L'histoire du Taj Mahal est centrée sur une grande histoire d'amour et de perte : l'empereur moghol Shah Jahan l'a commandé en 1631 pour en faire un magnifique mausolée pour son épouse bien-aimée, Mumtaz Mahal, morte en donnant naissance à leur 14e enfant. Construit en marbre blanc et incrusté de pierres précieuses, le complexe a pris environ 22 ans (achevé ~1653) avec 20 000 artisans, devenant un sommet de l'architecture moghole et un site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO symbolisant l'amour éternel. L'histoire du fort d'Agra a commencé avant les Moghols, mais c'est l'empereur Akbar qui l'a reconstruit comme forteresse et capitale en grès rouge vers 1565 - 1573, transformant un fort en briques (Badalgarh) en une grande ville fortifiée et un centre militaire. Des successeurs comme Jahangir et Shah Jahan ont ajouté d'exquis palais, mosquées et salles en marbre blanc (Diwan-i-Khas). Il a servi de résidence moghole principale jusqu'en 1638, a assisté à des batailles, et est devenu célèbre la prison pour Shah Jahan, qui a observé le Taj Mahal du Musamman Burj jusqu'à sa mort, avant de tomber plus tard
