Gangaramaya est l'un des plus anciens temples bouddhistes de Colombo. Il a été fondé à la fin du XIXe siècle par le célèbre moine érudit Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera. Après le Vénérable Sri Sumangala, son élève principal Devundera Sri Jinaratana Nayake Théra s'est chargé de l'administration du temple. C'est lui qui a jeté les bases de la transformation du petit temple en institut de comptabilité internationale. Le prochain chef sortant était le Ven. Devundara Keerthi Sri Sumangala Jinaratana Vacissara Théra, l'instructeur du Ven. Galboda Gnanissara, qui a œuvré pour faire du Gangaramaya ce qu’il est aujourd’hui: bien plus qu’un temple au sens classique du terme, mais un lieu de culte, un lieu d’apprentissage et un centre culturel.
Le bâtiment de style néo-baroque a été construit pendant l'ère coloniale britannique pour abriter le Conseil législatif de Ceylan et était une idée de Sir Henry McCallum. Cela a ensuite été inclus dans une proposition faite par un comité de construire le nouveau bâtiment du secrétariat, de la salle du Conseil et des bureaux du gouvernement sur un terrain remis en état situé à l'extrémité nord de Galle Face, approuvé par le gouvernement en 1920.
Galle Face est un parc urbain en bord de mer de 5 ha, qui s'étend sur 500 m le long de la côte, au cœur de Colombo, capitale financière et économique du Sri Lanka. Le gouverneur Sir Henry George Ward avait initialement aménagé la promenade en 1859, mais le Galle Face Green original s'étendait sur une zone beaucoup plus vaste que celle que nous connaissons aujourd'hui. Le Galle Face Green était initialement utilisé pour les courses de chevaux et comme terrain de golf, mais il était également utilisé pour le cricket, le polo, le football, le tennis et le rugby.
Le Independence Memorial Hall (également commémoratif de l’Independence Hall) est un monument national érigé au Sri Lanka pour commémorer l’indépendance du Sri Lanka de la domination britannique avec le rétablissement de la pleine responsabilité de son gouvernement devant une législature élue par les Ceylan situé dans Independence Square (anciennement Torrington Square) dans les Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo. Il abrite également le musée commémoratif de l'indépendance. Le monument a été construit à l'endroit où la cérémonie officielle marquant le début de l'autonomie a eu lieu, avec l'ouverture du premier parlement par SAR le prince Henry, duc de Gloucester, à un podium spécial le 4 février 1948. Située à la tête du monument se trouve la statue du premier Premier ministre du pays, Rt. L'hon. Don Stephen Senanayake "Le Père de la Nation". La plupart des célébrations annuelles de la fête nationale de l'indépendance ont eu lieu ici. En plus d’un monument, il a servi de salle de cérémonie au Sénat de Ceylan et à la Chambre des représentants de Ceylan jusqu’à ce que le Parlement soit transféré dans le nouveau complexe parlementaire. Actuellement, il accueille des événements religieux et des célébrations de la fête nationale annuelle.
Le musée de Colombo, comme on l'appelait à l'origine, a été créé le 1er janvier 1877. Il a été fondé par Sir William Henry Gregory, gouverneur britannique de Ceylan (Sri Lanka) à l'époque. La Royal Asiatic Society (CB) a joué un rôle déterminant dans la nomination de Gregory à son poste de gouverneur, en 1872, de la nécessité de créer un musée public, mais l'approbation du conseil législatif a été difficilement obtenue en un an. L'architecte du département des travaux publics, J.G. Smither a pu préparer les plans de la nouvelle structure sur le style architectural italien. La construction a été achevée en 1876 et le musée a commencé ses fonctions l'année suivante. Les autorités du musée ont pris diverses mesures pour afficher le patrimoine culturel et naturel du pays à cette fin. Avec le développement du musée au niveau international, il a acquis le statut de musée national pendant la période du Dr. P. P. Deraniyagala. Il a pu ouvrir des musées spécialisés à Jaffna, Kandy et Ratnapura. Un département à part entière des musées nationaux a été créé en 1942 en vertu de la loi n ° 31. L’extension du nombre de musées spécialisés est maintenant passée à neuf. un programme scientifique scolaire et un service de musée mobile sont également opérationnels.

