My experience with this agency was deeply disappointing. Our guide, Alan, was the worst I've ever had—he prioritized his own commercial goal of arriving first over our safety, treated group members unfairly, and ignored emergencies. We were constantly rushed to the Salkantay Pass without regard for individual paces, violating the basic group-trekking rule of sticking to the slowest member. As a result, I walked alone for most of the trek. The only exception was day three, when a Brazilian companion kindly stayed with me while I was injured—which made a huge difference. The ascent drained all my energy, and the descent became dangerous. The lunch provided lacked sufficient calories, and I stumbled down in a daze, smashing both big toes so hard that I lost both nails. From that point on, everything became much harder, yet I received zero assistance or support. I genuinely wish I had done this as a solo trek; at least I would have saved money and had more control over my own pace.
Guido worked extremely hard to make sure everyone had a great experience. We had multiple people who struggled with altitude in our group. Guido did everything in his power to make them comfortable and still have the best experience possible. I think I could speak for all 10 people in my group that we got very lucky having him as our guide!
Wow. What an experience! The organisation of the trip was excellent. A de-brief from our guide gave us plenty of insight to what was in stall, what we needed to bring and what the week would entail. A very detailed and concise check list, mapped out route and estimated schedule gave us full confidence going into the trek. The pick-up was on time the following morning to embark on our adventure and punctual throughout our experience. The accommodation exceeded all expectations - just remember to bring warm clothes and rent/bring a sleeping bag as the first night is quite chilly! Each location of the accommodation was special in its own way. The variety of views and scenery were spectacular. The accommodation was always clean, wifi was always available and common dining areas were hygienic. Meals throughout the week were delicious. There were plenty of options, dietary requirements were adhered to and they made sure you never went hungry! The chef and sous-chef did an excellent job of feeding and fuelling us at an international chef standard! Transportation of our belongings from our horseman through the mountains had never been so easy. Drop your bag off to him in the morning, and by the time you arrive at the next camp in the evening your belongings are there ready to simply be picked up. Never once did anything go missing, we had full trust in his hugely under appreciated job and it ran so smoothly in the background we barely thought about it. This is such a good indication of perfect logistics. Our tour guide, Carlos “The Mountain King”, really made this trip special. We had a group of 9, all with varying abilities, potential setbacks (injuries, illness, etc) and mindsets on outdoor adventure and trekking. Typically this would be hard to manage, but the Mountain King managed every person individually with huge amounts of care, fun and encouragement. Carlos really bonded us as a group and we became a family. If anyone was struggling he would drop to the back to help out, if we needed a big motivational push he would us through it! During the later stages of the trip, some old injuries and new blisters prevented some of our family from completing some of the more challenging sections but Carlos ensured safe passage with alternative options such as horseback or vehicle transportation to the next meeting point. To add to this, he trusted the stronger trekkers to head on at their own pace, always gave clear time frames and locations of meeting points. His 18 years of expertise shone throughout, his passion for his roots and ancestors became admirable and his joy and infectious laugh ensured high spirits, playful encounters and lifelong memories. A man with an unbelievable wealth of knowledge, a deeply passionate and spiritual attachment to the land, accompanied with bundles of positive energy and genuine care really topped off the experience. The Mountain King deserves his nickname and if you are lucky enough to share 5 days trekking through the mountains to Machu Picchu with him, you won’t want the journey to end.
Cannot recommend Salkantay Trekking enough! We felt informed and prepared every step of the way. Each person we interacted with was lovely! Rodrigo our horseman made sure all our gear got to our first camp safely, Donato and Limar made AMAZING food, and of course our guide JC was superb. He was extremely organized and professional. He was also a walking fact book. He knew everything from history, culture, cuisine, plants and animals, I don’t think there was a single question he didn’t know the answer to! Truly an unreal journey!
We did this tour with Carlos The Mountain King as a guide and had a great experience! The communication with Salkantay Trekking was very clear, the accomodation was great and the guide, the cooks David and William and the horseman Luis took very good care of us. It was a very memorable experience with a very nice group. Would recommend!
Excellent life time experience. Salkantay trekking made it seamless. Our guide Guido is a superstar. He is passionate, lots of local knowledge and patient with all the guests. He had great command over English that was also very helpful. Chefs (Dimatrio and Yohann) who made meals for us were very very good and thoughtful. Accommodations were excellent. Special mention to Sky lodge - it was perfect after challenging second day climbing and descending from Salkantay pass. Food and accommodation were actually better than what we expected. Kudos to entire Salkantay trekking team.
This hike was probably my favorite of all time—truly unforgettable! The service is exceptional from start to finish. We enjoyed amazing fresh food every day, and the horseman made sure our bags were always well taken care of. Our guides, Alan and Frank, were outstanding—professional, friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about what they do. The hike itself is incredible, and reaching Machu Picchu is an absolutely breathtaking experience. Every detail was well organized, and the entire journey exceeded my expectations. I 100% recommend this trek! Considering everything that’s included, the price is very reasonable compared to other hikes. It was one of the best investments I’ve ever made, and it’s an experience I’ll never forget. ❤️
This five day trek through the Andies with old and new friends was one of the greatest experiences of my life! We were awestruck, challenged, broken down, and encouraged back up! Every step of the way had views beyond imagination. We laughed until our stomachs hurt, shed a few tears, ate amazing homemade meals, stretched, stargazed, stumbled all along the Incan Trail. Our guide, Alex The Mountain Lion, was our incredible, expert fearless leader! He took great care of each of us as the altitude and strain took their tolls, all the while making us laugh and teaching us so much about the culture and history of his beloved country. I would recommend this experience to anyone who is up to be challenged, push themselves out of their comfort zone, and has a fair amount of backpacking experience. :)
This trip was worth the price and I had a wonderful time with our guide Alex! The views were all so beautiful and I loved how much info we got from him as well. He was so helpful and got a ton of amazing photos for us all! He made sure we were all well taken care of.
This was such a great experience! The price was well worth it for everything they provided for you and organized. I loved our guide Marco he made the experience better than I could have imagined. He had such a passion for the trek and Machu Picchu. I liked the length of the trek and how they broke it up. Each day was fabulous in its own ways. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to hike the Salkantay Trail!
