Surnommé la huitième merveille du monde par les habitants, cet ancien palais et cette forteresse ont une grande importance archéologique et attirent des milliers de touristes chaque année. C'est probablement la destination touristique la plus visitée du Sri Lanka. Le plateau rocheux de Sigiriya, formé du magma d’un volcan éteint, est 200 mètres plus haut que la jungle environnante. Sa vue étonne les visiteurs avec l'harmonie unique entre la nature et l'imagination humaine. Le complexe de la forteresse comprend les vestiges d'un palais en ruine, entouré d'un vaste réseau de fortifications, de vastes jardins, d'étangs, de canaux, de ruelles et de fontaines. Les territoires environnants de Sigiriya ont été inhibés pendant plusieurs milliers d'années. Depuis le 3ème siècle avant JC, le plateau rocheux de Sigiriya a servi de monastère. Dans la seconde moitié du Ve siècle, le roi Kasyapa décida d'y construire une résidence royale. Après sa mort, Sigiriya redevint un monastère bouddhiste jusqu'au XIVe siècle, date à laquelle il fut abandonné. Il a été conçu sous la forme d'un énorme lion de pierre, dont les pieds ont survécu jusqu'à ce jour mais les parties supérieures du corps ont été détruites. Grâce à ce lion, le palais a été nommé Sigiriya. Le terme Sigiriya provient du mot Sihagri, c’est-à-dire Lion Rock. Sigiriya Sigiriya Fresco Peintures à coups de pinceau Le mur ouest de Sigiriya était presque entièrement recouvert de fresques créées sous le règne de Kasyapa. Dix-huit fresques ont survécu à ce jour Les fresques représentent des femmes nues et sont considérées soit comme les portraits des épouses et des concubines de Kasyapa, soit comme des prêtresses exécutant des rituels religieux. Malgré l'identité inconnue des femmes représentées dans les fresques, ces peintures anciennes uniques célèbrent la beauté féminine et ont une signification historique incroyable. Mur de miroir Sigiriya Mur de miroir Sigiriya Une des caractéristiques les plus frappantes de Sigiriya est son mur miroir. Autrefois, il était tellement poli que le roi pouvait y voir son reflet. Le mur du miroir est peint avec des inscriptions et des poèmes écrits par les visiteurs de Sigiriya. Les inscriptions les plus anciennes datent du 8ème siècle. Ces inscriptions prouvent que Sigiriya était une destination touristique il y a plus de mille ans. Aujourd'hui, la peinture sur le mur est strictement interdite.
Polonnaruwa était la deuxième capitale du Sri Lanka après la destruction d'Anuradhapura en 1993. Elle comprend, outre les monuments brahmaniques construits par les Cholas, les ruines monumentales de la fabuleuse cité-jardin créée par Parakramabahu I au XIIe siècle. Les rois ont gouverné les plaines centrales du Sri Lanka depuis Polonnaruwa il y a 800 ans, alors que c'était un centre commercial et religieux florissant. La gloire de cet âge se trouve dans les trésors archéologiques qui donnent encore une assez bonne idée de l'apparence de la ville à son apogée. Le parc archéologique est un plaisir à explorer, avec des centaines de structures anciennes - tombeaux et temples, statues et stupas - dans un noyau compact. Le quadrilatère à lui seul vaut le détour.

We had an amazing day driving around with Saman. He's awesome, took great photos of us, and was really attentive to everything we needed. We definitely couldn't have done all of these sites without him. And, man, he has a good eye for wildlife. Elephants, owls, and monkeys! We saw everything we wanted to and more.

Beautiful day: Saman is punctual, very friendly, drives carefully and takes the time to talk about his country. The day starts early but it is worth it, the sunrise over Sigiriya is breathtaking! On the way to Polonnaruwa, we had a tuktuk safari and saw some beautiful birds and even two elephants! Saman knows his area well and where to go and where to take photos. Since the old city is big, getting back there by motor allows to visit everything in less time, Saman brought us back to all the places to see. We returned to Dambulla well in time to take our taxi to the next stage. An unforgettable ride. Thank you Saman!!!

We had an exceptional day with Saman! He was very professional, friendly and welcoming! His English is very good and he was very helpful in explaining sites along the journey. The day trip included sight-seeing at both Pidurangala and Sigirya rocks and the Polonaruwa ancient city. He even very kindly dropped us off at the Golden Buddha and Rock Temple at the end of the tour in Dambulla. We hiked to see the sunrise when it is a bit cooler at Pidurangala rock-which was absolutely breathtaking! We hired a tour guide who came in the Tuk Tuk with us all, on recommendation from Saman at the Polonaruwa ancient city. Which was fantastic as well and highly recommended! Saman also went above and beyond to make our trip amazing. We even stopped and got out to see wild elephants and many other beautiful animals! We also arranged for onward transport to Habarana with Saman the next morning. He also took us to a herbal garden along the way which was very interesting. Absolutely wonderful trip and fantastic tuk tuk tour with Saman. Would highly recommend to anyone! Thank you so much! :)

A unique way of experiencing Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa on a tuk tuk was truly memorable. We had a great guide/driver in Saman who was friendly and helpdul. We even got to spot an elephant, kingfishers, a few exotic wildlife along the way. Totally worth it. Thabks Saman.

The tour with Saman from Dambulla to Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya was fantastic, certainly one of the best experiences of my Sri Lanka trip. Saman is a great guide and safe tuk tuk driver, but also a very pleasant conversation partner from whom I learned a lot about his country and culture. I had a great tour with Saman, he is super friendly, professional, on time - showed me the best sites in the short amount of time I had - really appreciated ! The Pindurangala rock and Sigirya views were amazing. Polonaruwa is also really worth a visit (try as early as possible as it gets quite hot). Dambulla was also an awesome place. Don't look anywhere else for your day tour!!!! Saman was amazing, the early start to climb Sigiriya is worth some lost sleep. Saman was amazing, a great guide and helpful. He gave us great insight into Polonnaruwa and the ancient history. Saman gave us a great tip for lunch and dinner in Dambulla which was grealty appreciated as we were strugglign to find things hidden in amongst all the shops. I'm in the military, like Saman's brother, so he happily pointed out a lot of military facilities and history with me, which was amazing. The final perfect touch from Saman, was urgently pulling over for us, when I spotted a Malbar Pied Hornbill (bird freaks) and was urgently trying to get my partners attention. This quick stop, helped us spot a pair of amazing birds and was a final perfect end to a awesome day.

Watching the morning sunrise from the top of Sigiriya was breathtaking. The day tour through Polonnaruwa was amazing and Samar was a great host.

Saman was great and very professional. His English is pretty good and he explained me a lot of things about his country and the sites we visites. He was patient and stop along the way so that I can take as many pictures as I want. It was a lovely experience on a human and professional level.
