I was only in Yangshuo for a couple of days but it was easily the most memorable experience of my trip around China - this tour is the reason why! I decided to do the food tour with Hans as being able to eat and experience as the locals do is very important to me. I was taken to a cozy local food establishment for an appetiser, then to the nearby food market to pick up fresh ingredients for our lesson. The entire time, Hans made me feel welcome & comfortable, he revealed fascinating insights into Chinese culture, things you can only learn from a true local! The food we made together was incredible, the beer fish & tofu were my personal favourites. Hans walked me through the cooking process as only a natural chef can, giving me all the tools to cook these recipes myself when I returned home. What truly made this special to me was how good of a host & guide that Hans is - a very funny and charismatic man, plus his English is perfect! If you visit Yangshuo, there of course are many beautiful sights to see, but you must put this tour at the top of your list!

I’ve traveled a fair bit and taken many food tours, but this one was something else. Hans is an absolute gentleman—warm, friendly, very funny, and his English is perfect. He won’t take you anywhere on the usual tourist trail. Yes, you’ll try the beer fish, but more importantly, you’ll experience what the locals really eat. We visited a humble stall with the freshest, most delicious local vegetables, toured the only local market where Hans explained every local product and answered all our questions (with samples of locally brewed rice wine!), and tried snail broth noodles—a Yangshuo specialty. The touristy versions don’t compare; this was my favorite meal of the entire trip. We also ventured out into the sticks for incredible fried noodles and a local dessert, then finished at another local favorite for chicken and fried rice. What made this tour special—aside from learning what’s a tourist trap versus what locals truly eat—was Hans himself. Well-traveled, articulate, and genuinely thoughtful, he creates a judgment-free space where he’s as interested in your story as he is in sharing his own. I made the most of every second in China, but this was my highlight by a mile!
