Fantastic people who work there with a great aim for conservation and education. Thanks to Harry and Ash (I apologise if I got your names wrong) who lead the two tour/encounters I did. The Australian wildlife tour and the orangutan encounter. Plus all the other keepers I met across the day. Much appreciation to them and their work and the beautiful, adorable animals, and their grounds 🤗 I will be back ❤️
Big spacious Zoo, perfect for kids. Great abundance of different types of animals, gread addittion to our trip. Did not get to see every anmial we wanted, but that is okay :)
Had an amazing experience at Melbourne Zoo and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city or even locals looking for a great day out. The zoo is beautifully maintained, with spacious, thoughtfully designed enclosures that prioritize animal welfare while still offering great visibility for visitors. There’s an incredible variety of animals—from majestic lions and playful elephants to the adorable meerkats and native Australian species like kangaroos and koalas. The Butterfly House was a particular highlight—stepping inside felt like entering a tropical paradise. What really stood out was the zoo's strong focus on conservation and education. Informational displays and interactive exhibits throughout the park made the experience not only fun but meaningful. Staff and volunteers were knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about the animals and their habitats. The grounds are clean and easy to navigate, with plenty of shaded areas, rest spots, and family-friendly facilities. There are also several great food options, including healthy choices and kid-friendly meals.
This was an excellent event. We were able to see the animals up close, and the keepers were so knowledgeable. It was a free day for volunteers, so they joined in the group. This made our day even more enjoyable; they were very personable.
Delightful day out with kids as they would love the 250 wildlife species to see. Enjoy lunch at a cafe. Wear comfy shoes!!
My sister and I went last night we had Ariel and Cate as our guides they were amazing and made the whole experience so memorable. We had a night walk where we saw the lions up and about, then this morning went into the elephant enclosure and hid food for them such a fantastic experience all round. Lovely food and great atmosphere in camp . Thank you both for making it a night we will never ever forget.
Awesome place, highly recommended. Animals are looked after and don't seem bothered by visitors. Beautiful experience
The tour starts at 8am (30mins prior you need to arrive) and the tickets stated the Rail gate entrance. 8 of us waited till 8:20am until Chris turned up (there are no phone numbers to call). The tickets apparently had the wrong gate specified. Chris made the tour work and is very enthusiastic in his job - excellent little bits of Info given. Chris organised for free coffees for the above muck up. Angie in the Kangaroo section was fantastic with the group too with some very interesting info given of the Kangaroos. No touching of the kangaroos allowed but the kangaroos can choose to interact. I would highly recommend this wildlife tour.
Been to the Melbourne zoo several times over my life time, and over that period there has been lots of improvements for both the viewing public and the most importantly the animals. My advice take a picnic lunch, catch the tram as there is a stop right outside the rear entrance. You will not have enough time to see everything so plan your day and enjoy. Also visit the Healsville sanctuary if you have time take a picnic lunch but you may need to take in tour or drive your self.
Our family only had 3 days in Melbourne. Not enough time to get out to see kangaroos or koalas in the wild. The early morning Wildlife Tour at the Melbourne Zoo was just the experience we were hoping for. So much gratitude for our guide, Jenny. She was welcoming, fun and had so much great information about all the animals we got to see and experience. The kangaroos, of course, were the highlight. We had far more contact and experience with them than I was expecting. Jenny was the perfect person to show us around. It felt like our beloved Aunt Jenny snuck us into the zoo before opening hours and shared with us the job and place she loves. 'roos, emus, platypus, wild dogs, Taz devils, incredible birds. These are just some of the amazing creatures we got to experience. I also appreciated that the experience didn't feel rushed. We got just what we were hoping for and more. Much gratitude to Jenny, the zoo and all the wonderful animals. *One tip: Much like an earlier reviewer, we had trouble finding where we were supposed to meet up. "Back Gate" of the zoo doesn't mean anything to an Uber driver and there doesn't appear to be any signage for "Back Gate." Once Jenny reached out and told us to go to the Royal Gate train station, then we could find our way. So future visitors--head to Royal Gate train station. You'll be just meters away.
