Kathakali se formó a finales del siglo XVI y es una forma de drama de danza ritual. Esta forma de arte clásico surgió de las antiguas formas de arte llamadas Krishnattom y Ramanattom. Kathakali significa "contar historias por pantomima". Los actores no hablan: las actuaciones se basan completamente en las expresiones faciales, los movimientos y los gestos de los actores. Aplicar el maquillaje Kathakali es una lenta transformación de los actores de seres mortales a divinidades y demonios inmortales. Esta metamorfosis se lleva a cabo frente a la audiencia y toma alrededor de 2 a 3 horas hasta que los actores estén completamente disfrazados y pintados (se requieren un mínimo de 2 personas. No es válido entre el 15 de diciembre y el 10 de enero)

It was an interesting experience. As others have said, don't go too early. The actual performance is only 20min. It is good but not for everyone.

The Kathakali show was a wonderful cultural experience and a great introduction to Kerala’s classical performing arts. Watching a Kathakali show was an unforgettable experience and a wonderful introduction to Kerala’s rich cultural heritage. The performers were incredibly skilled, with powerful facial expressions, precise hand gestures (mudras), and stunningly elaborate costumes and makeup. Even without understanding the language, the storytelling was clear and emotionally engaging, thanks to the expressive acting and live traditional music. The explanations given before or during the performance really helped in understanding the meaning behind the gestures and characters, making the experience even more enjoyable. Thoroughly enjoyed the show. The actors and musician were superb, I can’t recommend it highly enough. It was also wonderful seeing the transformation as they put their makeup on.

Be sure to look, preferably be there 1 hour beforehand to watch the make-up. Super great experience and absolutely impressive. Room is air conditioned, preferably take a light scarf or cardigan. Water (sealed bottle) is quite cheap to buy.
