murs sont ornés de mosaïques. Dans deux chapelles latérales, six verrières peintes et multicolores réalisées en 1966 par l'artiste milanaise Amalia Panigati. Dans l'église, il y a aussi le manteau de cuir qui, selon la tradition, appartenait à Rita.

My parents and I were traveling to Rome for the Jubilee year, and given my mom’s name is Rita, a trip to St. Rita was on the list. I chose this private tour with Alessandro because I wanted to make it extra special for my mom. Alessandro was really accommodating, letting me sit in the front of the car so I don’t get car sick, and making multiple stops for my parents for their espresso needs, which was necessary as you drive through the peaceful lush mountains. My mother laughed and cried a lot during this trip, which are both good signs, indicating the pleasure of the company and how significant this trip was for her life and spiritual journey. Alessandro was such a knowledgeable guide, but to call him just a “guide” or “driver” would not give proper justice to him as a person. Alessandro is a kind man, so good with people, and he quickly grew to be a new family friend. I can’t imagine a trip to Rome in the future without seeing him! I’ll be signing up for another trip with Alessandro without a doubt. Sign up with him and don’t think twice. :)

We had a very positive and spiritually uplifting experience on that Day Trip to Cascia, Santa Rita and Roccaporena . Everything was timed perfectly. We arrived in time for the mass which we really wanted to attend while at the shrine. We were able to join the guided tour of the monastery, visit the superior and inferior basilica and the Eucharistic Miracle. We were able to pray before the incorrupt body of St. Rita. A nun who was inside the shrine was giving prayer cards and rose petals which we were able to receive. The trip was very well organized. The drive to Cascia was scenic. We drove past picturesque and charming villages. Beautiful!!! Alessandro, our driver and guide was very professional, knowledgeable, courteous and accommodating. The limousine was clean, comfortable and driving was very relaxing. We had a relaxing time on our way back to Rome. Alessandro saw us sleeping😊. Water was provided on the trip and also a pamphlet to read about the places we were to visit. It rained part of the day and Alessandro offered us an umbrella to use when we went up the hill to the Garden of Miracles. Thank you so much Alessandro for your great service! We will definitely recommend this tour to friends and relatives and to anyone who has a devotion to St. Rita and to those who would like to visit Cascia and Roccaporena.
Alessandro was an awesome tour guide! He drove us from Rome to Cascia and drove us to the very front so we wouldn’t have to walk far. He taught us about all the important sites for St.Rita. Would definitely recommend doing this tour!
