Although the weather was very hot there are places to go to cool down. The animals are well cared for with plenty of space. If you want information or directions there are plenty of staff to help. Had a fantastic day. To get from the tube station there is a bus you can get drops near the zoo.
What a brilliant experience. We had stayed in the lodge the night before which was also a great experience, so we were on site ready for the day. The excellent Joanna took us from breakfast to meet Rachel who was to be our host and guide. Rachel was fabulous from the off. There we just four of us and she kept us informed of all things about the zoo and what was going on as we walked to the tiger enclosure. After a safety briefing we spoke to Rachel about conservation and some of the awful trade in Tiger and other animals as well as medicines and traditional medicine. We then created some rather strong smelling paste using spices to put on the enrichment toys that we wouldlater see them play with in the enclosure. We then went behind the scenes to see the Tigers. The out of sight parts are immaculately kept, we had to go through a foot wash for our shoes as the animals welfare is paramount and that comes across in everything they were doing. There were two of the three Tigers inside. They were both in separate areas and eating. We were close but not enough to bother them, we all asked some questions and spoke while they ate which was really enlightening. We ran through another safely briefing as we were going to feed Geysha, the female tiger. We each took a turn to use the tongs with some meat to firstly feed her low down and then to make her stretch up which isn't for our benefit but hers. Then John and Re her keepers went through some training exercises and then she was let out. Then Asim the male came into that enclosure where John and Re went through some training exercises again with him and he was let out. We chatted more to John and Re then went outside to the enclosure where they had set up breakfast for Crispin the 3rd Tiger. When we were in place Rachel radio'd to John to let Crispin out who came for his breakfast in the tree which was unbelievable to see so close up. Would thoroughly recommend this experience. All 3 of John,Re and Rachel were so knowledgeable, so easy to talk to and really love what they do. The only thing I would say, but I understand why not, but you cant take photos in the behind the scenes area as it would have been nice to record that part but it wasnt an issue.
Lovely zoo with lots of different animals. Big park with lots of trees. We went during the heatwave so the animals weren’t very active which we expected and didn’t blame them! I don’t agree with some of the other reviews about the enclosures, most of them had plenty of space to get away from visitors and looked very well cared for. Nice restaurant as well which was nice and cool and not too busy at lunchtime
Excellent time, my child had asked for "feeding the Meerkats" for her birthday present. Lucy and Gary were brilliant, very knowledgeable and my child had a lovely time (as did I, because under 14 need an adult accompanying). The zoo itself is good, with some areas really good. The Butterfly Pavilion, the Reptiles and Amphibians, and the walk through of tropical birds are all standouts. Would also say that the food at the Terrace Restaurant is excellent, well priced, good ingredients.
It's a typical zoo, big, lots of various animals, animals seemed well looked after, lots to see and do, you can download an app to find out when the talks are on etc but we didn't bother, we arrived around 12, left at 4 due to other travel arrangements, we only missed out a few animals but didn't really give ourselves time to sit down mind which is needed- especially as it was a hot day! The food was typically fast food, pizza, hot dogs, fish coujons or chicken strips with chips, they did also have salad but who gets that! It was all lovely typical prices, we got 4 children's meals which was more than enough food 2 adults and 2 teenage daughters, costing about £40 with drinks. Ice creams we're typical prices, just over £10 for 4 ice creams. The gift shop again is what you would expect in a zoo, lovely gifts, lockers for luggage was great- we had 2 huge suitcases and 2 back packs, so we needed 2 lockers, we also bought gifts at the start so the shop was quiet, but I would have went later if I had known, if you feed the penguins, you get 10% discount off at the shop which I thought was a nice touch! I LOVED feeding the penguins, this was over priced but totally worth every penny! £15 for a cup full of sardine type fish, that you posted down the tubes but it was so much fun, and I would do it again in a heart best! Best animals to see: butterflies, pemguins, otters and squirrel monkeys, (known as in with the monkeys on the map) map was fine to read, plenty of water stations around and shade which we were pleased with as well as seats of you had time to sit down! All in all lovely day, we've seen better zoo's but still loved it! The staff were lovely and very helpful and friendly too.
Better than expected. Compact, but plenty to see. Animal habitats were generally spacious and well maintained. The gift shop and food options were the best I’ve ever seen at a zoo. Best of all, we were there on a warm and sunny June day (albeit midweek) and the zoo wasn’t the least bit crowded. Yes, it has pricey entry fee, especially for a family, but I’m happy to support the excellent conservation work of ZSL. Only disappointment for me was the magnificent Snowden Aviary—the monkeys were all indoors. Surely an aviary was a better use of this space?
Thank you for your wonderful review. We’re delighted to hear you and your family had such an enjoyable visit and that you appreciated the habitats, facilities, and atmosphere on the day! It’s also great to know you value our conservation work—it really does mean a lot. We hope to welcome you back again soon for another family day out!
Took a very quick trip to the London Zoo on a Saturday morning. I like to try to visit local zoos when I travel. It’s a lovely zoo and a great value. Set in an historic park, I was able to see a bit of the city that I otherwise was not planning to see. The animal habitats are well maintained and there were so many helpful volunteers. I only spent about an hour and a half but was able to see most of the zoo. It looked like there were a lot of good food and drink options. It was worth my time and if you like zoos this one is a gem.
