Situé en face du quartier Vila Olímpica, il a été construit en 1990 lors du réaménagement de ce quartier de Barcelone. La marina a été conçue par les architectes Oriol Bohigas, Josep Martorell, David Mackay et Albert Puigdomènech. La ville avait besoin d'un port de plaisance sportif répondant à des normes strictes, et elle a été le site des compétitions de voile lors des Jeux Olympiques de 1992. La marina dispose de 756 couchettes pour les yachts et son entrée est visible de n'importe où à Barcelone. Les deux gratte-ciel de chaque côté sont la tour Mapfre et l'hôtel Arts, avec la spectaculaire sculpture de poisson rouge de Frank Gehry à sa base, et à proximité, le Gran Casino de Barcelone. Les amateurs de sports nautiques peuvent y faire du yachting ou pratiquer d’autres types de techniques de navigation, et en été, les plages de chaque côté du port de plaisance – Somorrostro et Nova Icària – sont l’endroit idéal pour bronzer ou pour se rafraîchir en mer.
La sculpture Fish de l'architecte Frank Gehry, prix Pritzker en 1989, est devenue l'un des symboles de Barcelone post-olympique et semble flotter sur les eaux de la Méditerranée. La lumière du soleil se reflète dans les écailles de cette sculpture qui préside au front de mer de la marina olympique et des plages de Barcelone. En 1992, la Barcelone olympique immaculée transformait son front de mer. Une nouvelle marina olympique prenait forme, présidée par ses tours jumelles. D'un côté se dressait la tour Mapfre; de l'autre se trouvait l'hôtel Arts. Frank Gehry a placé sa sculpture de poisson au pied de l'hôtel. L'animal mesure 56 mètres de long et 35 mètres de haut et semble désirer sauter dans les eaux bleues de la Méditerranée.
Port Vell, littéralement en français « Vieux port » est un port de front de mer de Barcelone, en Catalogne, en Espagne, et faisant partie du port de Barcelone. Il a été construit dans le cadre d'un programme de rénovation urbaine avant les Jeux olympiques de Barcelone en 1992. Avant cela, c'était une zone délabrée d'entrepôts vides, de gares de triage et d'usines. 16 millions de personnes visitent le complexe chaque année C'est maintenant un point central de la ville et une attraction touristique, contenant le Maremàgnum (un centre commercial contenant des boutiques, un cinéma multiplexe, des bars et des restaurants), IMAX Port Vell et le plus grand aquarium d'Europe contenant 8000 poissons et 11 requins contenus dans 22 bassins remplis de six millions de litres (1,6 million de gallons américains) d'eau de mer. Une passerelle piétonne, Rambla de Mar, relie La Rambla à Port Vell Elle intègre un pont tournant, afin de permettre aux navires d'entrer et de sortir du port

What a great evening ! Our skipper Marie was so kind, knowledgeable and fun! She gave great info about Barcelona and the port area as well as sailing facts. Our musician, Arjun (sp?), was excellent on the saxophone. Marie sang for us while Arjun played. It was lovely! The weather, relaxed atmosphere and snacks/drinks were perfect. Highly recommend this adventure.
