Los escalones tienen un corazón rojo latiendo pintado en ellos, mientras que el centro de información turística cercano es un llamativo rosa pastel. ¡Hola Colón! Estamos en la Plaza Colón, también conocida como Plaza Colón, contemplando una imponente estatua de Cristóbal Colón. Entonces, ¿qué hace Colón aquí? Simple: ¡fue el primer explorador español en reclamar la isla para el trono español! Llamó a la isla San Juan Buatista, y aunque luego su nombre cambió a Puerto Rico, el nombre “San Juan” quedó para esta ciudad.
No te puedes perder la enorme fortaleza que tienes delante. Ese es el Castillo San Cristóbal, la fortificación construida por españoles más grande de América. Cruza usando los cruces peatonales y dirígete hacia el centro de visitantes de la entrada principal del Castillo si planeas visitarlo. De lo contrario, gire a la izquierda y suba la pendiente hacia la entrada histórica para continuar el recorrido. ¡Sigue escuchando mientras caminas!
Continúe caminando y mire a la izquierda. ¿Ves ese grupo de árboles con dos torres altas que sobresalen arriba? Detrás de ellos se esconde un edificio de piedra color canela con techo triangular: el Polvorín de Santa Elena, construido en 1783. Este edificio sirvió durante mucho tiempo como polvorín. ¡La pólvora para librar todas esas batallas contra holandeses e ingleses tenía que venir de alguna parte! ¡Hoy en día, Polverín de Santa Elena sirve como oficina del Servicio de Parques Nacionales!
Directamente delante de nosotros está el Castillo San Felipe del Morro, más conocido como El Morro. Probablemente sea la fortificación más épica de Puerto Rico y gran parte de América. La construcción de este castillo comenzó en 1539, ¡y es bueno que así fuera! ¿Recuerdas todos esos ataques a San Juan? Sin duda lo habrían logrado si no fuera por este fuerte.
Sigue caminando mientras escuchas. Más adelante y a la izquierda, ¿ves esa estructura gris y blanca con la parte superior negra, sobresaliendo por encima del muro de piedra? Casi parece un faro, ¡pero es la Batería Santa Elena, también conocida como Battery Guardhouse!
Continúe caminando mientras escucha. Mire a la izquierda, hacia el enorme edificio amarillo con tres banderas ondeando en lo alto. Se trata del Cuartel de Ballaja, un antiguo cuartel militar y último proyecto de construcción a gran escala realizado por los españoles en la ciudad. El segundo piso alberga ahora el Museo de las Américas.
Haga una pausa aquí. Observe el cartel a la derecha de Casa Blanca. Antes de ser una casa, en realidad fue la primera fortificación de San Juan. Construido en 1521, protegió a los colonos contra las revueltas de los indígenas taínos. Para visitarlo, cruce la puerta a su derecha. Mire la alta catedral blanca más adelante a la izquierda. ¡Esta es la Catedral Basílica Menor de San Juan Bautista, la iglesia más antigua de América! Mientras caminas, mira las murallas de la ciudad. Pronto podrás ver algunos edificios detrás del muro. Estos conforman La Fortaleza, la fortaleza original de España aquí en San Juan, que se remonta a antes de la década de 1530. Antes del Castillo San Cristóbal, eso era lo único que se interponía entre San Juan y otras naciones conquistadoras.

This was a useful tour. I wanted to be a little bit more independent than having to go with a group. The information provided on the audio was very interesting. There is a little bit of a glitch when you walk over the same path the audio kept wanting to restart. I would recommend this guide if you want to do an independent walk, but we did get turned around in a couple of places due to our own errors. Overall, I found it to be very worthwhile for what we wanted for that afternoon. The traffic was really bad in old San Juan so we ended up driving back into town a little bit and taking an Uber back into old San Juan to start the tour

I specifically purchased this tour because I had an electric scooter and could not do other walking tours. San Juan was not accessible by scooter. Many of the sidewalks were not sloped or needed to be worked on. Others with this desire to see the old town but use a wheelchair or scooter need to be aware. We only made it to the 10th stop before we turned around because of the unknown ability to make it up and down sidewalks.

Because of that, there are sections where a scooter may not be able to go easily (or at all), depending on sidewalk conditions, curb ramps, and the area's historic layout. Comprehensive tour of the old San Juan area. Starting point was less than 10 minutes from the cruise port. With short stops along the way, the tour took about 2 hours. We did not spend extra time touring the fort or the castle.

Very good. I saw a lot of walking tour groups. I liked that I could go at my own pace, stop and go see a side attraction or grab a bite to eat, and then start up again.

This was the perfect tour for me because I could move at my own pace. It is heavily focused on military operations and the battle for Puerto Rico.
