La basilique Santa Maria degli Angeli est située à 4 km d'Assise. À l'intérieur de la basilique se trouve la chapelle Porziuncola ; le lieu le plus aimé de saint François et où Dieu lui a accordé des grâces particulières. Initialement, la Porziuncola était une ancienne chapelle, entourée d'une petite partie de forêt (d'où peut-être son nom) appartenant aux Bénédictins du monastère de S. Benedetto del Monte Subasio. Longtemps abandonnée, elle fut restaurée par Francesco qui la loua à l'abbé Teobaldo. Après la mort du Saint, quelques bâtiments permanents surgirent autour de l'église : le chœur des frères, divers petits oratoires puis un petit couvent. Dans la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle, Pie V ordonna la construction d'une grande basilique qui enfermerait et protégerait la Porziuncola et accueillerait les foules de pèlerins qui y affluaient continuellement.
La basilique Santa Chiara est un édifice religieux de style néo-roman situé à Assise. La basilique est parmi les plus célèbres d'Italie et l'une des plus belles d'Ombrie. L'église marque non seulement le centre historique de la ville mais aussi un lieu important d'un point de vue artistique et culturel. La Basilique de Santa Chiara a été construite par les moines bénédictins, qui avaient le désir d'honorer Santa Chiara, née Agnese en 1194 et décédée le 13 septembre 1253. Actuellement, avec la Porziuncola, l'Eremo delle Carceri, la Chiesa Nuova et la Basilique de San Damiano, la cathédrale de San Rufino et évidemment la basilique de San Francesco, est l'un des centres où se concentre le pèlerinage à Assise.
Splendide demeure baroque avec des voûtes décorées de fresques du début du XVIIe siècle par des peintres ombriens et toscans. C'est la Pinacothèque communale d'Assise, à l'intérieur se trouve un groupe remarquable de fresques médiévales et de la Renaissance.
La Basilique de San Francesco d'Assisi, lieu qui conserve la dépouille mortelle du saint séraphique depuis 1230, est l'un des lieux de culte les plus importants d'Italie et du monde. En 2000, la basilique a été inscrite sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO. La première pierre de la basilique Saint-François d'Assise a été posée le 16 juillet 1228, deux jours seulement après la mort de François et le lendemain de sa proclamation saint par le pape Grégoire IX. Selon la tradition, c'est François lui-même qui indiqua exactement l'endroit où il souhaitait être enterré. L'église représente l'une des pierres angulaires de la diffusion du gothique en Italie. En plus d'être le lieu de sépulture de saint François, il revêtait une importance fondamentale pour la papauté, qui considérait l'ordre franciscain comme un grand allié pour renforcer les liens avec les classes les plus humbles et les plus populaires. La construction de la basilique fut commencée en 1228 par le pape Grégoire IX puis consacrée en 1253 par le pape Innocent IV.

Le Dôme d'Orvieto est l'une des plus belles cathédrales italiennes, un chef-d'œuvre de l'architecture gothique du centre de l'Italie. Le magnifique bâtiment domine la falaise sur laquelle se trouve Orvieto grâce à sa taille. En particulier, la splendeur de sa façade est connue dans le monde entier, avec ses tours qui atteignent une hauteur d'environ 53 mètres. N'oubliez pas l'intérieur du Dôme, avec de magnifiques décorations et fresques réalisées par certains des plus grands peintres du passé, parmi lesquels le célèbre Giudizio Universale de Luca Signorelli.
Explorez Orvieto, l'une des plus anciennes villes d'Italie, doit ses origines à la civilisation étrusque : les premières colonies remontent au 9ème siècle avant JC. et ils se sont installés à l'intérieur des grottes tufacées créées dans le massif sur lequel se dresse actuellement la ville ombrienne. Bien que la renommée d'Orvieto soit profondément liée à celle de sa magnifique cathédrale, la ville offre de nombreuses idées et itinéraires historico-artistiques, précisément en raison de ses origines anciennes. De plus, perchée sur une falaise, Orvieto offre des vues panoramiques vraiment splendides.

Excellent! Tour assistant and driver were both very pleasant. On time departure. Beautiful drive. Tour guide Marco in Assisi was very thorough and excellent topic knowledge. Tour went long because he seemed to really enjoy what he does. Tour assistant pointed things out on the way, but also didn’t just talk at us the whole time. I cannot recommend the group at Welcome Italy enough for their day excursions. Cars are very clean and comfortable. We had paid for a small group tour but it ended up being only us which made the tour even more personal.

Welcome Italy was such a great way for my wife and I to experience a full trip in Rome. We actually had three separate excursions with them. First we went to Castel Gandolfo and Nemi. After a full three days in Rome, this was such a quiet and relaxing day. Antoinetta was so personable and made us feel at home, and our driver Pietro was great. The second day we traveled with Marie and Pino to Orvieto and Assisi. Again, both were professional and it felt like we were traveling with old friends by the end of the day. Our third day we traveled with Cascia and Spoleto. Another day of being immersed with a rich understanding of the history thanks to our guide, Juliana, and driver Flavio. Disclaimer here… my wife and I are Catholic, and from that perspective we felt so close to the history of the church. The guides did a great job of understanding that and catering to it each day. Their recommendations on restaurants while traveling were top notch as well. I cannot say enough good things about the days we spent with Welcome Italy and will absolutely be using their services on our next trip to Italy!