La construction de la mosquée Jami-Ul-Alfar a débuté en 1908 et a été achevée en 1909. La mosquée a été commandée par la communauté musulmane indienne locale, basée à Pettah, afin de remplir les conditions de prière cinq fois par jour et de Jummah le vendredi. Le concepteur et le constructeur de la mosquée, Habibu Labbe Saibu Labbe (architecte non qualifié), était basé sur des détails / images de structures indo-saracéniques fournies par des commerçants de l'Inde du Sud, qui le commandaient. C'est un style d'architecture hybride, qui tire des éléments de l'architecture indienne, indo-islamique et indigène, et qui le combine avec les styles néo-gothique et néo-classique. À l'origine, il avait une capacité de 1 500 fidèles, alors qu'à l'époque environ 500 seulement assistaient à des prières. Il s’agit d’un bâtiment à deux étages distinctif rayé de rouge et de blanc, avec une tour de l’horloge, qui rappelle la mosquée Jamek de Kuala Lumpur en Malaisie (construite en 1910). Avant que d'autres sites aient été construits, certains affirment que la mosquée Jami Ul-Alfar a été reconnue comme l'emblème de Colombo par les marins s'approchant du port. En 1975, la mosquée, avec l'aide du Haji Omar Trust, a acheté un certain nombre de propriétés adjacentes et a commencé à construire un agrandissement de la mosquée afin de porter sa capacité à 10 000 personnes.

picture is beautiful but the street where it is main street very busy not to do with small children there are cars and a lot of tuk tuks driven and motorcycles you have to be very careful not to get hit

We rented a van for 6 people and had a wonderful day! Our guide Khan was so delightful! He was kind, polite, helpful, and knowledgeable . He took us to all the sites we wanted to see, and was with us every step of the way to help us or answer any questions we may have. The driver was great too and always made sure the motor and a/c were on when we got back into the van. Khan's wife had just had a baby 12 hours before our tour, and he shared a photo of his beautiful baby girl with us. It was a truly memorable day.
We booked a van for 6 people and toured the sites and did some shopping as well. Our guide Khan was wonderful! He was charming, polite, friendly, and knowledgeable. He took us everywhere we wanted to go and stayed with us wherever we went to assist or answer any questions. The driver was great too. Whenever we came back to the van, he had already started it up so the a/c was flowing for our comfort. Khan's wife had just had a baby 12 hours earlier and he shared with us a photo of his beautiful little baby girl. He was a delight ,as was our entire day.

Really enjoyed our tour with Ferose who was an excellent guide. Saw a lot of Colombo in 3-4 hours and found it fascinating. A real mix of old and new.

2 Sisters, cruise ship delayed by hours and nothing stopped our guide Answer from meeting us as arranged, with a beaming smile and welcome, and an air-conditioned mini van for the 2 of us.. no crammed in taxis or tuktuks for us We set off for a slightly modified tour due to the ships changes, on a fun, laughter packed sightseeing afternoon. The sights were fab, assistance thoughtful and the best he could. Sometimes the language barrier got in the way but when I adjusted my fast Australian speech things were much better. We would recommend Kingfisher tours to any solo, group, family or couple.. Thanks

As I’m travelling solo and doing only a 20hrs connection in Sri Lanka, I had no time to waste, so I booked a guide from Kingfisher tours and they sent Ferose Masse to look after me. Ferose was extremely friendly and helpful, no words can describe how much he helped me throughout the entire day! First off, he picked me up at the airport 2 hrs prior the time we had arranged because my flight arrived early, drove me to a breakfast place, and as I had forgotten to take cash out, he lended me cash to spend during the day. From the breakky shop we went on to the Spice Garden experience, which is very nice, I learned a lot about what plants, herbs and natural medicine can do, after the quick tour around the plants we headed to the Elephant activity point, were I was able, for the first time ever, to see, wash, take photos etc of an elephant, what a magical moment!! Then we had lunch, which was provided by the company, the restaurant was very nice and lunch was plenty of options, all with extremely large portions! For last but no least, he drove me to Sigiriyu rock fortress, where I was able to experience one of the most amazing places I’ve ever seen! After spending the entire day driving me around (lots and lots of driving), telling me about the culture, food, being very nice and friendly, Ferose dropped me off at the airport. I highly recommend Kingfisher tours, not only the driver spoke english, but the car was nice and tidy, I will definitely come back. They made the most of my day here! Thank you, Ferose!
