Itinéraire
C'est l'un des monastères anciens et historiques d'Éthiopie, qui se trouve au nord-ouest d'Addis-Abeba. Le monastère a été fondé au XIIIe siècle par saint Tekle Haymanot, selon la tradition; il a médité dans une grotte pendant 29 ans. Le complexe du monastère se trouve sur une terrasse entre une falaise et les gorges de l'un des affluents de la rivière Abbay. Aucun des bâtiments originaux de Debre Libanos ne subsiste, bien que David Buxton soupçonnait « qu'il y ait encore des choses intéressantes à trouver parmi les falaises voisines ». Les bâtiments actuels comprennent l'église au-dessus de la tombe de Tekle Haymanot, que l'empereur Hailé Sélassié a ordonné la construction en 1961; une église de la Croix légèrement plus ancienne, où Buxton a été informé qu'un fragment de la Vraie Croix est conservé; et cinq écoles religieuses.

La vallée de Jemma et ses environs sont bien connus pour les visites d'observation d'oiseaux. La principale cible de l'observateur d'oiseaux est la Francolin de Harwood, une espèce endémique et à aire de répartition restreinte; Barbet à bandes, l’Oriole de la forêt à tête noire, l’étourneau à bec blanc, l’étourneau à bec rouge, le bavardier à ailes blanches, la mésange à dos blanc, le touraco à joues blanches et le calao de Hemprich. Vous verrez également l’un des mammifères endémiques d’Éthiopie, le gélada ou babouin au cœur saignant. (Dans la gorge, nous verrons une variété de vautours - des vautours affrontés de Lamergeyer, de Ruppell et de Lappet.)

This tour was the highlight of our trip! We felt extremely safe and comfortable. We started off at the monastery, then we saw the baboons. Then we saw the Portuguese bridge and waterfalls and had a delicious lunch with a beautiful view. It was a nice, relaxing way to get out of the city. Our guide Barch was great, he went above and beyond to give us a perfect day.
It was really cool to see the countryside and what things are like outside the city. Our guide Niko was excellent. He explained things to us as we drove to the destinations, and shared about Ethiopia. He even brought us to some places to shop for coffee after we got back to Addis. He took us to local places to eat and try the local beer/liquor which was really cool because we never would have done that ourselves. The church had so much history and was beautiful. A priest showed us around and took us through the museum. The Portuguese bridge was stunning. The waterfall and the views from the top were beautiful. I would definitely recommend!

Very fun experience! Outside of the initial cost, there was no admission fee to be had. It turned out to be an all day trip, which the listing said upfront. Our guide, Barch, and all the other guides were very friendly and hospitable. The monastery had a decent crowd since our tour was right before their Mass started, though inside did not have anyone else aside from the Monk guiding us. The weather was perfect for the rest of the trip as well; bright and sunny, perfect for our hike to see the baboons and the Portuguese Bridge. If you're interested in history and love hiking, it's a perfect tour for you!

I highly recommend this tour company for anyone planning to visit Ethiopia. The overall organization was highly professional, and my itinerary went perfectly smoothly. A special shoutout to my guide, Yihun, and my driver, Niko. They were an absolutely fantastic team and took excellent care of me from start to finish! Yihun is incredibly knowledgeable; he explained the deep and complex history of Ethiopia in a way that was both easy to understand and engaging. Niko is an excellent and careful driver, navigating the roads expertly while ensuring I was comfortable at all times. Had a great time! Amazing views and our guide Abe was great and very knowledgeable! The lunch was also delicious and had an amazing view. The only think I would have liked was to stop at Entoto to see the view on the way back.
Abi and Abe were wonderful guides to the monastery and the Portuguese bridge. They were friendly and welcoming, the ride was comfortable and they answered all our questions. The tour even includes added local guides who were knowledgeable and helpful. The lunch is at a lovely spot with an amazing view of the canyon. Just a note that it is a long drive - no fault to the guides - but if you’re not used to being in a car for long periods of time, this is a heads-up!

The staff was very nice and we had a good conversation about Ethiopian history with the tour guide. Also, it is a good opportunity to explore the rural area outside the capital in Ethiopia.
