La sede oficial del Papa. La famosa iglesia está coronada con impresionantes estatuas a lo largo de la cara exterior y llena de belleza por dentro. Las paredes principales están cubiertas de hermosos frescos de la época del Renacimiento y la nave principal, restaurada hace cuatro siglos, te dejará asombrado. Es una de las iglesias más antiguas de Roma, pero la Basílica de San Giovanni in Laterano es algo más: una verdadera joya artística.
La Basílica de San Pablo Extramuros da testimonio de la historia de la Santa Iglesia en Roma. El altar mayor, coronado por un impresionante dosel gótico, atesora los restos mortales de San Pablo, que fue enterrado aquí. La basílica gigante fue construida ya en el siglo V d.C. y presenta columnas romanas originales, un gran mosaico de la Edad Media, pero también los retratos de todos los Papas de la historia, incluidos los últimos: el Papa Francisco y el Papa Benedicto XVI.
Una de las 4 basílicas mayores de Roma y la más grande dedicada a Santa María fue construida entre 422-432 bajo la instrucción del Papa Celestino la primera. Los fascinantes mosaicos que cubren el arco triunfal y la nave dieron un modelo para futuras representaciones de la Virgen María.

Amazing day Learning the history of the city and the churches. Added bonus that we were able to complete our Holy Door Pilgrimage (saw St Peter’s another day). Alex was amazing, giving us the perfect blend of history combined with theological significance.
