I booked the Guided Climb of Carrauntoohil with KerryClimbing.ie via the Devils Ladder for my 16 year old son and I having been waiting for years for the right conditions and available time. I knew this would be a challenge having researched some You Tube videos and gone through the Kerry Climbing website in lots of detail. Their booking process was easy and Catherine was immediately available and after some routine form filling we were confirmed on the guided tour. Instructions were clear and easy to follow. Time allowed for the ascent and decent were very accurate and their description of the climb as ‘difficult’ was also accurate. Set off time with our guide was on schedule and we had 12 in our group. On our particular day the mountain was very busy and we estimated maybe up to 1,000 people were on the mountain all day. The climb itself was tiring and I should have brought closer to 3 litres rather than the 1 litre of water I had. Also a few more snacks would have been welcome but both these items were down to me under estimating what I would need. All recommendations for footwear / clothing / food and water are well set out on the website and email communications. The descent was harder than the ascent due to the loose under foot stone conditions and the sheer number of people on the mountain was also a factor. It took us 7.5 hours from start to finish. Be under no illusion, we had wonderful conditions but this was still the hardest thing I ever put myself through and I would be regarded as very active. But the thrill of completing it outweighs all the soreness that followed in the couple of days after. Well worth the fee as the guide will provide you with lots of interesting facts and details during the many rest breaks throughout. I am very impressed with Kerry Climbing and our guide John Guerin was a gentleman and really added to the adventure. No pain no gain. An amazing full day which we will always remember with pride.
Fantastic climb with a great guide Piaras. Would highly recommend.
Fantastic experience. Felt so much safer having a guide with us for the climb. Had 2 teenagers as part of our family group and the guide was fantastic with them. Would definitely recommend Pierce.
A very enjoyable hike with a really experienced guide who took his time with the group.
Hi Catherine, Delighted to write a review for Kerry Climbing. On 6th June 2026, 12 members of staff from our Civils Division recently took on the Munro Challenge for our charity Water-Aid. The challenge required the climb to more than 1000m therefore Carrauntoohil was chosen. From experienced hikers to complete novices, we knew we were in good hands being guided every step of the way by John and what an experience it was! John was extremely professional, knowledgeable gentleman regarding everything about the area and the route was carefully planned out. Reaching the summit was a special moment for the team with testing weather conditions, getting four seasons in one day. On the descent the weather went in our favour and it awarded us some of the most spectacular views I have ever witnessed, Kerry in stunning! I would highly recommend this guided climb for anyone that likes a challenge together with a safe, rewarding experience. Thank you for a fantastic day in the Mountains..
A really enjoyable hike of Mount Brandon. Piaras, our guide was outstanding. Despite the horrendous weather with heavy rain we had a great day out. He was very helpful and we felt safe. He had very interesting stories and historical information about the area. I would 100% recommend Kerry climbing for any hikes. We also did Carrauntoohil. With KerryClimbing. Looking forward to the next one.
This was a fantastic day's walking. The booking (some months in advance) was easy and the price was very reasonable. On the day, there was a group of 9 of us and we all got on well and walked together. The route and its difficulty was as described so there were no shocks. Not to say a few gasps of fright when I saw the ridge we had to scramble over. But we were very well guided with much encouragement and advice of where to step or hold. We had flown over from the UK for this - so it was a bigger investment of time and money than many might put in - but it was 100% worth it. I'm already planning my next trip back with Kerry Climbing. PS - they gave us fantastic weather - all at not extra cost! Thank you!
