Les Thermopyles sont un endroit en Grèce où un étroit passage côtier existait dans l'Antiquité. Il tire son nom de ses sources chaudes de soufre. Dans la mythologie grecque, la Porte Chaude est l'une des entrées d'Hadès. Les Thermopyles sont le site d'une bataille entre les forces grecques et les forces d'invasion perses, commémorée par Simonide de Céos dans la célèbre épitaphe, "Allez dire aux Spartiates, étranger de passage, Qu'ici obéissant à leurs lois nous mentons." Les Thermopyles sont la seule route terrestre suffisamment grande pour supporter tout trafic important entre Lokris et Thessalie. Aller du nord au sud le long de la côte est de la péninsule balkanique nécessite l'utilisation du col, et ainsi Thermopyles a été le théâtre de plusieurs batailles.
La bataille des Thermopyles s'est déroulée entre une alliance de cités-États de la Grèce antique, dirigée par le roi Léonidas Ier de Sparte, et l'empire achéménide de Xerxès Ier. Elle s'est déroulée en 480 avant JC pendant trois jours, lors de la deuxième invasion perse. de Grèce. La bataille a eu lieu simultanément avec la bataille navale à Artemisium. Il s'est produit à l'étroit col côtier des Thermopyles ("Les Portes Chaudes") en août ou septembre 480 av. L'invasion perse était une réponse retardée à la défaite de la première invasion perse de la Grèce, qui s'était terminée par la victoire athénienne à la bataille de Marathon en 490 av. En 480 av. J.-C., Xerxès avait amassé une armée et une marine massives et entreprit de conquérir toute la Grèce. Le politicien et général athénien Thémistocle avait proposé que les Grecs alliés bloquent l'avancée de l'armée perse au col des Thermopyles, tout en bloquant simultanément la marine perse au détroit d'Artémisium.
Leonidas était un roi de la cité-état grecque de Sparte et le 17e de la lignée Agiad, une dynastie qui revendiquait la descendance du demi-dieu mythologique Héraclès et Cadmus. Léonidas était le fils du roi Anaxandridas II. Il a succédé à son demi-frère le roi Cléomène Ier sur le trône en c. 489 av. Léonidas a eu une participation notable à la Seconde Guerre perse , où il a mené les forces grecques alliées à un dernier combat à la bataille des Thermopyles (480 avant JC) tout en tentant de défendre le col de l'armée perse envahissante; il est mort à la bataille et est entré dans le mythe en tant que chef des 300 Spartiates. Alors que les Grecs ont perdu cette bataille, ils ont pu expulser les envahisseurs perses l'année suivante.
À côté du monument de Léonidas, dans les Thermopyles historiques, se trouve le musée innovant de la municipalité de Lamia, dédié à la bataille de 480 av. J.-C. qui a changé le cours de l'histoire grecque.

Une merveille architecturale intrigante nichée dans le site archéologique de Delphes. Tholos nous offre une fenêtre sur le monde antique et la riche tapisserie de croyances et de traditions. Le Tholos d'Athéna Pronaia est un bâtiment circulaire avec une conception architecturale distinctive, comportant un anneau de colonnes doriques entourant une chambre centrale. Construite au IVe siècle avant notre ère, cette structure unique servait de sanctuaire dédié à Athéna Pronaia, une variante de la déesse Athéna vénérée à Delphes.
Le musée archéologique de Delphes est l'un des principaux musées de Grèce et l'un des plus visités. Il est géré par le ministère grec de la Culture. Fondé en 1903, il a été réaménagé à plusieurs reprises et abrite les découvertes faites au sanctuaire panhellénique de Delphes, qui date de la période helladique tardive (mycénienne) jusqu'au début de l'ère byzantine. Organisé en quatorze salles sur deux niveaux, le musée présente principalement des statues, dont le célèbre Aurige de Delphes, des éléments architecturaux, comme la frise du Trésor de Siphnie, et des ex-voto dédiés au sanctuaire d'Apollon pythique, comme le Sphinx de Naxos. La surface d'exposition est de plus de 2270m2, tandis que les salles de stockage et de conservation (mosaïques, céramiques et métaux) occupent 558m2.
Le temple d'Apollon, dieu de la musique, de l'harmonie, de la lumière, de la guérison et des oracles occupait la position la plus importante et la plus proéminente du sanctuaire delphique panhellénique. L'édifice avec la colonnade partiellement restaurée visible aujourd'hui date du IVe siècle av. c'est le troisième temple construit au même endroit. Le célèbre oracle, la Pythie, opérait à l'intérieur du temple, l'emplacement choisi, selon une tradition, en raison d'un gouffre sacré sous le site émettant des vapeurs, qui étaient inhalées par la Pythie. Certains auteurs anciens affirment que la Pythie est alors entrée dans un état de délire et a poussé des cris inarticulés, qui ont ensuite été transformés en oracles équivoques par les prêtres. Cette interprétation est controversée et a été contestée par des érudits tels que Joseph Fontenrose et Lisa Maurizio, qui soutiennent que les sources anciennes représentent uniformément la Pythie parlant intelligiblement et donnant des prophéties de sa propre voix.

