Goðafoss, la « cascade des dieux », est l’une des cascades les plus époustouflantes d’Islande et un véritable point culminant du Nord. Sa forme large en fer à cheval et son débit puissant créent une première Impression inoubliable. Selon la légende, c'est là que le législateur Þorgeir a jeté des idoles païennes dans la cascade après que l'Islande a adopté le christianisme il y a plus de 1000 ans. L'eau s'écoule du Vatnajökull, le plus grand glacier d'Islande, et selon la lumière, elle passe du bleu profond aux tons glaciaires laiteux. Par beau temps, un bel arc-en-ciel apparaît souvent au-dessus des chutes. C'est un endroit qui se sent à la fois puissant et paisible - parfait pour des photos inoubliables et un moment pour tout simplement prendre.
Un endroit vraiment unique à l'échelle mondiale - des pseudocratères comme ceux-ci existent dans seulement quelques endroits dans le monde : ici dans le nord de l'Islande, à Hawaii, et même sur Mars. Ils se sont formés lorsque la lave chaude s'est écoulée dans le lac, emprisonnant l'eau sous la surface. Lorsque l'eau s'est rapidement transformée en vapeur, la pression s'est accumulée jusqu'à ce qu'elle explose à travers le sol, créant ces formations en forme de cratère parfaitement formés. Contrairement aux véritables cratères volcaniques, ils n'ont pas été formés par une éruption par le bas, mais par de puissantes explosions de vapeur - ce qui en fait un phénomène géologique rare et fascinant. Aujourd'hui, ce quartier est calme et presque surréaliste, avec une vue dégagée sur le lac Mývatn. C'est l'endroit idéal pour une courte promenade, pour admirer le paysage et pour vivre un moment de calme dans l'un des environnements les plus insolites d'Islande.
Dimmuborgir, connue sous le nom de « forteresse obscure », est l’un des endroits les plus magiques et mystérieux d’Islande. Ce vaste champ de lave est rempli de formations rocheuses dramatiques qui se sentent presque irréelles - en partie conte de fées, en partie paysage d'un autre monde. Selon les légendes islandaises, c'est ici que se trouvent les trolls et les fameux Yule Lads - personnages de Noël malicieux profondément ancrés dans le folklore local. En marchant dans la région, le paysage commence à jouer avec votre imagination. Vous pouvez commencer à voir des formes dans les rochers - visages de trolls, créatures, animaux ou figures cachées - chaque formation racontant sa propre histoire silencieuse. C'est un endroit qui vous invite à ralentir, explorer et regarder de plus près. Un environnement calme, presque magique où la créativité s'éveille et où chaque pas révèle quelque chose de nouveau.
Grjótagjá est une petite grotte de lave qui cache l'un des sites les plus inattendus du nord de l'Islande - et entrer à l'intérieur est une expérience en soi. De l'extérieur, il semble simple et facile à manquer. Mais une fois entré, vous découvrez une grotte étroite remplie d'une eau géothermale intensément bleue et fumante qui contraste magnifiquement avec la roche volcanique sombre. Les couleurs sont presque irréelles. Juste à l'extérieur de la grotte, le paysage s'ouvre pour révéler des fissures tectoniques visibles - un endroit où vous pouvez vous tenir entre les plaques nord-américaine et eurasienne et voir la Terre se séparer lentement. C'est un arrêt court, mais qui se sent étonnamment puissant - un endroit caché qui reste dans votre mémoire longtemps après la fin de la visite.
Hverir est l'un des endroits les plus bruts et les plus étrangers du nord de l'Islande - un paysage qui se sent plus proche d'une autre planète que de tout ce qui est familier. Souvent comparé à Mars, c'est l'une des étapes visuellement les plus marquantes de la tournée. Le sol est vivant. La vapeur s'élève de la terre, évacue les sifflements et d'épaisses bulles de boue dans les tons jaune, brun et rouge profond. Les couleurs sont intenses, les textures changent constamment, et toute la zone a l'impression d'être encore créée sous vos pieds. C'est un endroit qui engage tous vos sens - vous pouvez voir, entendre et même sentir l'énergie de la terre. La forte odeur de soufre fait partie de l'expérience, rappelant qu'il ne s'agit pas seulement d'un paysage, mais d'une zone géothermique active. Il est sauvage, puissant et inoubliable - un véritable aperçu des forces qui façonnent l'Islande.
