When I booked the trip, it indicated it was in English. I received communications in English from the travel company and our driver arrived on time. Our driver, by the way, did not speak English. About 45 minutes into our ride to our destination, the van we were riding in broke down in a remote area that was adjacent to a dangerous road. We were told we’d have a new ride in 20 minutes. About 30 minutes later, a small Hyundai SUV arrived and we were told our new driver arrived. We were LATER told by another person in our group that spoke Spanish that the person that picked us up was not from the charter company but rather, a person from off the street. We were driven by stranger that drove like a lunatic. The whale watching boat tour was all in Spanish, but about 20 minutes into the tour, we were asked if we spoke English and the facilitator gave us some limited information in English. To sum it up - We eventually made it to our destination despite the random driver, we made the whale watching trip which was great despite sans English, and we were picked up after the tour. It all worked out but it was very unnerving. If the tour and the rides were only in Spanish, that’s fine, but be explicit about it.
This was a really enjoyable and rewarding trip. Alex, our driver, turned up promptly at 5:30 and we were in Samaná by 8:30. He took us for a little walk over the bridge across much of the mouth of the bay, then to join the whale watching boat tour. The tour itself was great - very well run, very safety conscious, and we actually saw whales(!) very close-by. Afterwards we went to Cayo Levantado. The public areas were swarming with tour groups, but we had several tables kept for our boat, lunch was good, and we had about 1.5 hours to relax on the beach with a cocktail. The return was uneventful. Very glad to have seen whales, and I will definitely use MamaJuana Travel for other tours next time I'm in the DR.
Unfortunately pretty disappointing. Our driver was lovely and we had a nice private transfer to Samana. However, the actual boat tour had issues. Several people on our boat were being loud and obnoxious the entire time, blasting music from a speaker, singing, making “whale noises”, shouting. The boat operators never once told them to quiet down. It was like we were on a party boat. We saw a few whales from afar, but they all kept their distance from our boat despite going very close to all the other boats, which were completely silent. We stayed out only 30 minutes after glimpsing the whales, not an hour as stated, and then went to the beach location (which was extremely crowded) for 4+ hours, much longer than expected. Between the loud and obnoxious other guests and very short time with the whales, it wasn’t worth driving 3 hours each way from Santo Domingo.
Dear Emily, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and we sincerely apologize that aspects of your experience did not meet expectations. We’re glad to hear your driver provided a pleasant transfer to Samaná, but we regret that the boat tour itself left you disappointed. Your concerns about disruptive behavior are deeply important to us. A peaceful environment is crucial for both guests and wildlife, and we apologize that our crew did not intervene appropriately. We will reinforce protocols to ensure respectful conduct is maintained during tours moving forward. Regarding the whale-watching duration, while we aim to allocate an hour for observation, encounters with wildlife are inherently unpredictable. Our crew prioritizes the safety of guests and the whales, and adjustments to timing or proximity are sometimes necessary to respect the animals’ natural behavior and ensure a responsible experience. While we understand this may have shortened the observation window, these decisions are made thoughtfully to protect all involved. We also acknowledge your feedback about the extended time at the beach and overcrowding. We strive to balance itinerary commitments with guest enjoyment and will review this structure to improve future tours. Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope to have the opportunity to provide you with a more fulfilling experience in the future. Warm regards,
I took the whale watching tour combined with Bacardi island with sunset Caribbean. I booked via Viator and had a great and personalized experience. I was picked up at my hotel in Boca chica, by a wonderful tour guide, Ibrahim. 3 hour drive to the harbor, pleasant breakfast at the hotel next to the marina. We boarded the catamaran with 100 of my newest friends from all over the world. Boat ride out into open ocean and 20’ surge. The tumultuous surge was amazing for prompting the whales to perform. Breaches all around the boat and school of dolphins to boot. Ibrahim stayed by my side for all activities and I felt like I had a body guard as well as new friend. Boat ride to Bacardi island was much easier on the way back, lunch was okay, typical souvenir market and beautiful beach to walk around. Back to the harbor and 3 hour ride back home. Even though it was a 14+ hour day it was throughly enjoyable and much of that was due to a great tour guide. Thanks for a great experience!!!

Wow! The whales were really putting on a show for us! And lunch at Bacardi Island? Perfect! MamaJuana arranged for Alex to pick us up and drop us off at our condo. Alex is an excellent driver! He provided little tidbits of information along the way. We arrived to our destination early so he took us out on the walking bridge nearby! Having someone there that spoke English to guide us, insuring we understood everything and even taking photos for us made this one extremely enjoyable experience!
Hi Judith_G, Thank you for your enthusiastic review! We’re thrilled the whales treated you to a spectacular show and that your time on Bacardi Island—complete with a perfect lunch—lived up to the magic of the day. Alex truly is a gem, and we’re delighted his attentiveness, from sharing local insights to that spontaneous stop at the walking bridge, added such memorable layers to your adventure. It’s wonderful to hear that having an English-speaking guide ensured clarity and comfort throughout your experience, and that Alex’s extra touches (like snapping photos!) made your journey even more special. We aim to turn excursions into stories worth retelling, and your words confirm we’re on the right track. We’d love to welcome you back for more whale tales, beach days, and surprises around every corner. Until then, keep chasing those unforgettable moments! Warm regards, The MamaJuana Travel Team
Excellent experience with a top notch guide who was fluent in both English and Spanish. We saw over a dozen whales and had a wonderful time on the island after--very good food for the luncheon and a great time on the beach after. We had people from 13 to 75 in our 3 generation family group and everyone had a top notch experience. The guide even suggested that we take motion sickness preventative medication and stopped at a pharmacy for us to do so. It was a good thing as the seas were quite rough on the day we went. Highly recommend this adventure of a lifetime!
Hi Dreamer15357994288, Thank you for sharing this glowing review of your multi-generational adventure! We’re thrilled your family—spanning ages 13 to 75—enjoyed every moment, from the awe-inspiring whale sightings to the delicious lunch and relaxing beach time on Bacardi Island. Our bilingual guide’s attentiveness, including the proactive suggestion for motion sickness prevention, reflects the care we take to ensure comfort and joy for guests of all ages. It’s heartwarming to hear that the whales put on such a spectacular show and that the day’s rough seas didn’t dampen the excitement. Your description of this as an “adventure of a lifetime” is the highest praise we could hope for! We’d be honored to welcome your family back for more unforgettable moments, whether under the waves or under the Caribbean sun. Thank you for trusting us to be part of your cherished memories! Warm regards, The MamaJuana Travel Team
Alex our driver was the best. His English was near perfect and he seemed to truly enjoy meeting new people. The whales were a bit shy on our voyage but we did see them and we were fairly close. At lunch we met more people and had lots of laughs. I would not recommend this style boat for small children under 3. Best seats were on top but sun screen would be mandatory.
Hi David_F, Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback! We’re thrilled to hear that Alex’s enthusiasm and professionalism enhanced your adventure—his passion for connecting with travelers truly shines through. While we wish the whales had been a bit more active during your voyage, we’re glad you still had memorable sightings and enjoyed the lively atmosphere at lunch with fellow explorers. Your practical tips about sunscreen, seating preferences, and boat suitability for young children are invaluable for future guests, and we’ll ensure these insights are highlighted in our pre-tour guidelines. We’re always refining our experiences to balance adventure with comfort, and feedback like yours helps us improve. It was a pleasure having you with us, and we’d love to welcome you back for another journey—hopefully with whales that put on a grander show next time! Warm regards, The Mama Juana Travel Team
