La Plaza Durbar de Katmandú es una de las tres plazas Durbar (palacio real) del valle que son Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. Aunque la construcción de la plaza comenzó en el siglo III, las estructuras principales que contiene se agregaron en períodos posteriores. El complejo exterior consta de varios templos del siglo XVI construidos durante el reinado de los reyes Malla. Estos edificios están adornados con fachadas meticulosamente talladas características de la arquitectura Newari. La plaza central está rodeada de complejos palaciegos construidos durante los períodos Malla y Shah. El más conocido entre ellos es el Nautale Durbar, un palacio de nueve pisos construido por Prithvi Narayan Shah para conmemorar la Unificación de Nepal. Un templo de tres pisos llamado Kumari Chowk o Kumari Bahal está ubicado en el extremo sur de la plaza Durbar. Este templo de la era Malla se utiliza como residencia de Kumari, una joven adorada como una encarnación viviente de la diosa hindú Durga.
La segunda parada de este recorrido será ahora en Swayambhunath, el Templo de los Monos. Swayambhunath cuenta con una gran estupa conocida como Mahachaitya. El nombre tibetano del sitio significa Árboles Sublimes, por las muchas variedades de árboles que se encuentran en la colina. Sin embargo, Shingun puede ser del nombre Nepal Bhasa para el complejo, Swayambhu, que significa autogenerado. Para los budistas Newars, en cuya historia mitológica y origen, tanto el mito como la práctica religiosa cotidiana, Swayambhu ocupa una posición central, es probablemente el más sagrado entre los lugares de peregrinación budista. We enjoyed a great tour with Nilakantha Acharya. He patiently explained the religious and cultural importance of the temples, palaces, and local areas. We learned a lot about Nepal and Kathmandu in a few hours with Nilakantha, not to mention a tasty lunch at the Durbar Square. For our special request to buy tea, Nilakantha took extra time and effort, bringing us to a tea store I specified. We could not ask for a better way to spend an afternoon in Kathmandu!!

What a lovely tour, and incredible intro to Nepal and Kathmandu! I did option 1 with Nilakantha, and could not recommend it more. It ended up being a private tour (unexpectedly), which was amazing. The first stop was more of a city square with a ton of different buildings, which was great for the history, and the second stop was a temple (both Hindu and Buddhist) which was great for religion and mythology. I had looked at the tours with more stops, but I’m so glad I booked this one instead! We could really take our time at each stop, and Nilakantha adjusted according to what I was most interested in and what questions I was asking. He even took me to an incredible rooftop for coffee when jet lag hit between stops! He was also so patient with the million photos I took, but I know that if I’d been in a hurry then he would have adjusted for that too (he asked upfront about my time commitments for the day). Honestly can’t recommend this enough!

We did a private tour which was a good half day and fulfilled our wishes. Our guide was helpful, kind, and knowlegeable but sometimes we had to repeat ourselves as he did not fully understand our questions.

The local guide was very friendly and always eager to fulfill special requests. The driver was also excellent. The whole tour was really tailor-made, which gave me a deep insight into the culture and life in Kathmandu.