Earth Lagoon (Mývatn Nature Baths) est plus qu'un simple bain géothermique - c'est un moment où vous vous sentez vraiment l'Islande. L'eau provient de profondeurs souterraines, à environ 2,5 kilomètres sous la surface, et est riche en minéraux connus pour leurs effets apaisants et réparateurs sur le corps et la peau. Sa couleur bleu laiteux crée un contraste saisissant avec le paysage brut et ouvert du nord de l'Islande. Lorsque vous entrez dans l'eau chaude, entouré de vapeur montante et d'espace calme, tout ralentit. Le silence, la chaleur et le vaste environnement créent un sentiment à la fois apaisant et profondément ancré. Beaucoup de gens partent plus légers, plus calmes, et parfois même un peu renouvelés. C'est le moyen idéal de terminer la journée - non pas en faisant plus, mais simplement en étant présent dans le moment présent.
Sur le chemin du retour à Akureyri, vous pourrez vous détendre et profiter des paysages en constante évolution du nord de l'Islande - grands espaces, vallées calmes et le sentiment d'être loin de tout.

We actually did not get to do this particular tour as Viator double booked our tour guide with two different groups on two different tours on the same day. We opted to join her other group on the Diamond Circle Tour and are so glad we did. First stop was Gooafoss, a beautiful waterfall similar to Niagara Falls. Next stop was a quick stop at a quaint harbour town. Then, my favorite, a viewpoint where we saw hundreds of puffins. Next stop was Iceland’s only natural forest where we took a short hike to a beautiful canyon and lake. Then it was on to Dettifoss, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. Our last stop was at the Hverir Geothermal Area where We felt like we were on Mars! We saw so much in one day, we even had a few extra stops including one at the tetonic plates. Small group tours are so much better than big bus tours. Besides being able to see more, they can be personalized a bit. And Joanna, with Viltour Tours, was a fantastic guide. She truly cared that each of her customers was satisfied with everything! If you are in Akureyri, I would definitely recommend booking a tour with her!!
Joanna was very timely and professional. She met our ship as soon as we docked and promptly put us in a comfortable van for our of five. She spent the next six or seven hours showing us the area and explaining northern Iceland's natural wonders. I would highly recommend tour.

This was an absolutely fantastic tour! Everything was perfectly organized, and the places we visited – Mývatn, Goðafoss, Grotagja, Nature Baths and Dimmuborgir – were truly breathtaking. The highlight, however, was our guide Joanna – incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and full of positive energy. An unforgettable trip to the wonderful Iceland with a great tour guide! I went to m first trip to Akureyri in the North of Iceland to see Aurora Borealis at the end of November - beginning of December 2025. No much luck there, I mean I saw the Northern lights but not as spectacular as I expected. Iceland is a fairy land with open spaces, clean air, beautiful landscapes, and adding to that an amazing tour guide like Joanna the trip is just unforgettable. Joanna is positive energetic knowledgeable and friendly and she is brightening everybody’s day. She showed me the stunning Godafoss (Waterfall of the Gods), almost all the key volcano sites in the Lake Mývatn area (at that time the blue lake was frozen), I visited the Christmas village, and of course the sightseeing travelling everywhere was just breathtaking. She is a great driver even with the snow and the ice on the roads and the winds I always felt safe and secure and she was stopping at every spot where she knows the pictures taken and video records show the best of this amazing land. She knows so much about history culture and beauty of the country and she always allows her tourists to enjoy the experience in various spots by themselves. The sky was changing all the time but the colours of the clouds and the sky with sometimes the sun coming out for a brief moment are just incredible. For me the most unexpected experience were the baths. Never in my life I wouldn’t have believed that I will immerse myself outdoors at -15℃ with snow and ice, in geothermal infinity pools with fjord views at Forest Lagoon, or Mývatn Nature Baths with mineral-rich, milky-blue waters, and natural steam baths. A unique experience! I will definitely go back to Akureyri and I whole heartily recommend Joanna as a tour guide if you want the best trip ever.
