Alex gave a very in depth tour with great knowledge of the Mayan traditions and rituals. Be sure to swim after or before the tour!
We were in Belize earlier this month and initially debated whether or not to take this adventure. I'm so glad we did! It was truly one of the coolest things I have ever done. Our guide was awesome and super knowledgeable. We went early in the day, so we had the cave (mostly) to ourselves for the tour, which made the experience even better! The beautiful natural formations and the history within this cave are breathtaking!
This amazing tour is good for all ages! The cave was beautiful and interesting. My kids (ages 8 and 9) had a great time as did my husband and I. Burn did a wonderful job explaining everything and taking good care of us!
The cave is beautiful inside. It’s a unique experience to canoe through a cave! The road to get there is rough, but it was worth it.
The scenery around the creek was beautiful and the cave was dark, interesting and even had human remains from ancient Mayan sacrifices. There were lots of bats but they kept their distance. Rudy gave an amazing tour. He had an advanced knowledge of Mayan history, culture, and traditions. He even told the story of the Popol Vuh, the Mayan creation story of the two twins. He was great. Try to get Rudy as your guide, if possible.
Hi Lee, Thank you for sharing your experience at Barton Creek. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your tour with Rudy.
My brothers and I had an awesome experience! Our guide Dora went above and beyond. We had an amazing time floating down the river in the canoes and Dora was fantastic with showing us interesting formations important to the Maya and also giving us the history behind the cave and how it was used by the Mayans for their practices and rituals. The cave and lagoon itself was breathtakingly beautiful; the water a beautiful turquoise and the cave so awe-inspiring. I loved when we turned off our lights and went quiet for a couple minutes…I have never experienced such darkness before. It was super rad. And it was so quiet except for the drips of water and the occasional squeak of the bats. Truly a one of a kind experience. I would totally go again!
The trip and our guide were fantastic! This cave was larger and more adventurous than expected. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the area and Belize in general. This is a must do trip if you have half a day. You can paddle your own canoe so some experience is recommended. As a bonus you can swim in the river exiting the cave, the water is clean and refreshing.
Barton Creek was a great experience! Highly recommended! We had a guide drive us (totally needed) over very bumpy roads and through the creek. The land around the cave entrance is manicured, and there are signs indicating certain plants and trees. There is a very comfortable bathroom close by. The entrance to the cave is picturesque! The water was perfectly still. It was 73 degrees in the cave... not cold. The guide paddled us through the cave and expertly explained what we were seeing. There was a human skull and ancient pottery. We also saw blind catfish, not to mention the beautiful stalagmites! Some parts of the cave had a ceiling that appeared to be 40 feet tall. In other parts we had to duck. If you can walk short distances and get in and out of a canoe, you can do this excursion. So glad we did it!
We arrived late in the day after a somewhat adventurous drive to Barton Creek that included two river crossings-shallow water but still a little unnerving. We didn’t realize that the only cave guides on site were available from Mikes Adventure tours. They kindly gave us a guide - Alex has been doing these tours at Mikes for 11 years. We paid 75USD pp and had a wonderful hourlong tour of the Cave. it is spectacular and the history is tied to Mayan cultures. Some of the rituals and sacrifices are a bit grisly but it’s an amazing piece of history. And the cave itself is a natural wonder.
Outstanding tour. Knowledgeable guide. Exciting, fun, historical. We would do this tour again, hands-down. Great time.
