From the start our driver was on time, pleasant and helpful. Our hiking guide Daivd truly loves his job. He took his time, Gabe many helpful times and provided historical information. We highly recommend this tour company!
I was very excited to be able to go on a hike on the volcano with a small group. The driver was prompt at the hotel and he drove around to collect other people booked for the hike. The hotel took care of the arrangements including the fee to get into the site. The drive there was scenic and interesting. Once we arrived we had time to visit the toilets and listen to a short chat about the volcanoes of the region. There were walking staffs available for hire and also horses for hire which were led up part of the way but none of our group wanted one so they went back down with the handler. We stopped occasionally to rest, and at the site where we rested some of the group tried their hand at toasting marshmallows. It was wonderfully atmospheric. The guide took care to take the sticks back with him. I was so pleased to have experienced Pacaya. The walk down was very enjoyable and the views brilliant. It was lovely to chat with other members of the group. The guide stopped to talk about various plants and it was much more relaxing than the walk up. My only issue was, in my opinion, the guide needed to remember that for the group members it may have been their first and only time walking at that altitude and they might need a slower pace.
Hi Penny, Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review! We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed your Pacaya Volcano adventure and that everything went smoothly from the hotel pickup to the organization of the tour. It’s wonderful to know you appreciated the scenic drive, the small-group atmosphere, and the opportunity to meet fellow travelers along the way. We’re especially happy that you enjoyed the unique moments on the volcano, from the marshmallow roasting experience to learning about the local plants and landscapes. Pacaya truly offers a fascinating combination of natural beauty, geology, and adventure, and it’s great to hear that the descent allowed you to fully take in the incredible views. We also sincerely appreciate your constructive feedback regarding the hiking pace. You make a very valid point. Many of our guests are experiencing both Pacaya and the altitude for the first time, and we always want everyone to feel comfortable and able to enjoy the journey at their own pace. We will certainly share your comments with our team as a reminder to be mindful of the different fitness levels and hiking experiences within each group. Thank you again for your kind words and valuable suggestions. We’re so glad you were able to experience Pacaya and create such memorable moments on the volcano!
Our driver picked us up on time and did a great job navigating city traffic to get us to the volcano. Our guide was there to meet us and we were on the trail quickly (as soon as we used the restrooms). Horses followed us up the first section of the trail, in case we needed to ride. (All 4 of us turned that opportunity down.) The trail is steep, rocky, sandy and slippery, but only about 2 km to the top. Much of the trail is shady. Our guide, Fausto, was patient with our need to rest (we are all 70+) and was able to answer questions about the geology and surroundings. Snacks were available near the top, but no restrooms. We made it to the top in 90 minutes, and took about 45 minutes to descend. There is a little souvenir shop at the top selling trinkets made of lava. It was a great morning in the mountains! If you go, use sunscreen and bring water and maybe some snacks.
Hi Mahrt, Thank you so much for your detailed and thoughtful review! We’re really happy to hear you had such a great day on Pacaya It’s wonderful to know everything went smoothly from the punctual pickup to getting on the trail quickly. You described the hike perfectly—it can be a bit challenging with the terrain, but incredibly rewarding, especially with those beautiful mountain views along the way. We’re especially glad to hear that Fausto took such great care of you. His patience, support, and knowledge about the geology truly make a difference, and it’s great to know he helped make the experience enjoyable and comfortable for your group. Thank you as well for sharing those helpful tips—bringing sunscreen, water, and snacks is definitely the way to go! We truly appreciate your recommendation and hope to have you back for more amazing adventures in Guatemala!
This was a great experience. My guide was friendly, and knowledgeable. The booking was easy, transportation was arranged. If you are in the area I would recommend it. You do not need to be an experienced hiker.
Hi Mike, Thank you so much for your great review! We’re really happy to hear you had such a positive experience It’s awesome to know that everything—from the easy booking process to the transportation and the guided hike—went smoothly for you. And we’re especially glad your guide made a great impression with their friendliness and knowledge. You’re absolutely right—Pacaya is a fantastic experience even for those who aren’t experienced hikers, and we love making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Thank you again for your recommendation—we’d love to have you back for more adventures in Guatemala!
All good! I was hoping to eat some pizza but it wasn’t possible/included in the tour as reservations are needed. The group was a good size (6-7 people) and it was all good and easy to walk at your own pace. 6 hours (from start to finish including travel) was a long time to go without proper food (minimal food available for purchase eg fruit and packet chips) so I’d recommend to bring your own snacks if you’d like something more. The driver we had was particularly friendly and nice to drop us at different requested locations.
