At the same time, as an experienced local tour operator who has been operating and observing the natural environment of Phu Quoc for many years, we would also like to provide some additional context regarding the seagrass and Rach Vem area, particularly the dark-colored water you observed. ### Regarding the dark water in the Rach Vem seagrass area The Rach Vem area is a **natural estuarine environment**, where freshwater from streams and rainfall meets the sea. The darker appearance of the water can occur naturally, particularly during the rainy season, and there are several contributing factors: 1. **An estuarine environment** Rach Vem is located near the outlet of streams and waterways. Freshwater, sediment and organic matter are naturally transported from inland areas toward the sea. 2. **Heavy rainfall during the rainy season** During periods of increased rainfall, rainwater carries naturally occurring soil, sediment and organic material from the surrounding land into the coastal area. This can temporarily make the water appear darker or more turbid. 3. **The natural characteristics of seagrass meadows** Seagrass meadows are highly productive ecosystems that naturally accumulate organic matter and sediment. When older seagrass leaves or roots die and decompose, organic material can accumulate in shallow areas. Waves, tides and currents can then disturb this sediment and carry darker organic-rich particles toward the shoreline. This is one reason why the water in this area can occasionally appear brown or almost black, especially after rain, during certain tidal conditions, or when the wind and waves stir up the seabed. 4. **Historical human settlement and accumulated sediment** Rach Vem was historically a residential and fishing area. Although much of the former settlement has been relocated and only floating structures remain in some areas, some naturally accumulated sediment remains in the surrounding coastal environment. The important point is that **dark-colored water does not necessarily mean polluted or contaminated water**. In this particular area, the phenomenon has been observed repeatedly over many years as part of the natural seasonal and tidal dynamics. One simple way to observe the difference is to look at the white sandy beach. If the dark material were simply dirty wastewater or an oily substance, waves would generally leave persistent dark stains or an oil-like film on the sand. In this case, when the dark water reaches the shore and then recedes with the tide, the underlying sand can remain naturally white. More generally, seagrass areas can experience temporary dark or brown water due to the natural decomposition of plant material, the accumulation and disturbance of organic-rich sediment, and seasonal changes in water movement and rainfall. These processes are part of the natural dynamics of coastal ecosystems. Of course, natural conditions can vary from day to day, and we fully understand that the appearance of dark water may not be visually appealing or what a guest expects from a snorkeling experience.