Thank you for your wonderful review. We’re so pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit and found the zoo a great value, as well as easy to explore. It’s lovely to know you appreciated the setting in the park, our animal habitats, and the support from our volunteers—they’ll be delighted to hear your kind words. We’re glad you made the most of your time with us and hope to welcome you back on your next visit to London!
It was the most amazing day with memories I will treasure forever.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review. We’re delighted to hear that your visit felt so special and that it stood out from other zoo experiences. It’s lovely to know you created memories that will last a lifetime—we hope to welcome you back again soon!
Obviously an old zoo. Animals well looked after but I expected to see more of them. Often only one exhibit to see, quite a few empty cages. Sad no elephants. Best thing was the gorillas, good to see a few of these. Sign posting was poor. Not many staff around.
Thank you for your feedback. We’re pleased you enjoyed seeing the gorillas and felt the animals are well cared for. We’re sorry some areas of your visit didn’t meet expectations. We’re continuously improving the zoo, including signage and habitat developments. Some animals may not always be visible as they have access to private spaces for their welfare. We appreciate your comments and will share them with the team as we work to improve the visitor experience.
London Zoo is a fantastic zoo to start off. We are members so value for money tickets wise won’t be mentioned in this review. While it’s a shame the old aquarium and reptile house in the entrance are no more ; their modern equivalents more than make up for that particularly in favour of the reptiles. We started with the Capybaras which are always a personal favourite and we’re doing Capybara things what more can be said. Then we moved onto the Australia section which was by far the weakest area of the zoo and in bad need of upgrading/updating. Featured a very tired looking landscape with Wallabies and Emu’s/Rhea’s (Can’t wait remember which) and definitely needs a lick of paint adding to it. Moving round there’s the Gibbons which were great with one of them pulling an amusing facial expression for some reason. Then there’s Tigers which for lack of better words are all present and correct and the Tiger Territory as a whole is fantastic with many viewing opportunities for a popular attraction. Next, Camels which did feel a little out of place between the Tigers and farmyard area however not their fault and nothing wrong with that whatsoever. Farmyard is very similar to Whipsnade’s with many more domestic animals on show some of which were remarkably friendly. Next Porcupine’s which were asleep which is to be expected with them being nocturnal. Then Meerkats and Coati’s with the latter being a really nice addition and was quite fascinating to see it trotting about its enclosure. Next Land of the Lions which similar to Tiger Territory is very well turned out and full of viewing opportunities for another star attraction. However I would say the Asian Set Design doesn’t really work for me and does feel a little odd particularly when you leave the area and there’s a whole array of fake shops next to the Minibeast area which is bizarre. The Blackburn Pavillion is a paradise for fans of birds so many species and really well looked after seemingly with the clock outside being a nice period feature showing the Zoo’s history. We did hilariously get divebombed by a red bird here. Tiny Giants is a slight letdown as I remember it being a bit more diverse on previous visits however I might be wrong but is still a nice enough building with many minibeasts and fish in display. Walkthrough with Spiders is definitely not to my taste so we avoided that but that’s a personal preference thing. The Squirrel Monkeys just up the way were a bit timid at first and were hiding but credit to the staff they managed to coax them out and were very entertaining when food was given out to them. Penguin Beach was nice full of energetic Penguins which there seemed to be more of the more you looked. Butterfly Paradise was nice however could do with a more permanent building/structure similar to Whipsnade’s. Giants of the Galapagos and the new Reptile House are simply amazing habitats for all the creatures housed within and the reptile house has a very interesting mix of species including a King Cobra which was an exciting first for me. Then we headed through the Tunnel to the other side which is a hidden gem I think and definitely underrated. Mongooses and Otters were lovely and very cute as always. Rainforest and Night Life areas are simply amazing with Monkeys in the rainforest sections actually walking over your heads and the variety of species in here was stunning. I want to advocate that more zoos should have a night life section it’s a refreshing contrast to the rainforest section which is bright and airy. The darkness takes a moment to get used too but is really cool afterwards and trying to spot all the creatures is good fun. The Africa section regarding the Zebra and Giraffe Houses needs an update too as the buildings look quite tired and the areas a touch baron. The Painted Dogs were very active surprisingly however I’m not convinced on the whole looking down on them aspect that comes with a few issues. The old Aviary on the very far side has been turned into a Monkey Valley. And this is a large improvement with all the Colobus Monkeys out and active and look like they’re loving their new space. We actually missed out the Gorilllas the first time as we thought they were closed. Turns out they were only partially closed for renovations so excited to see what comes of that. We did get to see them in the end and then it was time for the gift shop which had a fantastic selection if a bit pricey but nothing too extreme. Overall, London Zoo is a fantastic zoo which seamlessly transitions between old and new and while some areas do need a small update, most are fantastic and house spectacular animals clearly well looked after by their keepers. The Map however does need an update as it’s really unclear and not very representative of anything really
Thank you for such a detailed and thoughtful review. We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed so many areas of the Zoo, from Penguin Beach to the Rainforest and Night Life, and that the animals and their care stood out to you. We also really appreciate your helpful feedback on areas that could be improved, including the Australia section, Africa area and the map—this has been shared with the team as we continue to develop the Zoo. Thank you again for your continued support as members, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
