Description

This past weekend, we did the Historical Elora: A Self-Guided Cycle Tour, and overall, it was a great experience. For $14, the tour was reasonably priced, and the process of downloading it to your phone was simple. It allows you to follow along at your own pace, which was perfect for our first visit to Elora. We chose the bicycle option so that we could cover more ground. The tour estimated it would take around 2-4 hours, which was accurate for us. However, what it doesn't tell you is that there are no bike rentals in Elora, despite multiple businesses advertising rentals. We called three different companies, but none had bikes available. Since we couldn't rent bikes, we decided to walk the tour, thinking it would still be manageable. We started around 11 AM and spent the first 30 minutes in the park, where a bike wasn't necessary. But as the tour progressed into the downtown area and then out into the countryside, we quickly realized we were in for a challenge. About an hour in, we were already getting tired from all the walking. We called the tour guide, Andrew, and explained our situation. He kindly offered to rent us his and his wife's bikes, which were just 15 minutes away. Andrew was very accommodating, and for $30 each, we finally had bikes to continue the tour. Once we had the bikes, the tour took us through the scenic city, the Gorge, and the countryside. It was informative and gave great insight into Elora's history and how the city was built. However, be prepared—it’s quite a workout! My partner and I both work out regularly, and we found it challenging. Make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks because you'll need them. A big thanks to Andrew for saving the day by renting us bikes and helping make our experience more enjoyable. It was a great way to spend quality time outdoors with my husband. One note: the city and the Gorge have a strong odor—think dead animals and horse manure. If you're sensitive to smells, this might be something to consider. Overall, it was a fun, informative, and memorable experience despite the hiccups along the way!