Hi Kirstin, Thank you so much for your helpful and honest review—we really appreciate you sharing your experience We’d like to clarify for future travelers that the pizza experience is a different tour and does require a separate reservation, so it’s not included in the standard Pacaya hiking tour. We completely understand how that could be confusing, and your comment helps make that clearer. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed the group size and the flexibility to hike at your own pace—that’s exactly the kind of experience we aim to provide. Your note about bringing snacks is also very valuable. While there are small items available for purchase, we definitely recommend guests bring something more substantial, especially for longer outings like this. And it’s great to hear your driver made a positive impression—those little extra touches always make a difference! Thanks again for your feedback—it really helps us improve and better inform future travelers.
Easy pickup and enjoyed all the stops and views. The guide was super friendly and was so helpful and patient with travelers who got tired while hiking up the volcano
Hi Shalom, Thank you so much for your kind recommendation! We’re really happy to hear you enjoyed the experience from the smooth pickup to all the beautiful views along the way. It’s especially great to know that your guide made a positive impact. Being friendly, patient, and supportive—especially on a hike like Pacaya—is something we truly value, so your words mean a lot. We hope to have you back for more amazing adventures in Guatemala!
First let me say that the review is not five stars but that does not mean that it was not all that bad. David, the guide the signed to take me up the volcano was a very kind and helpful man. I told him at the beginning that I wanted to practice and improve my Spanish and he took time to help me with every single sentence. I've never had anyone help me that much I was very appreciative. He took the time to point out many things along the path, provide me history and interesting details throughout the trip. He took his time or went fast depending on how I felt. I would highly recommend asking for David. I did initially get frustrated after booking this trip because unlike the dozens of other Viator bookings I have made over the years, this booking agency sent no follow-up text messages emails or instructions. I reached out the day before asking for contact details because I wanted to know how to dress, return details, etc. Only by calling Viator tech support 30 minutes before pick up was I able to get them to get me in touch with the tour operator. In the end everything worked out but I think this tour operator Guar2do needs to improve on communication. I subtracted one star for this. Finally, part of my reason for getting this three stars instead of five is because I was looking for a very active and adventurous day. I know it cannot be helped but Guatemala has some of the worst traffic I have ever experienced. I ended up spending hours in a car to go only a short distance. And the volcano climb and activity was not as exciting as I had hoped for such an effort. I'm in good physical fitness and I found it quite simple to walk up a relatively short very Worn Path to a volcano that had relatively little going on. There was an area at the top where you can see some steam that comes from deep underground and they tell you you can cook marshmallows. I found this to be somewhat interesting but more of a cute thing for kids. Emotionless just get wet. Overall I did enjoy the trip, but I would recommend it to anyone else doing this adventure that you piggyback on something else like a tour of some sites in Guatemala City or through Antigua to make the long day of travel more worthwhile.
Thank you, Jon, for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review. We truly appreciate balanced feedback like yours, as it helps us improve and also set clearer expectations for future travelers. First of all, we’re delighted to hear about your experience with David. He is indeed a fantastic guide, and we’re glad he took the time to help you practice Spanish, adapt the pace to your comfort, and share history and details along the way. Your kind words about him will definitely be passed along. Regarding communication prior to the tour, thank you for pointing this out. We understand how important clear pre-tour information is, especially for experienced travelers. While everything ultimately worked out, we acknowledge that the lack of proactive contact caused unnecessary frustration, and this is an area we continue to work on improving. We also appreciate your honesty about the overall experience and expectations. Pacaya is an accessible active volcano, and while it offers unique geothermal features and scenic views, we understand that for very experienced or adventure-focused travelers, it may feel less intense than anticipated—especially when combined with heavy traffic conditions, which unfortunately can be unpredictable in Guatemala. Your suggestion to combine this experience with additional destinations is a very good one, and something we often recommend to travelers looking to make the most of a full day. Thank you again for sharing your perspective and for continuing to recommend David and the experience overall. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back and tailor a future adventure that better matches your travel style and expectations.
It is pretty steep so hiking boots, poles, and layers are recommend. Bring your own snacks. We had a good time.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Beth! We’re happy to hear you had a good time on the Pacaya hike. It really is a steep trail, so your tips about boots, poles, layers, and snacks are spot on — great advice for future travelers. We appreciate you joining the tour and hope to welcome you back for another adventure whenever you're in Guatemala again!
Very nice experience. The beautiful place. So are the very friendly people. Horses are available for raising and lowering
¡Muchas gracias, Valentina!
It was amazing! I really enjoyed the time and the view we had at the hole hiking experience. It doesn't get very cold, so a lite jacket with a short pance is totally fine :)
Thank you so much for your review! We're really happy to hear that you had an amazing time and enjoyed the views throughout the hike. Pacaya truly offers a special experience! Great tip about the weather — it’s true, a light jacket is usually all you need. We hope to have you back for more adventures in the future! 🌋
