Una popular excursión de un día desde Seúl, la extensa Suwon es la ciudad más grande de la provincia de Gyeonggi-do, con fortificaciones declaradas Patrimonio de la Humanidad todavía rodeando su corazón. Suwon casi se convirtió en la capital del país en el siglo XVIII, cuando el rey Jeongjo, gobernante de la dinastía Joseon, construyó los muros de 5,7 kilómetros de largo entre 1794 y 1796, antes de trasladar la corte real al sur. Sin embargo, el rey murió, el poder permaneció en Seúl y Suwon terminó siendo un lugar turístico increíble. La ciudad está situada a unos 30 kilómetros al sur de Seúl.

La muralla de la fortaleza declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad que encierra la ciudad original de Suwon es lo que atrae a la mayoría de los viajeros. La muralla de la fortaleza, que serpentea hacia arriba y hacia abajo en Paldal-san (143 m), se extiende a lo largo de 5.7 kilómetros a través de cuatro majestuosas puertas, puestos de mando, pabellones, torres de observación y plataformas de faros de fuego. Construido por el rey Jeongjo y terminado en 1796, fue construido con tierra y revestido con grandes bloques de piedra y ladrillos grises, casi todos restaurados.
Esta experiencia temática de 245 acres está diseñada para transportarte de regreso a la dinastía Joseon mientras paseas por pintorescos terrenos llenos de edificios de paja y azulejos que se mudan aquí desde toda Corea. Los artistas que llevan hanbok (ropa tradicional) fabrican ollas y papel para hacer a mano, mientras que otros tienden a las parcelas de hortalizas y el ganado. A lo largo del día hay espectáculos de músicos tradicionales, bailarines, acróbatas y equilibristas, y puedes ver una ceremonia de boda organizada.

Nate was a great tour guide and host! He provided water and small snacks in his very comfortable and clean car. He grew up in the US, and moved to Korea for college, so had a unique perspective on the country. During the fortress part of the tour, he gave us the history, as well as some facts that really filled out the experience. We saw two of the gates, and walked along the ramparts. We then tried our hands at Korean traditional archery, which was fun! To finish the fortress portion of the tour, we went on a unique bus with semi-opaque LED screens for windows. We drove along the periphery of the fortress walls, and could see images of the building and plans, as well as further history on the screens. When there was something of interest to see, the screens would clear. From there we drove to the Korean Folk Village and started with lunch. Yummy! Then we saw the traditional dances in a parade, and had plenty of time to walk through the whole village, with Nate explaining what we were seeing. He took plenty of pictures for us, and made sure to tell us where to go to get the best views. We finished the tour with a dance performance in the theater, and a drive back to the hotel. It was a really special day!
