Highly recommended! I was the only participant and got a private lesson in the preparation of Miso soup and Onigiri while learning a lot about japanese culture.

I found the cooking workshop very disappointing. The chef spoke poor English and because of this the explanation was short and meagre. For the cooking workshop you take a short look at the temple but the explanation here was very short and actually I didn't really see the point. This could have been much more special with a better explanation and introduction. Then on to the workshop given in a kitchen next to the temple. In the description it is mentioned that you are going to make a miso soup but the chef does everything and explains the process. You learn a bit about the ingredients but don't make a miso yourself. Then you start making the onigiri. The explanation of the process was again short and could certainly be better. After an instruction you were allowed to make an onigiri yourself. After making the first one (this was fun, but not special) they asked if anyone wanted to make another one. The description indicates that you will make several but after one was asked if we wanted to make more. Someone in the group indicated that they would like to make another one. Probably because of the chef's poor English, this was not understood and she closed the workshop. You pay €22 for this. A short explanation of miso and onigiri and you eat the miso and onigiri and then you can leave again.

I had a great time making onigiri and miso soup with the talented Kazuki who was very informative about food culture in Japan and the importance of Buddhism within the process of preparing and eating food. An absolute must do while in Takayama.

Tama, our host, was excellent in explaining the detail of making a perfect miso soup. The onigiri was excellent too. Would highly recommend the experience. The temple setting was the cherry on top!

I loved the experience, the teacher a good person and passed well the lesson and teachings regarding customs and traditions, but it did not seem that I would like to be there giving class, although we tried to break the ice we felt him a little angry. But the experience was great and my children of 12 and 9 years loved

Very fun experience. Our guide/chef spoke perfect English and shared his thoughts on appreciating the food and where it comes from, which we all appreciated. The miso soup was excellent, ingredients explained to us but made entirely by our chef. We prepared our own rice balls and they were also good.

It was a lot of fun.... the teacher was young, friendly and easy to be with. We had planned for this cooking experience to be lunch and it was perfect for us. Our instructor shared with us how the prep work was done, engaged us and shared knowledge about the ingredients. It wasn't heavy lifting but a wonderful hour after touring all morning.
So glad you could join our cooking session at the temple! We had a great time too and hope you left with full hearts (and full stomachs!). Wishing you the best for the rest of your journey—and we’d love to welcome you back next time you’re in Takayama.
Very amusing experience and delicious food. Our two and a half year old loved it! The teacher is very fluent speaker. Beautiful kitchen.
