Siloso Point está separado del Parque Labrador en Singapur continental por menos de medio kilómetro de mar. Esta proximidad ha alimentado una leyenda urbana sobre un túnel submarino que conecta fuertes de construcción británica y baterías de artillería en ambos lugares. A pesar de las numerosas excavaciones y restauraciones, no se ha encontrado ningún túnel y ninguno aparece en mapas o documentos. Los nombres de los lugares y características naturales en Blakang Mati reflejan las comunidades locales, la historia económica y social, así como la flora y fauna de la isla. Siloso Beach, una de las tres playas con lagunas de natación creadas por Sentosa Development Corporation, SDC durante las décadas de 1970 y 1980 tiene una rica historia. Su nombre proviene de la palabra malaya “roca”, inicialmente un punto de defensa estratégica. Se transformó en un vibrante punto turístico en la década de 1970. Hoy en día, Siloso Beach es famosa por su voleibol de playa, deportes acuáticos y animada vida nocturna, donde la energía nunca se desvanece y las fiestas siguen adelante.
Palawan Beach, lleva el nombre de la palabra malaya “Pahlawan”, que significa guerrero o héroe. Durante el período colonial, los soldados británicos frecuentaban Palawan Beach para proteger a los nadadores de los frecuentes avistamientos de tiburones y cocodrilos de agua salada. Los británicos erigieron vallas de tiburones conocidas como “swimming pays” en malayo. Afortunadamente, estos depredadores ya no se encuentran alrededor de Sentosa, por lo que es un lugar seguro y agradable para los amantes de la playa hoy en día.
En 2003, Sentosa Cove se lanzó como un enclave cerrado de 117 hectáreas con 2600 casas, incluidas villas frente al mar, mansiones y condominios. De las 117 hectáreas, 100 son tierras recuperadas. El área incluye cinco islas artificiales Coral Island, Paradise Island, Treasure Island, Sandy Island y Pearl Island, reservadas en su mayoría para bungalows. Food was lovely although you might want to encourage the chef not to hover over passengers while they are selecting their food. Wine quality was terrible. Flowers were beautiful. BUT seriously people stop with all the marketing emails. I signed up with Trip Advisor not with you. But you are abusing the access to send me way too many emails. Over 30 odd. And when I ask you to stop you then sent me two on the same day. So I asked again. And now you send me 3 of the same. Which is why I have rated this experience so poorly.

I went on this lovely cruise as a birthday surprise invitation by my wife. The ship is beautiful, well maintained, and the staff were generally kind and courteous. The food was also tasty, albeit some portions were somewhat small. (Par for the course in Singapore). While the service was good, I found that the service staff is not empowered to do what is necessary to delight the customer. For example, I was set to order a Long Island ice tea but I didn’t like Cuervo tequila and asked nicely if they would use Don Julio instead. The waiter looked at me as if I was from Mars, but he proceeded to tell me that he would have to check with his manager! He came back in a few minutes and promptly told me “So sorry, cannot”. At $25 dollars per drink, I would have expected a bit more flexibility and accommodation. If your business is in the hospitality industry, then this shouldn’t be such a difficult guest request. Similarly situation occurred as I asked for a 2nd roll of bread. There seems to be a scarcity mindset on board, which is incongruent with general principles of hospitality. I would have been more inclined to order more drinks if I the manager had been a bit more thoughtful and accommodating.

The overall experience is just great. It’s a nice cruise, and all the catering staff is very attentive if you need anything. Buffet food can be a hit and miss, but no complaints here as the food was good quality as were the free flow drinks. Special thanks to Captain Mike Willie and his crew who are not only sailing the ship, but also interacting with the guests. And thanks to him for answering my nautical question as well. It is good to know that this cruise does not take place under sail, but with engine power. For sure there are operational reasons for that. If you’re looking a pure sailing cruise, do enquire before if it will be under sail or under engine power.
