El monumento fue construido por el emperador Adriano (117-138 dC) junto con el puente Aelius frente a él para convertirse en un mausoleo para él y sus sucesores. En el transcurso de los siglos se convirtió en la muralla defensiva de la Ciudad del Vaticano, el sitio de una guarnición, una prisión, pero también las oficinas del Tesoro y Archivo del Vaticano. Hoy se puede visitar el interior del castillo con sus ricas salas con frescos del siglo XVII (Sala de Apolo, Sala de Paolina decorada con las Historias de Alejandro Magno, Sala de Perseo con episodio del mito del héroe griego, Sala de Amore y Psiche), las cárceles, la colección de armas antiguas, la galería de pintura (con obras de Carlo Crivelli, Luca Signorelli y Dosso Dossi), la colección de mármoles, cerámicas y esculturas antiguas. La terraza ofrece una de las mejores vistas panorámicas del centro histórico.

We spent a beautiful afternoon discovering particular corners and knowing secrets and compelling stories and a thank you goes to Vincenzo that mel tell her really amazed us.
We took a tour of Castel Sant’Angelo and Palazzo Farnese with Vincenzo, a guide who is now one of the strong points of every escape to Rome. This time the visit to Castel Sant’Angelo, which apparently is not one of the most attractive monuments in the capital, proved to be the scene of a lesson in history, architecture, life and death, paganism and Christianity. The Farnese palace then was the gem that made the weekend unforgettable. If you visit anything in Rome, the enthusiasm of Vincenzo Spina gives you half the joy.
This was a fabulous tour. Vincent was able to bring the history alive with his great storytelling skills. The Castle was beautiful on its own, but the tour was so worthwhile.
