Léonidas était un roi de la cité-État grecque de Sparte, et le 17e de la lignée des Agiades, une dynastie qui prétendait descendre du demi-dieu mythologique Héraclès et Cadmus. Léonidas était fils du roi Anaxandridas II. Il succède à son demi-frère le roi Cléomène Ier sur le trône en 489 av. Léonidas a eu une participation notable à la seconde guerre perse, où il a conduit les forces grecques alliées à un dernier stand à la bataille des Thermopyles (480 av. J.-C.) tout en tentant de défendre le col de l'armée d'invasion perse; il est mort à la bataille et est entré dans le mythe comme le chef des 300 Spartiates. Alors que les Grecs ont perdu cette bataille, ils ont pu expulser les envahisseurs perses dans l'année suivante.
À côté du monument de Léonidas, dans les Thermopyles historiques, se trouve le musée novateur de la municipalité de Lamia, consacré à la bataille de 480 avant J.-C. qui a changé le cours de l'histoire grecque. Projet scientifique de la Fondation du monde hellénique, le Centre d'Information Historique des Thermopyles a ouvert ses portes au public en 2010. Le bâtiment, en forme d'ancien fer de lance tourné vers le nord comme face aux envahisseurs, se caractérise par son design ergonomique qui s'applique aux fins muséologiques les plus récentes et dispose de panneaux de verre qui laissent entrer beaucoup de lumière naturelle. Le Centre représente l'histoire comme un récit et un discours interactifs : Dans ses trois salles d'exposition - nommées Léonidas, Dienekès et Thermopyles - des applications multimédias offrent aux visiteurs un voyage virtuel à l'époque et sur les champs de bataille des guerres perses, comme le raconte l'historien antique Hérodote, tandis que la bataille même des Thermopyles prend vie dans un film numérique en 3D.
La bataille des Thermopyles menée en 480 av. J.-C. chez les Grecs et les Perses au même moment que la bataille navale d'Artemision a lieu. Début septembre, l'armée perse conduisit mon Xerxis jusqu'aux passages des Thermopyles. Les Grecs ont choisi cet endroit stratégique pour faire face à l'attaque perse. Xerxis a ordonné à Léonide, le chef de l'armée grecque de rendre son armurerie mais il a répondu 'Venez les chercher'. Deux jours consécutifs, les Grecs combattirent héroïquement. Le troisième jour, Efialtès trahit les Grecs, montrant aux Perses le passage pour arriver à l'arrière-plan des Grecs. Ainsi, l'armée perse encercle les Grecs. Léonide reste sur le site de la bataille avec 300 Spartiates, 700 Thespieis et 400 Thivaious, fidèles aux lois de sa patrie. Il est mort des flèches persanes.
Kamena Vourla est une ville balnéaire près d'Athènes. Son paysage verdoyant et ses belles plages vous enchanteront. Vous y trouverez également plusieurs restaurants et cafés.
Les thermes des Thermopyles sont situés à 15 km. de la ville de Lamia. La région est connue par la bataille des Thermopyles entre les Grecs et les Perses en 480 av. À côté de la route se trouve la statue de Léonidas et la colline sacrée, où Léonidas est tombé en combattant avec les 300 Spartiates et les 700 Thespiens. Selon la mythologie, Héphaïstos, à la demande de la déesse Athéna, aurait créé les sources afin qu'Hercule puisse se laver et reprendre des forces après ses travaux.

Great experience with our guide, Nikos. He was very knowledgeable and personable. The Thermopylae site is undergoing improvements but completely accessible and apparently easier to navigate than in the past. The experience was incredible and honestly surreal. The museum admission was very affordable, and the trip itself was exactly the right length. The atmosphere there was amazing — you could really feel the history around you. My guide made it even better with how knowledgeable he was about Thermopylae and Greek history overall, while also being super friendly and accommodating. A great experience for those interested on military history. There were two of us in the group and th driver engaged with us sharing his knowledge about Thermopyle and the battles that preceded and followed it. He also described points of interest along the way. The museum is small and fee, which wasn't included was 3 Euros, so no issue, but have the correct amount ready. The lunch stop was a great spot, with amazing views of the Aegean and nearby islands. Excellent for enthusiasts.

It's difficult to review this fairly. Our driver was pleasant, friendly and helpful, and an excellent, safe driver. However, Thermopylae itself is not a good day out. The 'museum' has almost nothing in it bar a 3D film explaining the battle quite well - for an extra EU3 each! The two monuments are impressive, but other than that, there is nothing to see at the battlefield site. The hot springs 'spa' is just a hydrothermal spring and waterfall. As it was the middle of winter we did not bring our swimming gear, but there was plenty of time had we wanted to sit in the hot sulphurous water