We used MyAthensTransfers for this tour and for airport pick up and drop off for our group. Each time, our driver was on time and professional. The day tour was informative. Delphi was awesome. The spot we went for lunch was beautiful and great. I will say that Thermopylae was really underwhelming. It consists of two statues. This has nothing to do with the tour, but just a spot that was kinda lost to history.

Our driver was excellent, it was a lot of driving in one day and really great to have someone to drive us in a spacious, clean and comfortable vehicle. For 4 of us, the price was only a little more than going on a coach tour, so this felt very good value for money and our driver arranged a table in a wonderful restaurant with epic views for us. It was a highlight of our holiday and the best food we ate in Greece! We did two private tours and two airport transfers with this company and the service & drivers were exceptional. Wow! What a great day! We have been on a lot of tours but this one was truly memorable. We wanted to see Thermopylae and Delphi while on this trip. But what made the trip was our guide, Notis. This tour requires a long car trip together there. The time passed quickly and enjoyably with us just chatting with Notis. Learning about Greek culture, history and other topics. It was like visiting with friends over coffee. Thermopylae has changed over the years but the museum had a great 3-D 12 minute film that answered most questions. The memorial was touching as the story of bravery and loyalty is a great one. Delphi was different. The museum there has the result of many years of excavation, making the site very real. The actual site requires a lot of uphill walking but many spots were awesome. Real History. To recap, Notis is my new Greek friend. I need to ask where else ha can take us. We will gladly go with him again.

Such a great day trip. It is a long day from Athens but worth the drive if interested in the history of the battle and Delphi. Temple of Apollo was the draw. The museum was basically empty and the 3D show was neat. Our driver was amazing and got us there fast and made the trip better. It was hot so be prepared with plenty of water and wear decent shoes up the trek to see the temple, theater and stadium. The Delphi Museum was wonderful and packed with such interesting points but as we were so overheated and tired from the archeological site, we did not take the time the museum deserved. It would have been helpful and more interesting to have a guide inside the archeological site as we did not so just read the various signs.

We had an amazing trip! Everything was really nice. We have visited Thermopylae and Delphi Museum and Arheological Site. On our way back we stop for a lunch which was amazing. We had an amazing time on this tour. Mike (Menelaus) was the best driver/guide. Mike reached out the night before to introduce himself and confirm pick-up time. The day of the tour, we wanted to skip one stop on the itinerary and instead stop at a shop on the way to purchase honey - Mike was very accommodating. He was a wealth of information, easy to chat with, and provided us with many recommendations for restaurants in Athens. He even thought our daughter might like to attend an outdoor movie near where we were staying, and looking up the information for us. If you've ever been to Athens, you know driving can be wild. This tour gave us the opportunity to see sites away from the city, without the stress of trying to get there on our own. Panos our driver was was engaging and informative. He told us so much history, and pointed out notable sites along the way. We left early in the morning and arrived at Thermopylae before any other tourists, which was a pleasant surprise. Delphi is a must see. It could be challenging for some, but having the flexibility with the schedule kept the worry of "missing a bus" or not going fast enough, at bay. Our driver recommended an outstanding local taverna for lunch. Arachova was a delightful surprise. The vibe of the town is very unique, and it is incredibly picturesque. We recommend this tour 100%.
